Title: Favorite Dollar DVDs
Post by: Menard on December 22, 2004, 03:10:19 AM
One of my guilty pleasures has become the ultra cheap dollar DVD. Although many of them are the same titles over and over again, I have found an occasional interesting one. Some of my favorites are:This past Halloween I found some double-feature dollar DVDs at Target including: The Giant Gila Monster/Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter and the silent classics Nosferatu/Phantom of the OperaAt Dollar Discount I have found a film noir double-feature Whistle Stop/Detour and for war movie buffs A Walk in the Sun/Go for Broke double-feature.I have found singles of 'The Undertaker and His Pals', 'Fangs of the Living Dead', and 'Swamp Women' among others at Dollar Tree and Dollar Discount.'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' is fairly common among dollar DVDs, but I found a really good clean version at Wal-mart in a slim snapcase for a dollar. Are there any interesting finds in dollar DVDs that you have made? And where?Bob

This is not bad movie terrotory, but I found a dollar DVD at Target of 1920's Felix the Cat cartoons.   They are really neat and surprisingly  sophisticated for their age.  Much different from the 1950's-1960's ones I had seen before.

Title: Webpage about dollar DVDs
Post by: Menard on December 22, 2004, 08:51:21 PM
Just found a webpage dedicated to dollar DVDs and the stores where they can be found. There is a website of info on this one page and it was a slow download so be patient.                                                                                                                                                                                        http://www.livejournal.com/community/cheap_dvds/

I found "Bela Legosi meets a Brooklyn Gorilla" at Walmart for a $1.00 on the Digiview label and in a plastic slim case. I love this movie... very funny and goofy. Here's a good review of it http://www.filmthreat.com/Features.asp?Id=1237
IThe transfer is really clean and good. I have also picked up alot of Superman and Betty Boop cartoon DVDs on the same label at Walmart for a buck!...chris

I just picked up a couple of $1 dollar titles at the local 99 cent store. The first one was called "Trash" and it was well directed and probably wouldn't pass for a B-film because I felt it was very gripping. The second title is more cheesy... "Zipperface!" Haven't watched it yet. I'm waiting to invite a couple of friends over for another evening of torture.

The Satanic Rites of Dracula is a good film Menard.

Let us know how you liked Zipperface Sugar_Nads. I found it a good $1 worth of entertainment.

By using the term 'clean version' when describing 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' dollar DVD available at Wal-mart, I was meaning good picture quality, not an edited version. I apologize if I caused any confusion.--Bob

Thank God! If it wasn't for the nudity that movie would be a waste, even with Cushing and Lee.

I got my brother-in-law two of those $1 DVDs from Wal-Mart. One was THE OUR GAND FOLLIES OF 1938 and WHO KILLED DOC ROBIN? (another Hal Roach production, only in color).

To be perfectly honest, Scott. I was clawing my eyes out half way through Zipperface. I hate the movie... It's not even worth wiping my *arse* with.

I'm even thinking about going back to the dollar store, slapping the owner and demanding my dollar back. ; )

If there was a "negative" star rating out of five stars, I'd give it a negative 2.

Of the ones I've bought so far I'd say the Spaghetti Western "Dead Man's River" was good. Not a great story, but the dialogue between Lee Van Cleef and Gina Lollabrigida is very funny, after a while I just wanted scenes of them arguing and flirting as they tried to out con each other.

I liked the the Jimmy Wang Yu film "Blood of the Dragon" but the print used was very worn and faded. Good fights for sure, and the last one runs 20 minutes.

The 3-episode disc of the TV series of "The Third Man" starring Michael Rennie (who looks like a horse saddle his skin is so wrinkled and over tanned) was good time wasting fun. 30 minutes for a spy drama, too short really, and rarely more than five speaking parts per episode, but still has its moments. I would like to see more episodes for sure, plus it was funny to Jonathan Smith of "Lost In Space" acting in something else and toning it down, but you can see he really was a limited actor.

A movie I don't own, but I see everywhere on $1 DVDs and recommend is the Frank Sinatra assassination drama "Suddenly". The good guys are so squeaky clean they'd make Ozzie and Harriet seem like bootleggers, but Sinatra gives a great performance as an unstable war veteran turned assassin.
