Title: Hell of the Living Dead (1981)
Post by: Scott on May 24, 2005, 01:58:55 AM
HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD (1981) - Great Italian zombie film directed by Bruno Mattei. It's more like RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985) because it's more like a fun zombie film. Actually I think RETURN OFTHE LIVING DEAD (1985) got their general concept idea from this movie. The S.W.A.T type team are great fun to watch. I wish I knew which actor played the one team member that keeps reminding the squad that they must "hit the head" because he was really a riot. A must see for all gore/zombie fans along with CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (1980). Very entertaining and the DVD has an interview with Bruno Mattei.

Can anyone name this actor?

I liked this film as well, but there are several who hate it, including many on this board. It is also known as NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES, by which title Andrew has reviewed it and rated it pretty low. But I still like it. It also has the classic line, " Why the long face; something eating you?".

They're crap, but I LOVE Bruno Mattei's movies!  Anyone seen his new cannibal gut-muncher from a year or so ago?  I think it's called "Land of the Dead", or something like that.

God I love this freaking movie. It's a deffinate piece of crap but for me everything I like about bad movies is in there, funny stock footage, plot holes, silly dialog, etc. With all do respect to Andrew I was suprised to see it rated as a skull while Oasis of the Zombies earned a drop. Still it seems to be one of those love it or hate it type movies like Nightmare City/City of the Walking Dead.

To compare it to return of the living dead is definitely going too far in my opinion but it's a fun Italian trash. If you liked this one you might also like Mattei's Zombi 3 and Rats Night of Terror which are just as cheesey.

Andrew gave Oasis of the zombies 1 slime and Night of the Zombies a skull?! Time to reverse that! Oasis is a horrible boring flick that never goes anywhere.

Maybe the ineptitude of the "assneck" director on this one pushed Andrew over the edge : )

Your right StatCat this can't really be compared to RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, but the idea of a half comic zombie film is in both of these films.

Oh, and how about those two vomitting scenes and the little boy having lunch.

One of the interesting things is that I reviewed "Night of the Zombies" from an old VHS version.  I have the new DVD release and, not only is the print much better, but the movie is a bit longer.  If I went back and wrote the review based on the DVD, it would probably get a single slime.  On the other hand, I remember trying to decide if "Oasis of the Zombies" was going to get a skull or not.

I actually saw this film in the theatre when it was released to the states. Early 80's, zombie movie mania.

The two VHS copies I have seen, well, frankly blow, as both of them are muddy and interiors are dark. One of the VHS tapes is distributed by Creature Features which has to be one of the worst companies to distribute videos. They often cut movies to get them below a certain runtime (randomly, I might add) and have terrible quality.

I have it on VCD, which is better than the crappy VHS tapes were. I just really don't  want to spend the money for the DVD and I would certainly stay away from the DVD of it as NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES as it is the Creature Features DVD.

What was the saving grace that barely earned Oasis it's controversial one slime? Lesbians and nudity?

I think Andrew fell asleep and dreamed a better movie. (:
