This just about floored me, so I had to post something about it.
Okay, my wife and I are eating dinner and watching the CBS evening news. All week they've had this series going called "Beautiful World" about plastic surgery around the world. Most of it has been about the usual stuff, nose jobs, liposuction, and face lifts.
Well tonight's subject was plastic surgery for pets. They had a guy who was getting his dog (I think it was a miniature Doberman) neutered. He said the thought of the little guy without his testicles bothered him a lot, then the vet told him about these little silicone implants called "Neuticles!". I almost feel out my chair laughing and telling my wife "They're giving the dog plastic balls, this is insane!"
They interviewed a vet (apparently not the one doing the neuticle surgery) who said something I agree with, "They should really spend the money on something useful, like some serious therapy."

Unfortunately, the world is full of people with more money than sense.
There is a woman on my street who is so horribly vain that she has fitted her four month old daughter with a plastic helmet because her head was a little oblong. For those without kids, I have had three and not a single one had a round symmetrical head at four months old - they round out once the kid starts sitting up more, there's no harm in an oddly shaped head, and it really isn't that unsightly... But this woman has such a need for perfection that she bought a helmet that is actually supposed to be tightened peiodically - like braces - to gradually round the kid's head. Of course there are no studies on what the long-term possible negative effects on cognitive development, but brave women like the one on my street are letting their children pave the way in the name of cuteness.
It amazes me that there are doctors who sit around and work on stuff like that while meanwhile we have ERs so understaffed that they have doctors working 20 hour shifts.
Maybe it is a little OT, but this reminds me of the 'pressure' some in my family have given my wife and I to get our daughter's ears pierced. This pressure started when she was about one week old.
That lady is nuts; too bad her kid will pay the price for it (in more ways than one).

ulthar, with a perfectionast nut like this for a mom, any possible long-term effects of that helmet are probably going to be the LEAST of the poor girl's problems.
That with the pets, man, whenever I see stuff like that I could go up the wall !!!
Bad enough that people need pets for their private satisfaction, but when they start to regard them as humans, when they replace "pet" with "human" because they´re too f***ing retarded to realize that they have a psychologic problem - that´s really sick and ridiculous.
I saw a report about the developement in Russia after the fall of the communist regime.
In this report they showed the disparity between rich and poor in Moscow. Beggars and cripples on the streets, criminality like never before, but DOG PARLOURS are flourishing - that´s crazy... that´s pervert!!!
If YOU will ever go to a dog parlour, dog hotel (in Berlin, there is one), dog wellness farm, dog disney land, dog-five-star-restaurant or whatever,
remember that you´re doing this not for the pet, you do this for YOURSELF !!!
It´s because you´re too stupid, too idiotic to realize that you´re pet is just an animal...
