For those who haven't seen or heard of it, The Last Detail was great movie made in 1973 about two veteran US sailors(Jack Nicholson, Otis Young) who have to escort a young seaman (Randy Quaid) from Norfolk, VA to the Naval Prison in Portsmouth, NH. They have 5 days to get him there and the two old salts decide to show the young guy a little bit about life before he begins his 7 year prison term.
I love this movie. I was in the Navy when I saw it and I knew guys just like the characters in this movie.
Anyway, the author of the novel it's based on is releasing a sequel book on May 1. Nicholson is interested in it and I'm sure Randy Quaid is. Otis Young died in 2001, so they are tapping Morgan Freeman for his part.
I look forward to catching up with Billy "Bad Ass" Buddusky (Jack Nicholson), Mule Mulhall (Otis Young/Morgan Freeman), and Larry Meadows (Randy Quaid) after 30 years.
The name of the new book is The Last Flag Flying by Darryl Ponicsan.
The Last Detail is a sort of overlooked classic. It has strong performances from all the leads. Randy Quaid was nominated for best supporting actor.
Trivia: Nancy Allen makes her first big screen appearance. Gilda Radner can be seen in a bit part and Michael Moriarity makes one of his first appearances.
I saw parts of this film on Bravo a few months ago and it looked good, so I will be catching it from the beginning when I get the chance. Nicholson did quite a few exceptional films in the 70's.
