The poker spammer is back in the 'Westerns' thread and also the 'Vampires vs. Zombies' thread. I don't know if it's just a bug in my system or not, but there might be some sort of code in the post on the Westerns thread because when I clicked on the topic, I got a dialog box that popped up asking me to sign in.
Thanks for the heads up, I killed 'em.
And he is still using zombie machines, so the posts come from multiple hosts. I have been having to delete his crud off of the comments system too. I worked out some quick filters to try to keep the comments system from taking any more of those, but it was a hasty bit of work. (I will have to tweak that more.) I will have to look into what I can do with the BBS code so that I can deny posts based on certain phrases. Still trying to avoid turning on "login to post" security.
Andrew, in all honesty, the people you picked as mods are doing a great job. I noticed this and posted about it, then sent an e-mail to Trek. He had taken care of it within minutes. Spam is annoying and I will continue to point it out when I see it and it would be great if there were some simple filters but until then, you have...the MODS!
He's back now under the 'Bad "science" lines' thread...go get him.
He be gone now. Persistent little ass isn't he.
The MOD SQUAD cleans up again (:
spammers back in the "Deathlands" thread.

Got him.
You guys are quick.
That is one persistent SOB. Do they actually think that constant harassment like that makes peolple want to visit their site? I guess that no matter how many times people fall for their routines, there will always be those who never learn and keep falling for the same old tricks, which just encourages these spammers to keep doing it.
For every thousand people who get p**sed off, there are always a few idiots who will be interested, and that's all spammers care about. We're paying for other people's stupidity.
The bastards back in the "Closer" Thread

He's back now in 2 threads...
'Best MST3K movie available on VHS or DVD?'
'Spun (2004)'
I think we all need to get some money together and get a hit squad after his ass.
People who do this stuff should be tracked down and beaten severely.
When this guy is using zombie machines to circumvent the system, he knows he's doing wrong. Between that and my feelings about online gambling, I could almost change "beaten severely" to "shot in the kneecaps and staked on an anthill."
I am working on a solution that will deny the zombie from posting, without having to turn on "login to post" rules.
Funny that a bad movies board would have a "zombie" posting to it.
You die now odin.
*pokes Odin and he dies*
...Crap now I feel guilty.
Get him in the 'onion films' thread. Is there no way to stop this automated spam? How is this happening, exactly?
I picked off the "onion" post.
The SOB now posted something in the "MUST FIGURE OUT!!!!" thread.
He's getting more persistent.
I picked him off yet another time.
See "Spun (2004)" for more details...

They are probably bots. crawling the web looking for forum sites on which to post.

Bots (perl or other language scripts or even compiled programs) running on a server, or p0wn3d machine, crawl the web, visiting 'random' ip addresses until they find one that responds to certain requests (ie, a web server). Then, they look for html consistent with forum pages. It's fairly easy to set up, and it is all automated.
There are several ways to block it; log on only posting (which Andrew is trying to avoid), blocking entire blocks of IP addresses (which may cut-out legit users inadvertently), doing some pseudo session 'feedback' that is unique to your site (and maybe changes occasionally), etc. Basically, one has to do things that an automated, generic program would not know about or be able to respond to. It may mean more inconvenience to the users, as 'security' often does.
Some forum software is particularly prone to it; I adminned a server running phpbb2 0.6 for a while, and we CONSTANTLY got hammered by users registering only with links to porn sites (they did not post messages like in this case). Supposedly, phpbb2 has gotten better at it. Overall, this site seems to be pretty darn good at combatting the problem, with only a few irritants getting through from time to time.
In any case, my hat is off to Andrew and the overall effectiveness of his anti-abuse measures and the general high quality of this site. He'll get it under control, possibly only until the bot is mutated and the process starts over.
Another one bites the dust!
Sorry to keep you so busy trek...any time you want me to stop pointing them out, let me know. It's almost becoming a challenge now to be able to spot them. I come on here and see a topic that I recognize as being old and then before I look at it, I try to guess if it's been spammed.
Hey odinn7, I'm getting so paranoid about the stupid things that everytime an old post comes back I'm in there scanning it for the poker guy.
Sometimes when this comes up, I do a search of recent posts for "poker" or other keywords, just to be sure one wasn't missed.
I'm just waiting for the supreme irony, if it should start posting to this thread. Then we could just have "Poker Spammer is Back" popping to the top every time. Would actually be quite convenient.
I am continuing to fight back against the spammer. Sort of hard, since I am away from home and had to use an Internet Cafe. Hopefully, these new rules will keep out the zombie machines without causing problems for legitimate users.
The spammer fight has almost been fun in a way. As I said, I was playing a game whenever an old post would pop up...is it, or isn't it going to have poker spam in it?
Now we don't have a poker spammer but we have someone hawking loans in the Adventures of Plush Cthulhu thread. I would bet it's probably the same guy on a new money scheme.
It is the same guy. I put some rules in place to deny those type of posts now. What a persistent little bastard. Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish that our society did not frown so on using violence to solve a problem.

(:
I'm all for that also, Andrew.
He's back again with casino spam in the " Save The Green Planet (2003) " thread.
I'm starting to break down...I feel the need after months of his spamming to actually go to his site and spend money....
Right. You would think that these people would be smarter than that but I guess you can't be too smart if you need to make money by spamming.
It just somehow seems so appropriate that the poker spammer is back in the post on THE SADIST.
That is kind of amusing, isn't it?
Got him. The guy should be strung up by his thumbs.

I was thinking he should be strung up by some other...uh...body parts. (:
The sumb***h is back in the "Spider Man ORIGINAL teaser Trailer" thread.
I'm beginning to think that he's posting to the board now in a personal manner. He sees the posts are removed and now the low life has decided to keep posting when something is removed. Well, I guess that will keep him busy anyway.
My theory anyway.
It think Pokey likes seeing new posts in this topic about him. What a truly poor soul they must be to live to do nothing more than go around the web posting spam and seeing responses to their misdeeds. That is so pitiful.
Apparently Pokey has developed an ironic sense of humor. First with the spam in The Sadist thread and now in the Croc-o-s**t thread. It is good to see that Pokey has a sense of self-awareness.
I just killed him out of three other posts. Man, what a pest!!
I have website and I finally had to get a new guestbook (with spam blocking) for it because the pinheads kept filling up the old one with crap like this. I've never figured out how irritating the hell out of prospective customers gets any one to buy your stuff.
Pinheads!!
The guy is going crazy today trying to post more spam here in one day than he has in a month. What could he possibly hope to gain by doing this?
It's too bad he can't be traced to where he's posting from and be reported.
It's too bad he can't be traced to where he lives and be visited by six big guys with baseball bats. (:
Or a bunch of really pushy salesmen and missionaries.
Folks, I figured I would have to turn it on sooner or later (just because of jerks). To post a message, login is now required.
