Title: OT: Hurricane Rita
Post by: Susan on September 21, 2005, 07:42:29 PM
Is anyone here from the gulf coast? Scary prospect, hopefully it weakens as it's a 5, nothing that strong has ever hit.  I'm also scared of gas prices, CNN money said worst case scenario if oil rigs in the gulf are shut down we could see gas spike up to $5. I filled up my tank today since I needed some anyhow.  A cold front is coming through north texas, and with the hurricane plowing through they said we can expect 10 inches of rain, strong winds and tornados in Dallas (where i am). I sure hope these stupid apt. contractors finish the siding and roofwork on my building before it starts up. Arrrrgh!

The sad part is there's no place for most of these evacuees to go, a coworker said a friend of hers from Houston was asking to stay with her because all the hotels and motels were still booked up from Katrina.  So where are we gonna put 1.3 million, even if it's just for a couple of days?  All this because the water temperature raised 1 degree in the past few decades. damn global warming! It's the day after tomorrow!!

I still say that osama bin laden is using black magic in some deep, dark, damp Afghan cave lit only by candles.  And it's really hot in the cave too.
His eyes are rolled back in his head and there's a deep baritone hum and he's sitting indian style with his arms out, palms up chanting evil things to literally will these storms to us.

All kidding aside, hope you stay safe Susan!  It isn't coming by where you live is it?

Global warming or Weather cycles?

Try warming up the ionsphere with these devices and see what you come up with.

I'm on the West Coast but I am praying for everyone's safety down there. I also plan to make a donation soon when I got quite a bit saved up.

Damn, another Hurricane on its way.  If the bad weather keeps up I might even start believing Ash's explanation for it...

By the way Scott, what the bloody hell are those things in that picture?  They look like giant Hills Hoist clotheslines, like the one we have in our back yard [though this one isn't it]

[Sorry, don't know how to make it smaller...]

Hey..I lived in Dallas for 13 years.I left for Arizona in 94. I love Dallas. My daughter was born there. We lived in Richardson. I used to listen to Q102 FM. Is that still on the air? Susan wrote:

Ash - he's probably in there with a few ouijia boards and witch doctors.   Yeah, the hurricane will come this way, it may create quite a mess over texas in general. My area will start seeing rain and wind on saturday but we expect strong storms all through next Thursday as the eye approaches,. according to the national weather service. I have flood prone areas near my house and work in a high rise building so i really don't like the idea of tornados or driving through that mess. They showed on the news this morning a steady stream of people from the coast on the highway coming up here. I don't know where they think they're going unless they know somebody.

Ellie - I used to listen to Q102 all the time too! Well, it's not around anymore. Now there's a new station that is called Jack FM (different station tho but same type of music). I used to live in Garland near richardson, now i'm in Plano. I also used to live in Tucson Arizona when I was a kid! :) I loved it there

I don't know if this pic will keep from updating to something else but here is Rita's projected path. I sure hope everyone got out of galveston, the storm surge is 50 feet which could submerse galveston island and clip new orleans and break the levy's there once again. This will be the strongest hurricane to ever hit the U.S. They don't go higher than a category 5

Stay safe Susan!  We just went through a direct hit from Ophelia here in NC, which pales in comparison to this storm.

It's quite strange how many storms we've had this year.  I can't remember the last time we had so many hurricanes in such a short period of time.

Well, Susan. I'm only thirty miles down the road from ya. And if the storm track keeps going the way it is going, it does look like it'll hit our area this weekend. Which weekend I fortunately have off, as I worked last weekend. I thought about getting out this weekend, but if it gets real bad, I might just hunker down over the weekend.

Of course, we Texans are tought as old boot leather. If I can survivie the tornado that hit where I lived, while I was at work. The tornado that hit where I work, while I was at work. I expect to survive this.

And that  does not include the volcanic eruption in Washington State. The flood in Oregon. The earthquakes in California and Washington State.  The cyclones in Montana. That other tornado in Illinois, And that other hurricane in Rhode Island. And I'm still alive and posting. And I expect to be back to posting on Monday, if I can get into work on Monday, after my weekend off.

At this point i wouldn't mind leaving town, not becuase of the hurricane but because of the MILLIONS OF PEOPLE who keep flooding in here everytime a hurricane hits! I went to work this morning and the highways were just insane, we have more people coming to dallas than we can hold. I just wanna stand outside with a sign and say "keep going, oklahoma is OPEN!".  No gas lines here but some gas statiosn are getting crowded, lots of fear of rising gas prices is freaking people out. My company has an 800 number for employees to keep us up to date on offices closing since they had to shut down in houston, galveston and corpus.

My brother is in Palestine and it looks like they may get it worse rainwise but it's hard to tell, I remember 10 years ago hurricane remnants wreaked havok here with flooding.

Kevin - yeah when tornados come we get outside in our lawn chairs to watch ;-)  I just can't stand all the rain and flooding, my area of town tends to flood easily with just a few inches of rain.  I've lived through my fair share, major dust storms in Arizona, earthquakes and a typhoon in the philippines, plenty of tornados, floods and hail...even lightning struck my house once.

Imagine being those folks out on the highway though who have been sitting in standstill traffic for 8 hours and ran out of gas. If i was them i wouldn't have gone to dallas! Stupid! I would have veered off and headed to san antonio and further west...i don't wanna follow the crowd.

No offense Kevin, but stay the hell out of Ohio, ok?  I just bought  a house and don't want it ruined.

I'm just getting back from fleeing. I live in the Corpus Christi area, and when it looked like we might get it, I got my family and parents out of there. We were under mandatory evacuation Thursday (yesterday), so we drove up to my sister's house west of Austin. This morning, when it was obvious that God was chasing New Orleans folk only (first Katrina, and now Rita is wrecking New Orleans further and chasing the evacuees who were moved to Arkansas and Tennessee out of Houston), we came back home. I went through Celia in 1970 (120 mph winds; the eye passed over us), and I don't really relish the idea of going through another one.

I also don't recommend travelling with a skittish cat; ours was so scared she still hasn't gone to the bathroom (24+ hours). Talk about being scared s**tless...

Gotta love pay-tv - I've been sitting down here in Australia, safe and sound, watching the Fox News coverage of Rita for the last 11 hours...  good luck to those affected. Luckily it sounds like it may not be as bad (in places) as it could have been - hopefully it will stay that way.

I take it you are either a really big Hurricane fan, or you really hate AFL, to watch that for the last 11 hours.

I keep hearing conflicting things about Rita.  I heard on one news channel that it's category will drop to a four, but another said it will pick up to a five. [or are they both right and I just flicked channels at the wrong time?]

Too late, raj. I've already been in Ohio, when i attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, for one summer.

He's alive! He's alive! No, the good news is that--apparently--the hurricane was downgraded, before it hit land, from a Category 5 to a Category 3.

If anything, this storm has taught him the four stages of concern.

Stage 1
Concern for oneself.

Stage 2
Acceptance

Stage 3
Relief

Stage 4
Concern for others

And, if anybody has seen the Texas-sized traffic jams that resulted from the evacuation, it is with the realization that our elected officials from local to county to state to regional to federal, have not yet learned how to deal with a disaster of any great magnitude.

How are you doing, Susan? Any rain, where you were? We didn't even get any rain from the storm. Yeah, I had forgotten about the dust storms in California, and the hail that hit, where I live now. Though, lightning is the one thing I have managed to avoid up to now. Though, lightning did strike the tree under which my parents, before they were married, were sheltering. That is just after they got to better cover. How different life would have been, if they had been under that tree, when lightning struck.
