I was thinking of buying one of these recently. Does any one recommend buying these? I noticed at BestBuy they have ones with just DVDs and others with DVD & VHS. I kinda thought the DVD/VHS combo sounded better because I could convert all my old VHS onto DVD. Does any one here have any experience with these? I checked out the Amazon reviews and most of the reviews are pretty mixed so it's hard to say which brand is the best. Anyone with experience in this stuff would be very appreciated. Thanks
(also can you put videos on your pc onto disc with these? Or is that a totally different thing? Like a dvd burner)
Sinkwater,
I don't own a DVD Recorder but a lot of people I know, love them. It's a really good idea if you record a lot of TV, since you can use RW discs and just copy over the info when you are done.
As for burning video from your PC, I would recommend a DVD burner drive. I have one in my PC and it has saved me a crapload of money.
I agree with Skaboi, the burner is the way to go. Recorders are ok, but they are a bit of a pain it the ass. I have both, but use the burner more. If you want to convert VHS to DVD you can also do that through a PC with the right video card.
Get yourself a DVD recorder now!
If you record tons of stuff off TV everyday, then you need one ASAP!
I have the Sony RDR-GX300 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002KQR2I/qid=1134409108/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-5957973-3139253?n=507846&s=electronics&v=glance).
Let me tell you right now...I do not regret buying it!
It's awesome!
I use mine every single day.
It's super easy to set up and use.
The menus are also very easy to get the hang of.
I highly recommend getting one.
And only buy DVD+RW discs.
Anything else is a waste of time & money.
My father has been recording a lot of stuff from "On demand" onto DVD. I have only seen one example, but it came out really good. He seems to like it.
Glad this came up!
I don't have a PC, so a burner is out.
This has potential, as i can conver lots of old tapes to DvD.
Wish they had non PC capable CD recorders...drat!

Not quite sure what you are after, but here you go: Standalone CD burners (http://www.123dj.com/djtools/cdburners/)
I should point out that these are generally more expensive than a cheap computer, and CD burners for PC's are really inexpensive.
Google gives more options.
Ouch!
Oh, well, thanks for the link....hummmm...
Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I have a question for those of you who have a stand alone DVD Recorder, and not a burner, ala ASH:
Is it true that you can't copy purchased VHS tapes to DVD because they are copy protected? I have a ton of old VHS tapes I've purchased and was interested in putting them on DVD. Then I found out some of the VHS tapes have this thing called Macrovision that prevents you from copying them to DVDs via a DVD Recorder. Anyone know if that's true?
Thanks!

I don't have a burner.
I own an actual Sony DVD recorder.
I got a Panasonic one for Christmas. It seems to only be compatible with Panasonic brand DVD-Rs, -RWs, or -RAMs. It will play the Memorex brand DVD-Rs I burned on my computer but it won't record on them. Other than that, it's easy to use and has good recording quality.
