A few films that have been on my mind that seem to be in the same territory. Kinda. Can anyone add to this list. I think you can get the feel of the type of films I'm thinking of.
Day of the Jackel
The Conversation
Marathon Man
Three Days of the Condor
French Connection
Serpico
Dog Day Afternoon
The Godfather
Straw Dogs
Taxi Driver
All the Presidents Men
Trying to find other films from the 70's of this type.
The Paralax (sp) View, The 7-Ups, Hickey & Boggs, Black Sunday, Dirty Harry and his sequels.
The Eiger Sanction should fit in there somewhere.
Check out THE OFFENCE and THE ANDERSON TAPES, two Sean Connery crime films of the 70's, directed by Sidney Lumet. Also, check out Connery in THE TERRORISTS, as a Swedish(!) counter-terrorism expert.
THE HOT ROCK is a spiffy 70's heist flick with Robert Redford and George Segal.
THE WILBY CONSPIRACY is a good political thriller set in South Africa, with Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine.
Lee Marvin is good in PRIME CUT, a bloody exploitation-crime flick from the early 70's. Some interesting bits with a thresher in this movie!
THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE,TWO,THREE is a good 70's urban terrorism-crime film. Walter Matthau takes on Uber-badguy Robert Shaw!!
Can't forget Robert Mitchum!! In THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE, he's a small time crook in trouble with the mob. In YAKUZA, Mitchum goes to Japan to retrieve a kidnapped girl and runs up against the Japanese Mob! In THE BIG SLEEP, Mitchum reprises his role as detective Philip Marlowe in this remake of the Bogart classic. If you can get over the fact that this film is set in England in the 70's, it's a pretty good film, with Oliver Reed as the villain.

Wow Deej, you're like an encyclopedia.
And let's not forget:
* THE LAUGHING POLICEMAN
* SCORPIO
* PUPPET ON A CHAIN
* HARDCORE (makes a good double feature with TAXI DRIVER - both were written by Paul Schrader)
* THE NEW CENTURIONS
* FAREWELL, MY LOVELY
* CHINATOWN
* THE GETAWAY
* THE KILLER ELITE
* FREEBIE AND THE BEAN (pretty violent for a comedy)
* KLUTE
* DEATH WISH
* MEAN STREETS
* FINGERS
Thanks everyone. Sounds like a lot of good films for a good list.

Good call Burgo...can't believe I forgot those! Especially THE GETAWAY(shotgun....twelve guage....pump)!!! I left out CHINATOWN and FAREWELL, MY LOVELY because, while made in the 70's, they're set in the 30's and 40's. However, they are two of my favorite detective flicks! Now, if someone could explain THE TWO JAKES to me, I'd be a happy man!
