Just looking at the schedule for IFC leading up to Halloween, some cool stuff that I haven't seen.
(All times Eastern)
Saturday, Oct. 22
8:00PM & 1:30AM: GINGER SNAPS (2000)
John Fawcett's clever, wickedly funny werewolf-as-puberty metaphor shows us the
spectacular fallout when one of the Fitzgerald sisters, suburban goth girl outcasts, gets
bitten by something in the woods (and it ain't a neighborhood dog). 8pm
10:00PM & 3:30AM: GINGER SNAPS II: UNLEASHED (2004)
In Brett Sullivan's "Ginger Snaps" sequel, a runaway Brigitte Fitzgerald (Emily Perkins)
gets tossed into rehab after she collapses. What's a girl who's been holding off becoming a
killer beast by mainlining an anti-werewolf herb to do? 10pm
11:45PM: MADMAN (1982)
Legend has it, if you say serial killer Madman Marz's name out loud, he'll come for you.
So what's the first thing one of those damn cocky camp counselors does? Joe Giannone's
80s B-movie classic is a cut above your average slasher flick. 11:45pm
Saturday, Oct. 29
11:45PM: THE WICKER MAN(1973)
Though studio owner Michael Deeley called it one of the worst he'd ever seen, Robin
Hardy's unique horror film has now been crowned by many as one of the greatest British
films of all time, and is being remade here by Neil LaBute. 8pm
9:45PM & 2:15AM: PAPERHOUSE (1988)
This unappreciated, terrifying masterpiece from Bernard Rose follows Anna, a lonely,
sick girl who draws a house on a hill, only to begin visiting it in her dreams. It contains a
crippled, mysterious boy, and something else, dark and terrible. 9:45pm
11:30M & 4:00AM: HABIT (1997)
Director Larry Fessenden has long been an underground hero, making smart horror films
on a very indie budget. With "Habit," in which he also stars, he brilliantly reinvents the
vampire flick for urban living (and dying). 11:30pm
Sunday, Oct. 30
8:00M & 1:00AM: PIRANHA (1978)
Who needs that overgrown shark when you have...fish? But, like, lots of them â€" and
they're genetically altered! Joe Dante's hilarious "Jaws" spoof still gets some scares in,
along with an appearance by "Black Sunday"'s Barbara Steele. 8:00pm
9:45M & 2:45AM: THE ADDICTION (1995)
Another ambitious take on urban vampirism, Abel Ferrara's elegantly black-and-white
film stars Lili Taylor as a grad student who gets bitten by a stranger and soon finds herself
dealing with a constant jonesing for blood. 9:45pm
11:15PM & 4:15AM: MADMAN (1982)
Legend has it, if you say serial killer Madman Marz's name out loud, he'll come for you.

9:00M & 1:00AM: WENDIGO (2001)
Larry Fessenden's best film is an exercise in slow-building dread that stars Patricia
Clarkson and Jake Weber as a bickering couple taking their son ("Malcolm in the
Middle"'s Eric Per Sullivan) on an ominous vacation in the woods.9pm
11:00M & 3:00AM: MANIAC (1980)
A viscerally gory landmark exploitation film, William Lustig's "Maniac," which stars Joe
Spinell as a grotesque but not completely unsympathetic killer, was banned in both the
UK and Germany when it was first released. 11pm

I have this on DVD. It's one of my favorite werewolf films ever!

I really want to see this and the prequel, but haven't gotten around to them yet.

Don't read anything about this online if you haven't seen it. Definitely one that you don't want spoiled. Terrific movie! With naked Ingrid Pitt and Brit Eckland!

Very original vampire film. One of the more interesting recent films on the subject.

Well made, but it's either a "love it or hate it" proposition. I'm in the "love it" camp myself.
A lot of good stuff in there, and some glaring gaps in my viewing history will be filled. There' s no excuse for me not to have seen "The Wicker Man" by now, and I need to see those "Ginger Snaps" sequels.
Now if they'd only release a decent, widescreen American disc of "Ginger Snaps."
Gigner Snaps 1 and 2, Wicker Man, Madman Marz, and Wendigo (a personal favorite)! I'm having a geekgasim.....I need to go clean up....
Its much better than AMC's Monstervision lineup this year. I was quite disappointed.

That is a mental image I so did not need right now...
Wicker Man is great, the folksy music is interesting as well. I borrowed the dvd a while back which had two versions of the film on it, but only got around to watching the original cut, not the directors cut. Very enjoyable overall.
Well, Ginger Snaps was awesome, and the sequel was excellent as well. So nice to see that there are writers out there (in Canada) that don't get all their ideas from watching TV shows. Great characters as well. These are the kind of movies that should make Hollywood hang their heads in shame over the crap they put out.
Madman wasn't so impressive. Nothing especially bad about it, just a completely by-the-numbers Friday the 13th type movie. Most of it takes place in the woods at night, but they lit the actors so brightly that they look like they're in broad daylight. A tad much, you think? The music during the hot tub scene (where you get to see the guy's bare butt but nothing from the girl) was so incredibly cheesy it was unbelievable. Even in '82 people would have laughed.
*possible spoilers*
I saw Paperhouse and loved it, it was one of the scariest movies I've seen (due to the fact that I hadn never heard anything about it beforehand). The main thing I like about it is how realistic the dream-world sequences are- they're very simple and, well, dreamlike. However, if I remember correctly, the child actress was incredibly annoying, and the ending dragged on.
Tonight was PIRANHA, THE ADDICTION and MADMAN.
THE ADDICTION I'd seen and wisely decided to skip. If I'm going to be forced to swallow a philosophical dissertation, I'd like it to be wrapped up in a good movie. This crap about vampires certainly isn't it.
I wasn't too impressed with MADMAN, although I decided to sit through it. It's not that it was terrible, it just had nothing of interest for me. Watching it was like a hour and a half test of will by way of paying attention to something that I found completely boring. Notable for presence of DAWN OF THE DEAD's Gaylen Ross and one actor who happens to have the same name as my father. (Okay, that last fact may not hold as much interest for you as it did for me.)
Wait a minute. Of course. . . the refrigerator. That's perfect! I've changed my mind, MADMAN is brilliant.
Anyway, I don't think I'll stick around for PIRANHA.
