Title: Day of the Dead remake ideas
Post by: Jack Corbett on January 30, 2005, 07:01:51 PM

Please remember, I have been trying to find Day of the Dead (1985) unsuccessfully for MONTHS now. Also, it is a little like the original script that George wrote.

PLOT:
Same as Day, except there are more soldiers, a small squad of "trained" zombies, and a few more scientists.

CHARACTERS:

Scientists:

Sarah
Lukey
Dr. Logan
Dr. Fisher
Dr. Mary

Soldiers:

Capt. Rhodes
Lt. Steel
Cpl. Sendich
Cpl. Cooper
Cpl. Johnson
Pvt. Miller
Pvt. Rickles
Pvt. Torrez
Pvt. Miguel
Pvt. Glick
Pvt. Brians
Pvt. Marrero

Civillians:

McDermott
John
Spider

Zombies (trained):

Bub
Fatso
Bluto
Chips
Corporal
Bigsuit
Fancyman

WHAT HAPPENS TO CHARACTERS:

This is how the soldiers die, not in order of their deaths. Johnson and Miller die like they did in the original, although it happens in a town whilst collecting zombies.
Also, Glick is the "good guy" soldier, who Rhodes hates, and is good friends with Torrez. Fans of gore will love this, and people with sadistic senses of humor (like me, really) will like Sendich's death. Logan and Fisher are shot by Rhodes.

Okay:

RHODES: Shot by Bub before being ripped in two. (Choke on em'!)
STEEL: Badly injured, shoots himself.
COOPER: Riding in elevator when it stops at the wrong floor. Ripped to pieces as zombies pour in.
RICKLES: Ambushed by zombies in mines. Laughs like mad as zombies tear his face off, bite off his fingers, smash his head, etc.
TORREZ: Zombies sticks its fingers in his eyes and rips his head off.
MIGUEL: Pulled to pieces after letting zombies in.
BRIANS: Smashes a window to escape, but grabbed by zombie and impaled on glass. Subsequently torn in two.
(Alternatively, he slips and his neck lands on the glass. I can't think of which one to use.)
MARRERO: Killed when he crashes the jeep into a wall.
LUKEY: Legs ripped off. Guts torn out through leg stumps.

And this, this is a good one: Sendich. He gets into an elevator and almost gets eaten. The elevator stops at the wrong floor and he almost gets eaten, like Cooper. Although he shakes them off and starts up the elevator, he gets bitten in about twelve places. This is what follows:

SENDICH: Oh. OH, would you f**king look at that. I've been bitten. f**king bitten. Just f**king dandy as it would f**king seem. Just MOTHERf**kING DANDY!!!

Sendich looks down at the zombies beneath him and starts to reload his gun.

SENDICH: Oh, you f**kING rich motherf**kers! YOUR NOT GONNA GET AWAY WITH THIS YOU f**kING SUGAR-COATED BASTARDS!!! I f**kING MEAN IT!!! WHAT THE f**k?! Ya don't f**kING BELIEVE ME?!! I'll f**kING SHOW YA!!! I'll f**kING SHOW YA!!!

He opens up a panel in the floor and lets it loose with his M16.

SENDICH: Ya wanna f**k WIT ME?!! Ya wanna f**k WITH ME?!! I'll show ya who ya f**kING with, MOTHERf**kS!!! I'll f**kIN show YA!!!

Excessive, isn't it? Sendich later zombifies and attacks some of the soldiers.

Tell me what you think.

"Name's Ash. (Cocks shotgun) Housewares.

The famous elevator scene. Romero used it in DAWN OF THE DEAD. Mattei used it in NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES (A.K.A. HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD, ZOMBIE CREEPING FLESH), except that the zombies are in the elevator and pull the guy in.

Sendich acts a little bit like one of the Interpol commandos in NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES.

DAY OF THE DEAD for me was a disappointment. Romero, who was known for socially conscious films, delivers a formulaic script. His characters are stereotyped to an extreme; really, soldiers versus scientists, how many times have we seen that in movies. The overacting is off the scale. The most likeable character in the movie is a zombie (yes, I mean Bub).

With the effort they obviously put into the special effects, they might have had something good if they put that kind of effort into the story. And the cutesy ending (hurrlll).

Menard, you should read the original script. Thats where I got the idea for the other trained zombies from. (Especially Bluto - the way Mary stops it from attacking her is pretty funny) It's at:

Enjoy!

Not that it really matters, but I have two questions:

- How does Miguel get killed in DayotD?
- Does Steel shoot himself?

Oh, and the elevators that they use are a little like the one Ripley uses at the end of Aliens. But a bit bigger. And there is three floors to the mine.

If I have the name correct in my memory. If Miguel was the soldier friendly to Sarah, he was the one who had to have his arm amputated because of being bitten by a zombie. When it becomes a fight between the soldiers and the three civilians, Miguel goes outside the bunker and lets the zombies through the gate. He lets the zombies get him on the lift and then pushes the button to lower the lift into the bunker, setting the zombies loose on the soldiers.

I do not remember what happens to Steel specifically. One of the soldiers does shoot himself.

I rather like the irony of a scene in DEEP RISING where the creature has the bad guy in one of its mouths (so to speak). Joey lets the guy have the pistol so he can end it himself. He takes a shot a Joey but misses. He then puts the gun to his head and pulls the trigger, empty. If he had not tried to kill Joey, he would have been able to end it.

It would have been interesting in DAY OF THE DEAD if the soldier had run out of ammo instead of being able to shoot himself.

Hmmm... nice idea about the "No Ammo" suicide. Who should it happen to in this?

In this one, I want to do it that Torrez and Glick are the ones that you truly feel for and want to survive. Sendich.. well, he's more of an obnoxious person who swears every three seconds.

And the way that the soldier Marrero dies is a reference to the death of the actor who played Rickles, Ralph Marrero.

And I want Pilato to play Rhodes, but with a short beard.

All of them.

As the old saying goes: it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.

Ha ha ha... nice quote.

But seriously, choose just one guy from the list and make him attempt to kill himself but he's out of bullets.

It can't be Sendich, Rhodes, Torrez, Marrero or Steel. I'll just say that.

It takes the fun out of it if you take Rhodes out of the mix. Since I cannot remember who's who, I'll pick Miguel. He should have done that in the movie rather than going down alive, and it is the only time he showed any balls. So let Miguel try to take the easy way out while letting the zombies in and then he discovers that he is out of ammo.

Actually, I wanted to make Rhodes' death more grisly and "juicy":

As he runs away from Bub, he attemps to shoot him as well. Bub just twitches and continues relentlessly Finally Rhodes gets agood shot and knocks Bub off his feet. He goes up to the door, opens it and the zombies pour in. He seems more annoyed than scared; he tries to push them off and is successful but more keep coming. Then two of the zombies - at his feet and head - stick their fingers into the bullet holes Bub made and start to shred him. First the skin splits, then his legs come away, and finaly they chew into his guts. All while he is awake and watching. Then he delivers his line:

"CHOKE ON 'EM!!!"

and Bub salutes him.

By the way, these are running zombies from DotD '04.

In the original idea I had, there was about sixteen soldiers. I thenconsidered it a bit overzealous and cut it down.

You were right about Miguel, he gets bitten and his arm is amputated. I know this because I read it in a Special Effects book. (The first I heard about Day of the Dead...)

One of the original soldiers was a guy called Modine. He is a lot like Rhodes, but a good guy. One you want to survive. Anyway, there was a clown zombie in the original Day of the Dead, so I was going to do it that Modine sees it eating someone, he aims at it's head, and...

'I never f**kin liked clowns, and I sure as hell ain't gonna start now, bastard!'

BOOM!

COPPERS DEATH: (Please Note: I changed the name because one of my cousins is called Cooper)

He and Sendich meet running down a hallway in opposite directions. They run to the elevators (two, side by side) and press them. They decide to go into separate elvators so one has a better chance of surviving. Sendich's one comes down first. As soon as his goes up, Cooper's comes. He gets in.

Sendich, meanwhile, yells something at the zombies below. This attracts all of the zombies on the second floor to his elevator. When it opens, Sendich panic-fires and about twelve zombies get in. He kills four, while being bitten, then manages to close the doors to stop more zombies from getting in. He kills the rest, then delivers his last lines.

Copper's elevator arrives just after Sendich's leaves the "zombie floor". Before the doors open, Copper sees the zombies and they see him as well. He panic-fires, REALLY badly, and when the doors open he is reloading. The zombies swarm in. Absolutely swarm in. Copper falls on his back and they rip him open through the back. He doesn't die, though; before they do too much damage (eg pull out ALL of his intestines) he shoots some of them. But since there is aboutfifteen in the elevator, and he is dying, they overrun him again. one rip off his kneecap, another flips him over and rips all of his insides out. Everything. Teh zombies then have a feast.

At the bottom, Glick, Lukey, and Dr. Mary arrive. they are about to call down Cooper's elevator when they see a huge amount of blood dripping down.

Why doesn't Cooper do the "No bullets in gun" death? And is that gore truthful to Romero's work? Just want to know

Romero's DAY OF THE DEAD was quite gory as you could imagine with the way that Rhodes goes down (it is as disgusting as you think it is).

Do your descriptions fit with the tone of gore in DAY OF THE DEAD? Oh yeah, they do.

I know how gory it is because of the SFX book and the pictures I've found. But a lot of people have complained on the IMDb because Rhodes' legs weren't realistic. I say that they take a cast of Jo Pilato's legs and THEN rip him apart. Oh yeah, some other guy said that one of the legs should twitch. And he doesn't get ripped straight away.

Do you want to know how Torrez and Rickles die? They die in the same spot about fifty seconds apart. In this version they are almost like brothers.

Oh yeah, after Brians is impaled on the glass, they get his torso and rip it to pieces. They also eat his legs and rip them as well.

How does that sound?

Menard, Which was gorier? Sledge in Dawn or Rhodes in Day?

Both look pretty digustin to me...

I've always thought if they could have just combined DAWN's story and characters with DAY's special effects they would probably have the best horror film ever made.

Even though I have the new DAWN on DVD, I have not watched it yet.

Hey! That ain't a bad thought, blkrider. Why don't you make up your own horror movie with that idea?

Watch the RetarDEAD trailer and you could get some ideas for gore scenes.

I really loved the DAWN remake after seeing it in the theater, but it seems to be losing impact with repeated viewing.  Maybe it's just the kind of movie where repeated viewing just creates the urge to nitpick.

I still like the movie for the most part.  I think there's something about seeing too many special features and making-of documentaries to the point where it lessens the impact of a movie.  It seemed a lot scarier in the theater.

When I watch a movie, after the 34'th or 38'th viewing I get bored with it.

But still, what do you think of the character Sendich, blkrider?
