Another Star Wars-type ripoff. And I, dare I say, saw this movie in the theatre. Actually, I was dying to see this way back when. As a child of the late 70's/early 80's, I loved anything remotely tied to Star Wars. In fact, I remember seeing the lobby poster for this "gem of the silver screen" after walking out of The Right Stuff with my dad. I begged him to take me to see it, but instead gave me the money to go see it on my own (with a friend, actually).
Nonetheless, it's junky sci-fi that tries to spoof sci-fi, I think. Chintzy costumes, gaudy sets, obvious effects. Maybe not as bad as Space Raiders. None of the gags are actually funny. Though, I laughed at the jive talking robot and castration jokes. But hey, I was in 3rd grade at the time.
Anyhoo, I can't believe Anjelica Huston starred in this movie. But then again, she was in a couple other bad movies, too.
Aw...don't put it down, I laughed a good bit of the way through ICE PIRATES. That doesn't mean that it's any good, but I still found it to be funny, particularly the time warp sequence.
Did anyone watch Starcrash?
I saw Starcrash. That one was crummy, Though, that chick is pretty fine. Marjoe Gortner is a gas.
Ice Pirates: I haven't seen in years. I liked it more as a kid. I'm sure I laughed more at it then.
Anyhow, I want this movie on dvd. Which apparently isn't on dvd. It's one of those movies that left its um, 'mark' on a my childhood.

When was STARCRASH made as I am not familiar with this one. You got to love any movie with Marjoe Gortner (snicker...snicker).
Do you mean 'mark' as in 'scar'? (:
"Ice Pirates" is due out on DVD on February 15th. Along with others, I know that I was waiting for it. The crazed eunuch-making machine still sticks in my memory, as does the space herpes that they chase around the ship.
"Starcrash" is amazing. Here is the review:

I showed it to the Marines out here and they all gawked over the Emperor (of the First Circle of the Universe) saying, "Imperial battleship, stop the flow of time!" Some of them are still talking about that movie.
You are a master of torture Andrew.
Caroline Munro: hubba-hubba
I loved the rebuilt robot. In fact ALL the robots made the movie for me.

Oh, crap!!
Ice Pirates was/is the film with the "space herpes"!!
This is an unpleasant memory of some wasted afternoon at the Big Screen place that I'll never get back again!
I remember this as a baaaddd film, with no pleasant laughs associated with it.
Eeeewwww!!!
. . . that having been said, I suppose I'd better see it again to make sure it's as awful as I recall . . .

I'm so pathetic. I've seen both "Ice Pirates" and "Starcrash" in theaters. Fortunately, I've managed to erase most of both movies from my mind.
My cousin walked out of "Ice Pirates" at the theater, he hated it so much. Then again he also said he walked out of "Army of Darkness" and had never heard of the "Evil Dead" films at the time. Considering his sense of humor now, I can't figure out what made him walk out of those films.
I like "Ice Pirates" for what it is, a mild sci-fi/pirate movie spoof. It's not the full "Airplane" treatment or "Spaceballs" (which I actually hate BTW), but it gets the job done. It looks and acts like a TV movie (considering the cast especially) with some too rough of TV humor. I still chuckle a time or two if I see it on TV.
Angelica Huston said in some TV interview I remember that this was her attempt to get back into films after her first go around as a film actress imploded. She said she was taking any role she could get to get her name out there again.
I hear tell this was at B-Fest this year. And dude, you totally stole Ash's thunder. He's had a review of this in the works for two years.

Yet another thing I have to get caught up on after getting back. I'll have to pick up the DVD and get Ash's review together. However, do not tell Ash. The epic saga of never having that published is slowly eroding his sanity.

I see your devious plan now, Master Andrew. You are a cunning foe.
Yaddo 42, your brother walked out of ARMY OF DARKNESS?! WTF?
Sorry, It's a little hard to believe. If it was one of the others...
By the way, has he watched it since and has his opinion changed?
Close, it was my cousin, I don't have a brother. I don't know if he's seen it since, but I doubt it. His opinions of films tend to be set in stone. He's probably too busy watching "Chappelle's Show" reruns, laughing his ass off the whole time, and all the while saying, "Why do they allow this stuff on TV?"
Besides since he has a weak stomach for ANYTHING involving blood, gore, death, and horror movie or gross imagery - I doubt he'd ever go anywhere near the "Evil Dead" franchise, no matter how funny they are. The irony is that his wife loves the stuff and anything scary or macabre. IIRC, he wouldn't even watch episodes of "Tales from the Crypt" (which she loved) with her, those were too much for him.
But as for him and Ice Pirates, I just remember he said it was the stupidest film he had seen up to that time. Maybe the "space herpes" got to him, or the beheading from the swordfight.
Do you suppose that 'space herpes' and 'beheading' belong in the same sentence? Although it does fit with another scene in the movie. (:
"Space herpes".
That is pretty funny. Like the "Someone s**t on the Jackets!!!" standup at the Toronto comedy fest.
By the way, Yaddo, why not show your cousin the movie clip of DotD on this website? That is what I would do if I had a squeamish cousin.
Heh heh heh heh heh...
