Just saw the trailer. What in the world is this?
I just wrote up a lengthy review of the movie (based on the Russian DVD) for my web site:
Lots of pics and 99% spoiler free!
You know this was suppose to come out in thearters this past summer but I think It was pushed back till next year.

Many thanks. It is coming out in Belgium in two weeks time. I won't miss it!
It was your review that caught my interest in this movie. I'm keeping an eye out for it.
Nice review BTW.
I think it looks pretty interesting, but I despair for it ever getting a theatrical release here in Phoenix.

Thanks.
I was very intrigued by the theatrical trailer that I saw online a while ago. The review posted above is great and makes me want to see this movie even more. I am cautious of horror movies these days, especially vampire/werewolf movies, given the way things like Underworld and Blade Trinity went, but I am interested to see the 'Russian take' on this genre.
Does anyone know how to save/download the Quicktime trailer? I've been trying to get the URL from the Source but I can't seem to make it work.

Very tricksy they are these hobbitses.
It doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense, but it is interesting and entertaining all around, and has lots of cool visuals.
Well gee I hate to dig up 2 year old threads, but I hate to start new ones when there already is one ...
So anyway,
I finally got to watch this film late last night, and it was pretty cool. Filmed in Russia, the dubbing wasn't that great, wasn't that bad either. Being a little hard of hearing I tend to read lips and listen and this just doesn't work to well with dubbed films.
I thought the film was a little over the top with some of the CGI, it came across as look we have a new toy and we're going to wear it out. I really liked the cinematography it was a fresh change from a lot of the same ol same ol in America films. Extreme angles, slo-mo in unusual spots, color shifts and the lot. A few gags here and there to keep it from being to serious. Like the hot rod truck flipping over the guy. Overall a really enjoyable film with a good storyline, now I have to find the books and read them.
Night Watch 2 (Day Watch) is already out, not officially released in the US yet but there are bootlegs copies floating around and they are already filming Night Watch 3 which is being filmed in English and funded by Fox since 1 and 2 made a splash, should be interesting to see how bad they screw up the trilogy by sticking their Hollyweird hand on it.
Anyway as far as this films goes I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5.

This is serendipity indeed. Just today I finally got started on the book, and lo and behold, my ancient thread gets revived.
I have seen the film in the meantime, and I found it a refreshing change from the usual glossy productions. Mind you, many times I wondered WTF was going on.
Night Watch is great, and luckily for me, the Melbourne International Film Festival is playing "Day Watch" the sequel here either this week or the next, at cinemas, so yippees all round. I missed the initial theatre run here of Night Watch, but I have the dvd, so I'm looking forward to seeing the next one on the big screen.
According to IMDB, we'll get Day Watch in Belgium in October :twirl:. I think I will have finished the book by then. There ought to have been a limited US release in June.
I got the Russian DVD of DAY WATCH about a year ago. I like it even better than NIGHT WATCH.

Same here. I loved watching it, but I'm still in the dark about a lot of the plot. I also bagged the sequel and it left me with just as many questions. I will say this, though. It's nice to look at.
It was a bit confusing to me on the first viewing too, but if you watch it closely a few times, it all makes sense.
Well, I'm hoping that reading the book will enlighten me.
I guess I watch to many weird art house and foreign films as I feel I kinda of got the story a little ways in to it, whereas I'll watch some mainstream American movies and set there and go WTF? Granted it was a little difficult to follow at first, coming from an American mindset of either no storyline or in your face story line, it was a little deeper and darker and really, really cool and I can't wait to see the next 2.
I've got the Region 1 DVD of this very interesting though flawed flick. I've read that the original Russian version is about 10 minutes longer and that Fox/Searchlight changed up the order of some scenes in the international version in addition to cutting some scenes in an attempt to make the movie more logical.
also, the sequel, Day Watch, has already been done/released elsewhere and I think that the 3rd film in the trilogy is being filmed here in America.
I just saw the FOX preview to "Day Watch" ... WHOA! WOW! Looks awesome!
It was on the new Pathfinder DVD and said "Day Watch" was coming soon to DVD.
Ok gonna watch Pathfinder now.

Cool beans! I've heard that Day Watch is supposed to be quite good.
Night Watch approaches being catastrophically awful. It's one of the worst films I've seen recently (well, a friend of mine bought it and we watched it like 5 months ago), and keep in mind I rent a good deal of straight-to-video fodder.
All the characters are dull, the pacing is glacial, the action scenes (if you want to call them that) are poorly executed... And the movie is just flat out boring. It does have some decent visuals, and some of the acting is OK, and I think the concept is very good (I remember watching the Russian trailer a year or two ago and thinking it would be great)... That's about the only praise I can give it.
I'd give it a 2/10, and I think I'm being generous.
