Title: Saw...
Post by: saintmort on May 06, 2005, 07:53:24 AM
so I finally saw...saw (that's really annoying might I add). People kept telling me that it was this great horror movie that will totally blow you away at the end.

Alright first, I thought it was a pointless version of Se7en the only good things in the movie (in my opinion) was the creepy puppet thing and the "past murder flashbacks".

The rest of the movie seemed like this blurry of bad acting and boring mystery situations. When they finally reveal the killer I basically just go "wow you got me, but I don't care anymore".

I just want to know if others agree or am I missing something here? (IMDB it has a pretty high rating)

I'm pretty much with you on this one. It wasn't terrible but I do consider that it's quite over-rated and I found it difficult to care. Part of the problem is that usually by the time I see a movie, it has been talked about and hyped so much that there's really nowhere to go but down. One recent exception to this is Sin City...Skaboi hyped it like it was the second coming of Jesus (well, almost) so I was prepared to be disapointed just because of the build up. I saw it and I had to agree with him on it.
But overall, Saw didn't do much for me.

I can understand the bad acting in parts, but I think that the first time I saw Saw [yes it is pretty annoying] it just got me hooked.  Something about the general atmosphere just drew me in, and kept me engaged and ignoring all the bad bits.  A horror/thriller film hadn't done that for me since I saw the Ring [american] at the cinemas.

Also, I was so busy watching the film that I didn't even consider the fact that the killer was who it was.  It just totally threw me, and I thought it was brilliant.  Mind you, the second time I saw it, I could poke holes in the story and acting, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.  I don't think it would have a great longevity though...

I saw "Saw" (that IS annoying!) around Halloween 2004, and it will always be linked with the American version "The Grudge" in my mind, which was released at around the same time. My fiance and I went to see both and they illustrated, to me anyway, what scares people. Some people, like me, find the supernatural stuff more frightening. The idea of a malevolent ghost scares the hell out of me. But for people like my fiance, the real life stuff is more frightening. While "Saw" was a bit convoluted, the idea of a REAL person that's out to hurt people was more frightening to her. So she always goes for the Hannibal Lecter stuff, while I can't help shivering when a little kid says, "I see dead people!"

Did you see Saw (even more annoying)? Couldn't help myself. I need to learn to control my impulses and not torment everyone with such pointlessness. I did enjoy the movie but the fast cut footage did pull me out of the movie. Hard to feel any kind of emotional attachment to the flash back victims if they are teleporting all over the place getting tortured.

I enjoyed Saw for the most part.  Sure it's in the same vein as Se7en but I don't know if I'd go as far as to say it is a rip-off.

The ending really did it for me to.  I loved it, and absolutely didn't see it coming.  Sure the plot is convoluted and doesn't hold up very well to inspection but watching Carey Elwes hack off his foot is worth my money.

I enjoyed "Saw" a lot, but yes, sure it is overrated. The film itself is quite respectable, but the final twists are just too over the top to be taken seriously. It sure deserves a good deal of the kudos, however, because it's one of the best psycho-thrillers of the recent years.

And now that I mention it, is it possible that the whole thing was just a macabre prank? I say this because most of the people who hate the movie seem to take it too seriously, while some parts of the movie (the final act, but specially the moment when the two cops enter the villain's hideout) seem to be played tongue in cheek. Or maybe it just me and the whole audience of my favourite theatre, who were laughing out loud at those scenes.

It was okay, but I agree that it reminded me a little too much of SE7EN.
