Title: Watch The Skies (2005)
Post by: Mr_Vindictive on July 06, 2005, 08:04:43 AM
I was flicking through the channels last night and couldn't find anything on.  I happened to glance at TCM's listing and saw that this hour long mini documentary was on.

It was great.

The doc contains interviews with James Cameron, Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg and focuses on the evolution of science fiction films, and their childhood memories of such films.  I was quite surprised at just how good the doc was.  There was footage from most of the classic 50s SF flicks scattered throughout.

Just from my memory, here are some of the films they discussed:

Forbidden Planet
Destination Moon
The Incredible Shrinking Man
The Day The Earth Stood Still
Invaders From Mars
War Of The Worlds (1953)
Rocketship X-M
The Space Children
The Thing From Another World

It was great hearing three of the biggest directors in SF talking about their various memories and interpretations of these flicks.  Very good documentary and well worth checking out if it plays again.

I notice that you conspicuously left Mr. Lucas out. Ridley Scott barely said anything.

Spielberg and Cameron did the most talking. It was good to get their thoughts on some of these classics, as well as their reactions to seeing them as kids.
