Title: OT: Another Computer Game Related Death
Post by: dean on December 09, 2005, 07:10:30 AM
Another Computer Game Related Death as a 38 year old man in Korea died in an internet cafe in Incheon , South Korea, after 10 days straight gaming without a proper rest.

First games are making people violent, now they are killing them...

WHEN WILL THE MADNESS END!!!!! (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,17517556-2,00.html)

Computer game related death seems to be on the rise, and as such should be declared a dangerous substance and banned.

Everybody, we must pitch in and stop the killing!  We need to protect our children and friends from dropping like flies after playing such dangerous games as Mario Kart 64 and Nintendogs.  God knows, looking after a pet dog is hard enough, but when your pet is digital it seems to be downright hazardous...

On a serious note, I have to wonder about the staff at this internet cafe: Shouldn't they have noticed a man gaming for over a week straight and as such done something?  This seems to actually be becoming a problem.  Sure it doesn't happen often, but just imagine; if people are dying, even at a slow rate of one every 6 months, that still means there's a hell of alot more people out there who are either pushing themselves to the limit, or at least spending a heap of time [and money] on gaming at the risk of their own health.

Now I love gaming, but even I think that extended games like that without food or rest is just plain crazy!

Anyway, I just read it and thought I should bring it up.

I'm a HUGE gamer, and I have no idea how some of these people do it.  If I game more than 5 hours straight or so, then I have to stop.  I just get exhausted playing so long without a pause.

Anyone notice that most of these deaths are happening in Asia?  The reason is that pro gamers are regarded as national heros over there.  They make millions each year just by beating someone at StarCraft, a Korean favorite.  So, people see that and decide they will become pro gamers and they go on these crazy gaming sprees and then die.

It's like an endurance match: Whoever lasts the longest in an internet cafe without going to the bathroom, eating or blinking wins heaps of money.

That whole gaming culture as national hero is just crazy, but in a sense, pretty cool.  Every teen who gets crap from his family about playing games would love to just throw that back in their faces by winning a million dollars playing Starcraft or whatnot.

But that still doesn't excuse the whole 'personal health' matter when it comes to this.  Killing yourself over a game is just insane.

There was an old Farside cartoon where a kid was playing video games, and the parents were dreaming of help wanted ads for gamers, at high salaries.
Kinda scary when Farside becomes reality.  I think from now on I'm going to be nicer to cows.

Those who lack self control shall die of their own absurd methods, and make more room for those of us who don't. I stopped throwing away my life to video games a decade ago... maybe when I get too old to do anything but stare at a television, I'll pick it up again on a regualr basis.
