Title: Darkness (spoliers)
Post by: BeyondTheGrave on December 26, 2004, 08:13:33 PM
wow this movie was a turkey. I didnt think it was going to be that bad I mean I seen worse but this movie was pointless. I figured out the "twist" withn first ten mintues of the movie. You dont see any of the monsters you see a glimpse of them and they look like something that came out of buffy. The ending is a typical "lets just end it right here so we dont have to explain anything ". The camera shakes at certain parts that looks like the house is haveing a earthquake.

Spoiler ahead

The dad escapes from the the house when hes young and ruined the whole 7  child ritual and then decides to bring his family to the house 40 years later to live there. Its never explained why he did it. he was the one going to die. Its really that stupid.

spoiler ends

I really wanted my money back but hey It had a preview for sin city.

I'm listening to NIck Guillo on WGN right now and, besides hating the movie he said the audience was so angry when it was over that he thought they were going to attack the screen. Claimed it was the angriest he had seen a theater audience since "Raising Cain". Called it an insult to horror fans.

He said that it wasn't screened for reviewers before release (a bad sign almost always) and it sat on the shelf for two years after completion, so the studio seemed to know they had a stinker and were trying to sneak it out at recoup more money than they could by dumping it to video or cable.

To be fair, the film has some beautiful visuals, but all the actors seem to be under the effect of tranquilizers, and the film really fails at the storytelling level. There is no tension, scares are silly, narration is messy. I've seen worse, really, but I can't believe they didn't realize while they were doing it how lame the whole thing was.

And far from thinking about it, the crew seem to be remading it: The upcoming "Fragile", by the same studio and director, seems like a twin of this one: similar plot, similar approach.

Oh, Rich, and that thing you mention is not a plot hole. The whole thing was arranged by the villains of the piece.

yeah that was my mistake Neville I will edit out. It just that he was in the house when he was small.I couldnt get my head around it. why he went  back. a villian cant be that smart to get a person to go back to the house.

In the films defense, I do have to say that it was butchered when it hit our shores.  The film was originally rated R when it was shown in other countries, and as in Neville's case: Spain.

Dimension didn't know what exactly to do with it, so they cut out some of the more extreme scenes and gave us a watered down version of the product.  I'm really getting sick of this PG-13 bulls**t that the studios are shoveling on us in heaps.

I have yet to see the film, but I'm sure I'll wait until it's finally released on DVD so that I can see the director's TRUE vision.  Screw Dimension, they are not getting my cash.

Butchered? I don't know. Certainly it's happenned before, and that would explain all the time sitting on the shelf, but no matter that, I have to say that the spanish theatrical version was pretty bad as well, so if you get a Zone 2 DVD copy in your hands, don't expect major improvements.
