Title: Oldboy
Post by: Mofo Rising on September 04, 2005, 09:38:36 PM
Every once in a while, a film comes along that seems like it has reached into the back of your brain and put on screen everything you didn't know you wanted to see.  2004 must have been a good year, because first there was SHAUN OF THE DEAD and now there is OLDBOY.  (American release dates.)

OLDBOY's got verve and visual style to spare, and a relentlessly pounding soundtrack that propels the film along with more energy than most anything I've seen recently (with the possible exception of LAYER CAKE).  And I didn't just write that sentence because I shamelessly ape the reviewing style of hack film critics, I really mean it.  The film is almost endlessly, and perversely, inventive.  There were many moments where I was just laughing because of the sheer surprise of the moment.  "Laugh and the world laughes with you. . ."

If you're look for some damn good pulp cinema, OLDBOY is your go-to film.

*MINOR SPOILERS*
The weak link in the picture is, naturally, the story.  There really isn't much of one.  Also, the central twist is telegraphed fairly early in the movie.  I thought to myself, "Man, I hope this movie doesn't go down that road."  Well, indeed it did.  Still, it's a minor quibble with a film I otherwise wholeheartedly endorse.  I'm looking forward to seeing more movies by the director.

It's on my list. The next time I use Netflix I'll que OLDBOY up with ICHI THE KILLER.

I have to agree.  Great film.  I would agree the storyline probably is the weakest link, but I still thought it was good.  Just sticks out because of how excellent everything else was.  I can't quite remember his name, but the lead actor was amazingly great.

I've been singing Oldboy's praises ever since I got an import copy of it on DVD last year.  It is by far the best film that I have seen in a long time.  It has a bit of action, a strong sense of humor and (for me atleast) a strong story.  To be completely honest, this film IMHO was near perfect.

If you guys enjoyed Min-sik Choi (Oh Daesu) then check out The Crying Fist.  Excellent film.

A very good movie. Liked the way the flashbacks were shot, without interferring with the present-day scenes. Felt repulsed at some stages, though, but again I guess everybody is.
