Several years ago I used to travel town to town and state to state as a photographer. Now perhaps it was my curiosity that led me to on occassion find something that reminded me of a horror movie or a serial killer, much to the dismay of the make-up artist who travelled with me. Of course my boss had a simple explanation, " Normal people just don't do this."
Hey, it's not my fault he sent me to Gainesville, Florida. And there is one photographer who will probably never forget or forgive me.
When I was in Illinois, I spent some time in the town of Danville. The street I was staying on, about a mile down the road, turned into Voorhees Street, like Jason Voorhees in FRIDAY THE 13TH (it's not my fault the street was named that).
In a lot of towns in Illinois, the streets are all named rather than having a number (2nd, 3rd, etc.). One night after shopping at a drugstore I was headed back to Voorhees Street as I noticed the house numbers; 1100 block, 1200 block, and I got to 1300 block; this was Voorhees Street. Voorhees was the equivalent of 13th Street.
Considering the odd coincidence, and having shared it with a few people, I also came to find out that in the area, not the same county, there is a Crystal Lake. The same name as in the movie.
After that I wondered if the person who wrote or developed the idea for the movie, may have been from the area, or familiar with the area. Or was it just coincidence?
Does anybody have any interesting coincidences with a movie and a place you have been or live?
my friend lives on Robin Hood Lane which intersects with Sherwood road.
I think Crystal Lake location was in Northern New Jersey. I don't think that is the name of the lake, but the film was shot in North Jersey I believe. Perhaps the writer was from Illinois, but the film was possibly shot in New Jersey.
The name Voorhees was definitely prominent in the town as there were several businesses with that name. There is also an historical serial killer with the name Voorhees who was from the Midwest. It was either at the turn of the century or early twentienth century. The killers were a mother and her sons who would allow travelers to stay in their home. And by the way, when I was in Danville, I did think of going to the cemetary to see if I could find a tombstone with Jason Voorhees on it; I just didn't have the time.

Most if not all of the original Friday the 13th was shot in or around the Blairstown/Hope area in NJ. I lived around there for a few years and got to see the place. It was at a camp around Silver Lake (IIRC) and at the time when I went there, the camp was closed either because of the season or whatever but you couldn't actually get on the grounds legally.
Thanks for the location info odinn7.
They probably don't let you at the campsite, because of what happened there. I mean with the boy coming out of the lake and all. : )
