Has any one else out there seen this incredible film? And for that matter, is anyonle else puzzled as to why most bad-movie-review website havent acknowledged the existence of this film?
I just ordered this on DVD, actully it was the MST3k DVD.
Pretty much anyone who calls themselves a b-movie fan has seen this at one point or another. To be honest, I've never seen the un-MST3K version and quite frankly, I don't want to.
Anyway, the reason this one hasn't been reviewed yet is Andrew was waiting for the dvd release. The MST3K version was just released on dvd, but sadly (and inexplicably) they didn't but the regular version in the other side of the disc.
I've seen the MSTed film. Boy howdy, is it bad. The director was a manure salesman, coincidentally.
Guess he took that line about "Don't quit yer day job" to heart.
You ever see "Pod People"? That was amazing. Especially the sequence with the Simon Says and the music. Definately a favorite mst for me
I love "MANOS" The Hands of Fate. The first time I saw it, I saw the original version that Hal Warren intended, untouched by robot hands. I saw the MiSTed version later the same day. MST3K changes the film's atmosphere and leaves out a good scene where the Master beats a defiant wife, who points out that he's losing control. It's a fairly short film with fun music, so it's a lot easier to sit through than reports of it had led me to believe. (Some people claim that "MANOS" knocks Plan 9 From Outer Space out of the running for Worst Film of All Time, because Plan 9 is perversely enjoyable, while "MANOS" is pure pain. This is as false as the claim that Plan 9 is the worst movie ever made.) The funny thing is, most people who comment on "MANOS" have never seen the proper version of it. I thank Best Brains for helping to bring "MANOS" to my attention, but it's kind of sad that hardly anyone can discuss it without quoting Joel & the bots.
Ooooh, yeah, yer majisty. Remember when they did" Beginning of the end", where they gassed the locast, when they put on the gas masks, Tom said "Trumpy!". Man, i hope they get ahold of some of the old shows....but with copyright laws and that crap. (Sigh)....oh well.....
I saw MANOS on tape something like 15 years ago, when writing video reviews for a defunct filmzine, and while I don't remember much, it irks me to hear that the new DVD only contains the MSTed version. Whenever I see those stupid-ass sillhouettes on the screen I wish for a shooting gallery so I can just pick 'em off, then watch the movie by itself and make my OWN wisecracks if I'm so inclined...
Kevin, I feel the same way.
Lee, THANK YOU!!! Good to know I'm not alone in this. :-)
I'm going to go ahead and review this from VHS sometime this year.
Would buying the rights to the un-MST'd film, for inclusion on the DVD, been all that expensive? Wake up Rhino!
Andrew
Hummm....well, while i understand your point, i can't say i'd like it without Joel and the bots, as the atmosphear does not come across through the riffing. For me, i can see how some films would be harder to riff on, if they have better production values, for one. "Dungons and Dragons" has great effects and set design and the like....but boy, oh boy, does that put the acting into sharp relief...comedy relief! The DVD had deleated scenes that might have helped the story, but the over all feeling left, is of a pearl in swineflop. Looks good, but boy does it need cleaning! In MST3K, the humor does the cleaning. "Lemons into lemonade", so to speak. Its cool you like the Un-"Botted" version, but for a lot of us, the humor is all that may make it bearable. I like GORGO as is, but i also love the riffing. I can only bring myself to watch Godzilla Vs. the Sea monster, and G Vs. Megalon, with Joel and the bots. Thats me, but maby some others feel the same way. I guess it may just be a question of what ever works for ya. If ya' feel irrastably compelled to riff....there might be something wrong with this picture!
