Title: OT: Star Wars M&Ms
Post by: BeyondTheGrave on April 19, 2005, 01:19:38 PM
The other day I was food shopping and I bought some Star Wars m&ms hyping the new movie. They had a Jedi kind which are pretty colorful (sky blue, peach) and the Sith kind of course are dark colors.

What got me was the Sith only came in peanut. No Jedi with peanut. This led me to believe in a couple of things A). Jedi have no nuts B). I am evil for buying them C). Sith prefer peanut like treats D). The store didn't have any Jedi peanuts makeing this post pointless.

Any thoughts on this?

OK, you're supposed to be the best kick-ass force in the universe (think US Marines) and for your colors they give you "sky-blue" and "peach"?  No wonder the Jedis lost, you might as well make them pastels and be done with it.

Dunno, haven't tried them yet, but I think I will if I see them (told they're made out of dark chocolate, giving them a bit of a different taste than regular M&Ms.)

I tell you what's REALLY weird though... they have a Star Wars toy out called Darth Tater.  Yes, TATER!  It's  a MR POTOTO HEAD dressed as DARTH VADER!  I am NOT joking btw.  I've seen a few pics of it, must say it looks kind of humorous...  hehe.

Guess I'll be getting that for my daughter. She loves Darth Vader and as soon as she sees that on the shelf in a store, she's going to be wanting it.

Yeah, the marketing for the new SW flick is starting to wear a bit thin on me.  M&Ms and Potato Heads?  It's almost sickening.

Has anyone else seen the cell ringtone commercial with Chewbacca?  Way too much commercial hype around this flick.

Maybe the dark side M&M's only come in peanut for catchphrase purposes.
I think there's something catchy about hearing Darth Vader asthmatically declare, "You have learned much young Jedi. . now prepare to eat the peanuts out of my s**t."

They've overlooked one toy idea with potential though. Imagine one of those wobbly inflatable punching dummies with Jar Jar Binks on it.

Or better still, a whole line of Jar Jar stress relievers for adults - a little Jar Jar you can keep on your desk to smack, squish or throw across the room when you're tense. Soft, squishy and able to take lots of pyoonishment. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if something like this already exists.

Yeah, I'll have to get this one for the, um, kids.  (Well I may someday have kids.)

You know (and someone with more collecting experience could probably tell me this) but I can't help but wonder fi they have Star Wars bobble heads.  It wouldn't surprise me...

Funny though, the face swapping possibilities of Darth Tater seem kind of limited. Seems like a toy that looks good on the shelf, has the whole movie merchandise appeal, and a certain amount of novelty appeal, but really limited potential for play. Either the folks at Hasbro are hoping people don't consider that when they buy (a safe bet), or they're expecting most of these to wind up on the desks of geeks anyway.

A friend of mine has pretty much got every single Episode III figurine now.  So I guess there's that option.

I remember when Episode 1 came out, a friend of mine gave me a collectible pin for my birthday from the movie and I couldn't help but wonder whether it would actually be worth anything much more than it is worth now.  I mean, I have some of the original Trilogy figurines which I loved as a kid, and now are worth at least a little bit, but I don't see how something from the new trilogy being as big a collector's item, what with the incredible mass marketing that goes along with it [not that the original trilogy was innocent in this fact] and the fact that these ones aren't as universally popular as the first trilogy seems to be.

BTW that Darth Tater is pretty damn funny.

And speaking of such, I could have SWORN I read somewhere there's a version that actually speaks.  He says, among other things, "Join me and together we will rule the galaxy as father and spud!"

(Course, maybe that's just something printed on the box, I dunno...)

Yeah, I don't think movies in general have the same effect as the original Star Wars.  Star Wars was a pioneer in both special effects and in the kind of merchandising every big movie now has. The climate today just isn't the same. There is a lot more competition today in entertainment, movies, action figures, and toys in general. It's that much harder for anything to become a sweeping sensation, with the kind of longevity Star Wars had.

But the real thing that will prevent any of this stuff from becoming valuable is all the nuts who think it will. Mint action figures in their original packaging are only valuable because the vast majority of figures in the 70s and 80s were owned by kids who opened theirs up and played with them. They got worn out and wrecked and chewed on and thown away. Good ones became rare.

Today, we have a bunch of would-be collectors who understand that the old toys became valuable, but they don't seem to understand why. If scores of adults have whole sets of toys in their original packaging, stowed away in a dry, dark place, none of it is going to be worth diddly.
