I think The John Carpenter remake  has kept the right spirit of this English TV SCI-FI thriller

Actually, "Village of the Damned" is based on a book by John Wyndem.  The book was named "The Midwich Cuckoos" . The original British version was a movie made in 1960.

I saw this one as a first run movie, which got me interested in Wyndem's books.  He tended to write shorter horror novels with a style that Stephen King used once.  Everything is set in a very realistic, everyday setting where nothing unusual could possibly happen.  Of course, then something REALLY unusual happens.

If you haven't seen the 1960 version, try to find it.  It is out on VHS.  It stars George Saunders and Barbara Steele.

Wyndem also wrote the book that was the basis for "The Day of the Triffids".

I saw the original but not the remake.  It's great and the posters for that movie are incredible, usually with an incrdible price tag.

Which one? I have seen both. And unless one wants to see alot of graphic violence in the American version, the best one to see is the British version. It exceeds the American version in all aspects, except for the violence. (IMHO)

I have only seen Carpenter's version, and despite its bad reviews (most consider it dull and boring) I still think it is very good, if you like Carpenter's movies. Anyway, if you are into reading, I strongly recommend you to read both
"The Midwich cookoos" and "The day of the Trifids". Both are outstanding novels and surely you will find a lot of interesting stuff that didn't make it into the movies.
