I used some of my prize points from Sony recently to buy one of their latest DVD recorders.
Hot damn I love this thing!
I watch a ton of regular TV and there are about 7-8 shows that I watch religiously.
The problem is that I'm never usually home when they're on.
It's great to be able to record them when I'm gone.
It's so awesome to find "The First 48" or Conan O'Brien waiting for me after work.
I use this thing pretty much every day...I'm definitely getting my money's worth.
I use those DVD+RW's...they seem to be the most versatile. The only drawback is that they can be a bit pricey...a 5 pack of 4 gb Imation discs runs about $10.00 at Wal Mart. (don't know about you but I think that's expensive)
I've also found it useful to archive a lot of the stuff I have on VHS.
I recently archived Beavis & Butthead Season 2 to DVD.
I originally recorded it back in '93...(that show is priceless..I love it!)
Do any of you have a DVD recorder or have thought of buying one?

Yep I use a panasonic and it's really worth the money.
I recently got a new computer with a tv tuner card [so i can capture footage for various short film projects and what not] and once I get proper reception, it's great, because not only can I set it on timer like a VCR, but also edit out the commercials in post [if i could be bothered]. All I need to do after that is burn it onto CD/DVD and its all good.
I tell ya, it's going to be very handy once I hook it up to a good antenna.
I have one on my PC. It's a Benq and works like a dream since the day I bought it. Most of the time I use it to store DivX movies. I can fit 6 into a 4 Gb. DVD, and thanks to that I'm saving tons of space.
It must be great to have one like ASHTHECAT, to record stuff from TV, but right now I think they are too expensive. I may get one sooner or later if the prices start droping.
One thing about my particular recorder that I noticed is how big & bulky it is.
Ever see electronic items that were made in the 1980's and how cheesy they look compared to stuff made today?
I kind of see my recorder like that. It's huge and not physically the greatest looking model out there.
In a few years I'll get another one and then I'll look at my current one and see how dated it looks.
I picked up a Panasonic a couple of months ago and love it! If you watch the sales you can pick up a 25 pack of DVD-Rs or +Rs for about $10.
Mostly I use mine to archive old VHS tapes. I have a ton of stuff that is either out of print or never released on DVD, so it's great to be able to convert over to smaller and more permanent format.

Really, remember when these machines were so big and had dials on them? We were one of the first on our block to have a VCR back when they were selling for around $700. My dad won it from a give-away at his work. It was top loading, had push buttons and it had dials to tune the channels. The remote was also high tech...it had about a 15' cord and a slide switch: play-pause. I miss those days.

I do remember top loading VCRs with push buttons, but as a child of the 80's I have to say, the 15' cord with a slide switch is not one of those things I remember. Although I must say, I do miss floppy disks and my old apple mac with the green, black and white screen, with no mouse but a dial sort of thing. There was something about have to type instructions while playing text games that somewhat can't be captured in these days of modern gaming.
