Title: The best DVD value of them all????
Post by: The Burgomaster on October 18, 2005, 01:47:40 PM
I think I have stumbled upon the best DVD value of them all.  There have been several threads about various "50 movie packs" posted here (including some of my own).  At first, I was skeptical . . . how could you buy 50 movies on 12 DVDs for only about $20 and expect ANY QUALITY WHATSOEVER?  Well, I have become a fan and purchased 6 of these 50 movie sets and have been surprised and pleased by the overall picture and sound quality.  However, the set that I bought yesterday looks like it might blow the others away.  It is the

CHILLING CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK ($19.95 at Best Buy)

So far, I have watched:

* JESSE JAMES MEETS FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER
* CHRISTMAS EVIL (aka TERROR IN TOYLAND)
* LADY FRANKENSTEIN
* CATHY'S CURSE

I was extremely pleased with the picture and sound quality of the first 3 movies on the above list.  I'd rate them at VHS quality or slightly better.  CATHY'S CURSE wasn't quite as good.  The video is scratchy in some scenes, the color is faded in some scenes, the picture seems "pixillated" at times, etc.  But still watchable.  And considering that each movie only costs about 40 cents, I can live with a few flaws.

I still have 46 more movies to watch, and get a load of this line-up (remember, all for only $19.95):

* DEATH RAGE (an Italian gangster movie starring Yul Brynner)
* MEMORIAL VALLEY MASSACRE
* MEDUSA
* DEADTIME STORIES
* SCREAM BLOODY MURDER
* BELL FROM HELL
* METAMORPHOSIS
* NAKED MASSACRE
* HAUNTS
* DRILLER KILLER (I already have this on a separate DVD, so I probably won't watch this one)
* HORROR EXPRESS (I already have this on a separate DVD, so I probably won't watch this one)
* SNAKE PEOPLE
* SISTERS OF DEATH
* WAR OF THE ROBOTS
* OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES
* WITCHES' MOUNTAIN
* DEEP RED (I already have this on a separate DVD - - the full-length version, with some scenes that were never dubbed into English - - so I probably won't watch this one)
* REVENGE OF DR. X (written by Ed Wood, Jr. . . read the review in THE PSYCHOTRONIC VIDEO GUIDE if you want a good laugh)
* BAD TASTE
* VIRUS
* MILPITAS MONSTER
* FUNERAL HOME
* SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT
* PANIC
* MESSIAH OF EVIL
* BLANCHEVILLE MONSTER
* ALPHA INCIDENT
* DEMONS OF LUDLOW
* THE COLD
* HANDS OF A STRANGER
* GOTHIC
* MAN IN THE ATTIC (Jack Palance as Jack the Ripper!)
* THE DEMON
* CRYPT OF THE LIVING DEAD
* TRACK OF THE MOON BEAST
* THE GHOST
* DR. TARR'S TORTURE DUNGEON
* THE BLOODY BROOD
* HOUSE OF THE DEAD
* SLASHED DREAMS
* BUCKET OF BLOOD (I already have this on a separate DVD, so I probably won't watch this one)
* HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND (I already have this on a separate DVD, so I probably won't watch this one)
* LEGEND OF BIGFOOT
* DEVIL'S HAND
* I BURY THE LIVING
* DRIVE-IN MASSACRE

In my opinion, this blows away the list of movies on both the HORROR CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK and the SCI-FI CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK.  So far, this is the best DVD value I have seen for fans of bad (and some not-so-bad) "Chilling Classics."

Sounds like a good deal.

I just watched Sisters of Death last night (I got it last year at Dollar Tree for $1) and it was really poor but it did keep my interest. One thing I found funny in it, and let me know if you see the same thing when you watch it, the 2 guys in it looked like Starsky and Hutch clones. I was having trouble keeping my mind in the movie because I was waiting for them to do Starsky and Hutch things. Also, the boom mic kept appearing in numerous scenes...funny stuff. One thing that really got me about it though, they had Claudia Jennings as a star (a playboy playmate of the year) and never fully utilized her...um...talents. Why have a playmate of the year in a movie if she's going to keep her clothes on?

Silent Night, Bloody Night.....ouch that one hurts.

I bought an "Evil Places" set a while back with a few films that normally show up in those types of sets.  Satan's School For Girls, Don't Look In The Basement, House On Haunted Hill, and Silent Night, Bloody Night.  Terrible, awful movie and yet I've watched it a few times since I bought it.  The plot is stupid, the movie is insanely dark (not well lit) and the acting is awful.

Ah, but Satan's School for Girls is awesome.  And to think that Charlie's Angels was the next step....

Is it just me or did the first post of this thread sound like an infommercial.

All this for just $19.95.  That's all 50 movies on 12 DVDs for $19.95...........

Here are the ones I liked in order:

1) Bell From Hell
2) Lady Frankenstien
3) Horror Express
4) I Bury the Liviing
5) Horrors of Spider Island
6) Bucket of Blood
7) War of the Robots
8) Oasis of Zombies

Some thoughts on some of the films.

*JESSE JAMES MEETS FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER - Ouch this one hurt. You should still see it though.
* LADY FRANKENSTEIN - Actually I really like this film. This is one worth owning. Sara Bay as Lady Frankenstein
* CATHY'S CURSE - Been curious about this DVD cheapie. Haven't seen it.
* BELL FROM HELL - Yes, very good movie. Worth the $20.00 you payed for the pack. You will enjoy this one.
* HORROR EXPRESS - One of the Great cheapie DVD's in my opinion.
* SNAKE PEOPLE - Been wanting to see this Mexican Boris Karloff film.
* SISTERS OF DEATH - Own it on VHS. Terrible. Terrible Terrible. Boring.
* WAR OF THE ROBOTS - A B-Movie must for everyones collection.
* OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES - I liked it.
* BAD TASTE - Poory executed, but kinda fun. Spooning out the brains !
* SILENT NIGHT, BLOODY NIGHT - Dark cinematography and boring.
* MESSIAH OF EVIL - This is a boring film. Couldn't give it to me for free.
* MAN IN THE ATTIC  - Jack Palance ? I Will seek it out.
* THE DEMON - Is this the British b/w film?
* THE GHOST - Barbara Steele I believe. It's ok, nothing special if it's the one I think it is. Only for Steele completist.
* BUCKET OF BLOOD - Good one. A must see Corman film.
* HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND - Loved it. Everyone must own a copy.
* DEVIL'S HAND - I think I own this on but haven't view it yet. From my Horrible Horror Collection.
* I BURY THE LIVING - This is a good one starring Richard Boone. Worth a look.

The rest I never heard of.................

Wow! Bad Taste? I'm surprised that Peter Jackson let this movie slide to the 50-movie pack level! I know it's full of cheez galore, but with his credentials  that's like "THX-1138" being allowed onto the sci-fi 50 pack, or "Duel" in the horror pack(IMHO).

I've seen Bad Taste mentioned on quite a few public domain movie lists, though I can't for the life of me figure out how a movie from the 1980s can be in the public domain (considering certain court rulings during the 1970s that extended copyright for the next several thousand light years).

Well Mr. The Burgomaster you did such a good job describing this set that you finally convinced me and I bought this collection off e-bay today. Now, I'll be waiting with eager paws for this to come in the mail. Thanks for the title list of the movies that was a big help.

Scott:

THE DEMON is actually a Cameron Mitchell movie from 1981.  I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure it must be bad.

I started watching PANIC the other night.  It's a slow, badly dubbed Italian horror movie from the 1970s.  I got through about 30 minutes of it.  I plan to suffer through the rest of it this weekend.  Pray for me.
