Any thoughts? Anybody going to see it?
My personal opinion: Any industry that has to rely on video games for its source material must be stagnant in the originality department (imagine, PARCHEESI: THE MOTION PICTURE!)
I already saw Resident Evil, and this one doesn't even have Milla Jovovich in it. And the CGI looks waaaaay awful.
I'm sure the plot will be a multi-faceted masterpiece of gripping suspense though.
Hmm, a rewritten video game movie starring a wrestler and undergone several rewrites. I think I'll wait for it to hit TV.

Hell yeah I'm going to see it!
Probably this Sunday.
I'm going because The Rock is one of my favorite actors. If he wasn't in it, I doubt I'd go.
I may have to go see it. The extended first person shooter scenes seem like such a delightfully terible idea that they can't help but be entertaining.
I've also been considering whether or not to like Uwe Boll, though. I like how arrogant he is about his clearly terrible movies, and I find the theory that his entire existence is due to a loophole in German tax law to be amusing. I've only seen "House of the Dead," though. More research is required.
Hell yeah, I'm going too! I've been a fan of Doom since the days of my 486. I can't call myself a gamer, and not go see this.
It looks terrible, but the reviews have been pretty decent. Most are saying only to go see it if you are looking for mindless action, which sounds pretty damned good to me. I can't wait to see the first person perspective used in a film.....especially if it involves a "Pinky" demon and a chainsaw.
Three Oranges, as for the thing about Uwe Boll....I'm one of his few fans. His movies are so damned bad that they are hugely entertaining. House Of The Dead was awful, but Alone In The Dark was actually much better. It seems the man is actually starting to learn a few things about directing a film.
NOOOOOOOOO! Skaboi you've crossed over to the darkside!! All our years of positive indifference gone! BLAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
S"ok, just means now I get to tease you. But back to DOOM, From what I've read while it does have something to do with the game they did remove the whole hell element and thats really p**sed off quite a few fans and gamers as that did add a lot to what DOOM was.
However I have read that what they did do here was pretty cool, they very much emulated the look and feel of the game quite well and its a wonderful cheese fest with gore and language and some scares mixed in.
Sounds like a wonderful addition to our little forum here :)
The trailers make it look like it's a cheesy knock off of Resident Evil set on Mars. It's going to be bad in such horrible ways.
The tag line I caught was: "The final 10% of the human genome has been unravelled and all Hell is breaking loose."
Here's a question: Is Uwe Boll a modern day Ed Wood? Or does his attitude deny him such a comparison?
I've been a fan of the whole Doom thing for the better part of my life, though not a hardcore fan [I didn't even buy Doom3, but only vaguely saw a demo]
But I'll probably want to go see this film. Whether or not I go or not depends on how its recieved when it's released, but if I don't see it on the big screen, I'll definitely rent the DVD as soon as it's out.
I just looked on IMDB and the plot keywords, some of which are:
Based On Video Game
Corporate Crime
Portal To Hell
Super Soldier
Accident
Alien Invasion
Hell
Martian
Soldier
Space Marine
Zombie
Genetic Mutation
Gore
Multiple Monsters
I mean, whilst it may not translate into a brilliant film by any means [and were Doom fans really expecting something other than a mindless action flick??] but I think it's hard to go too wrong with some key words like that!
"It seems the man is actually starting to learn a few things about directing a film."
That's a shame. As the idiot king of films he might've had a chance to be compelling, but if he starts getting better, the only thing he'll approach is mediocrity.
I'm under the impression that you all think Doom was directed by Uwe Boll...not so.
Andrecz Bartkowiak directed it. (or however his name is spelled)
He's mostly known as a cinematographer but has directed a few clunkers.
Either way, I'm still going to go see Doom.
I've been playing the s**t outta Doom 3 on my X Box lately...so it's helped me to get into Doom movie mode. :)

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it a few weeks ago in December. I was expecting something like the awful Resident Evil movie, but it was a much more involved and atmospheric movie. I was also not expecting it to be as graphically violent, either. The characters make some decent performances, the action scenes aren't bad, and even the plot wasn't as cliched as the descriptions might make it seem. You can wait for the DVD rental, but by all means, check it out if you want something a little better than you may expect.
(As you can guess, I haven't been on the board for a long time, and I'm just catching up with the past month's threads!)

I went to see DOOM in the theaters, mostly because I had free time and I wanted to see the "first person shooter" segment.
First off, they removed Hell. Why? Hell is the whole goddamned (mug) point.
It's not terrible. It's just not good. Space marines wander around station for an hour and a half, occasionally getting eaten.
Oh well. The girl was hot.
Instead, maybe I'll reload my copy of Doom or II or III and play the game instead.
Mortal Kombat- and the ill-fated sequel- taught me a lesson about a video-game inspired movie, and that is it's a quirk of fate that the movie can either be good or totally awful.
I'll probably see it on DVD, but I still can't understand adapting a game with a good story, but not keeping the story. A dimensional gateway to Hell is far more interesting than yet another movie with genetically created monsters and zombies. As a hokey plot device, genetic engineering is this generation's atomic power.
While the movie can't possibly be considered anything but abysmal, it DID make me and my friend laugh on quite a few occassions.
***the following contains "SPOILERS" but not really, you can't spoil something that is practically impossible to enjoy***
The character of PINKY and his little wheelie-rig was hillarious. When he is handed a gun and left to defend himself he yells out to the marine "why don't you go f**k yourself!?" but says it with absolutely NO CONVICTION and in the wimpiest way possible. impossible not to laugh. When he becomes a monster and his wheelie-rig is trailing after him...priceless.
the one marine looking up into the air-ducts that has the "great" line after being spooked and asked "what was it?" he says "A MONKEY! SOME KIND OF MONKEY!" wow.
The scientist that rips his ear off and stares at it. wow.
When the mutant is trapped halfway in the door. The scenes that follow where conversations are taking place and he is visible in the background...he kinda looks like he's waving hi.
The first person scene was funny. I actually would have loved the movie if they had shot it entirely in first person. The one monster that jumps out but then promptly RUNS AWAY was so stupid, I couldn't help but smile.
The method of teleporting was incredibly lame.
The movie could have benifitted from having more than two colors on screen. Theres only so much black and blue you can look at. The art department was REAL lazy.
That said, I would watch it again, but only with people I knew would appreciate much of it's stupidity.
It's kind of sad that DOOM: The RPG for mobile phones probably has more happening in terms of plot. Why they didn't make a movie based on the original Wolfenstein 3D instead is beyond me.
