Title: Better the second time around?
Post by: Menard on January 09, 2005, 03:17:56 AM
The movie AIRPLANE! is on TV tonight. When I first saw this movie years ago, although there were scenes that were funny, there was quite a bit I did not find to be funny. Maybe as I am getting older I am finding more humor in things as I am sitting here laughing at quite a bit of this movie.

Are there movies anyone has enjoyed more the second time around than they did when they first saw it?

Monty Python and the Holy Grail. There's just so much that's hard to understand what they say and there's some subtleties (sp?) that you mis the first and even second time you see it. Normally I'm not too fond of British humor but this movie kills me.

THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE.  I hated it the first time I saw it, but one of my buddies encouraged me to give it another chance.  I did and I liked it.  I have probably seen it about 10 times now.

My 2nd veiwing of Airplane! was the opposite.

I remember finding it hilarious when I was younger....now it doesn't do anything for me.

There are of course gags in AIRPLANE! that just fall flat. Some scenes, like the disco scene, I did not find to be funny when I first had seen it. This time around I laughed many times during that scene; maybe it's the passage of time. Some comedies do have a tendency to not be as funny the second time around because we aleady got the humor. Perhaps this time around I enjoyed the humor since I didn't get a laugh the first time.

AIRPLANE gets better after the first time. I liked it the first time, but I always get a big kick out of watching it every time I happen to chance to catch a few minutes of it on TV. I don't usually watch a film more than once. More due to time restraints than anything else. It's one of the sacred rules of a Movie Marathoner. Some day maybe I will watch a film more than once again, but for now I can't.

STARSHIP TROOPERS is one that stands out as being better the second time around for me.

That's sort of how I found Repo Man. The first time I saw it, I didn't like it at all until toward the end, when I suddenly thought "You know, this is a pretty cool movie." I watched it again the next day, and loved it. Curiously, most of my friends (who all watched it at different times) felt the same way; I only know one person who really got into it the first time around.
