Well now, I've never really sat down to make a list of my favorite songs, or movies for that matter. I, like you, have my favorites according to my mood, what movie I've seen recently, etc. I do have songs I have always liked and are among my favories, and others I really like and can never remember the tiltle. Most of my listening is via the radio, so there is not a lot of alternative music in my favorites, and I doubt I could narrow it down to twenty.

Some of my favorites:

Kashmir and most any other song by Led Zeppilin (minus the Lemon Song)
#9 Dream by John Lennon (Imagine, Instant Karma, and So This is Christmas too)
Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
Last Child by Aerosmith (and I'll listen to most anything by them)
Foolin' by Def Leppard (uh-huh, most anything by them as well)
Don't Stop by No Doubt (and most nothing else by them)
How You Remind Me by Nickelback
Uninvited by Alanis Morisette
Sunglasses at Night by Corey Hart (why, I have no idea, but I really like the sound of it)
Shout by Tears for Fears
Voices Carry by Til Tuesday (is my list looking a little too 80s here?)

I'll leave it at that for now. I know there's a lot from the 70s I'm missing, but I can't think of them of the top of my head for now.

Man...I could talk music all day.  I too loved youtube when I had internet at home (I only have access at work atm; I'm a poor ass lately lol).  Anyway, I was loving myspace and youtube as far as watching Black Flag in the early years -all those shows I was too young to even think about seeing.  I watched the Misfits playing live in one clip when Glen was a young dude.

Anyway, much of my music taste is rather obscure or all over the board.
Some things to check out on either/or:

Katie Jane Garside/Queen Adreena - kickass brit band -great videos - refreshing for new music.  Formerly Daisy Chainsaw of the early 90s - proto grunge indeed

Siouxsie and the Banshees old school vids - Hong Kong Garden for example

See if you can find Alice Cooper's clip playing Public Animal #9 live from the School's Out album 1972

The Twinemen  - formerly part of Morphine - pretty damn good s**t w/rockin sax

Old School Type O Negative

The Sisters of Mercy

Lords of Acid videos or live concerts (not work safe!)

Anything by Ween is sure to be entertaining

Anything by Richard D. James aka as any of the following names:
*AFX, Polygon Window, Joyrex, Rephlex, Robbie the Robot, and most well known as Aphex Twin, among other names

Anything by Dr. Alex Patterson, or better known as The Orb

Sonic Youth - the older stuff is gem; the newer stuff is good too

Devo - non whip-it

Old Twisted Sister, Ratt, Crue, and Quiet Riot videos are always a treat

Anything related to Perry Farrel and Steven Perkins: Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros, but also gotta give some respect to Dave and Eric's Deconstruction experiment

Live performances from Rasputina for some evil cello action (my current avatar)

The Bauhaus, Dead Can Dance, Stina Nordanstam, Tori Amos

and of course, anything by Bjork, especially her vids.

clockworkcanary, do you post on Xltronic???

Seems natural, since you like Aphex that much!!!

For me, i mostly like stuff like

Electronic (AFX, Bogdan Raczynski, Autechre, Boards of Canada etc.)
Old soul/funk music (Solomon Bourke, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes etc.)
80'ies stuff (Kate Bush, Oingo Boingo, Depeche mode, Soft Cell etc.)
Alternative/lo-fi (Ariel Pink, Portastatic, Gary Wilson etc.)
Grime (Bruza, Lethal Bizzle, Dizzee Rascal, Crazy Titch, Kano, Shystie, Skepta, Jammer etc.)

I'm into metal mostly. Terrorizer, Impetigo, Immolation, Pestilence, Entombed, Carcass, Repulsion, Napalm Death, Macabre, Bathory, and Autopsy are some favs. I don't really have particular favorite songs, I'm more into the entire album of a band. I dig some punk like GG Allin too, that guy was a disgusting freak but his music is hilarious stuff.

Don Caballero is my fav band though, they're like instrumental prog rock, very catchy stuff, you could probably find some clips on youtube. Jaga Jazzist is another fav band, they're like experimental jazz rock.

80's hair metal!
I've got Dokken's Dream Warriors from the Nightmare On Elm Street 3 soundtrack playing on my Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/ashthecat3).
Old Black 'N Blue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_N_Blue) and Bulletboys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletboys) are what's in my CD and MP3 players right now.
As for newer music, I've been listening to a lot of Papa Roach.  I think those guys totally kick ass!

Listening to all of that old stuff brings me back to my early high school days in the late 80's when I was a 16-17 year old metalhead with a mullet who wore black Anthrax, Ozzy or Iron Maiden t-shirts under a cool jean jacket with those square-shaped band pins on the front and a big Metallica iron-on patch on the back.
Ahhh...Those were the days!

Nope, never posted there.  I mainly stick to bad movie sites or Agnostic-related forums.  But yeah...always dug Aphex Twin.  I have some Muziq and Autechre tracks too but nothing beats Richard.

And how could I forget Kate Bush - she's awesome too.

Title: Re: What Music do you find groovy, dig?
Post by: clockworkcanary on January 10, 2007, 03:35:00 PM
I think I went through a phase of liking most types of music (well...never country and only a minscule amount of rap/hip hop).  It's kinda cool how I went through different phases and never dropped anything really.

When I was a mullet rocker in stonewash jeans back in jr. high, I was all about Crue and the related, that is, until I discovered Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeath, Danzig, and Slayer.  I was all about the metal during the late 80s.  Then I went through a period of a lot of punk...er 80s punk anyway: Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Bad Brains, More Beer, D.R.I., Crucifux, etc.,

About the time I was getting a little burnt on it all and Metallica totally p**sed me off with their mellowed out "Justice" album (Cliff, rest your soul buddy) I found something else.  One day, in 10th grade or so, I discovered something that altered my world.  It was like, 88 or 89ish and I was about burnt out on headbanger's ball s**t.  I was hangin with my friend and his older sister was driving us somewhere.  Normally she played stuff I didn't like at the time, stuff like the Cure, but this particular day it was "Nothing Shocking" from Jane's Addiction.  I was forever changed.

I began to expand into all sorts of crazy stuff from there.  It was right before "Alternative" was coined, when it was just the rack of cassettes in the music store with stuff that didn't fit anywhere else.  I started getting into Primus, early NIN, Sonic Youth, the Sundays, Nirvanna, and Siouxsie.

Then I went to college and my music just got weirder.  Pixies, Belly, Breeders, Rage Against the Machine (first ablum), Smashing Pumpkins (first ablum only), Juliana Hatfield, etc.  I still liked some hardcore though but I balanced it all out better.

Then I went through a techno phase, as I was hitting the clubs weekly, getting trashed and dancing between two women on several ocassions, which would have never happened if I was still thrashing to Metallica :)

A little later, I discovered Bjork and then Tori Amos.  The deal was sealed when I went to a Tori concert not really knowing what to expect.  Suffice to say I went back another 9 times (met her as well).

Then I started exploring electronica a bit more than the repeatative beats at the club: intellidance and ambience, which is how I discovered Aphex Twin.

Oh, and how I almost forgot Ween, whom I discovered during my college party years.  Let me tell you - if you don't know about Ween you should check them out.  They lampoon every genre and even make up a few of their own.  Their first album, God Ween Satan, is the best, with songs ranging from punk, metal, to prince-like, to Kansas, to some jazz, to a church choir song, to a song that sounds like two drunk hillbillies talking about a 'coon dog lol.

I'm forgetting to mention a few other styles I got into for awhile: Doors, Floyd, Sabbath, and Zepplin of course.  And also a little time spent with some Goth here and there.  And I've always been an Alice Cooper fan since about 7th grade.

So yeah, it's been a strange trip from listening to only speed metal in the earlier days to now being all about classical, jazz, industrial, evil classical, and ambience.

Oh oh before I forget, I gotta plug for an online radio station I was into before I dropped my internet - used to listen to it every day ...somafm.com, check it out.  Also check out weenradio.com for constant live ween :)

Ditto. Right now my iPod's top played songs include stuff from Grave Digger, Chris Cornell, The Killers, The Psychedelic Furs, Janet Jackson and Beethoven (I love Moonlight Sonata - it's got to be one of my all time favorite pieces of music).

I also dig punk and horror punk...in fact, one of my favorite cd's is called HALLOWEEN HOOTENANNY,put out by Zombie A GO Go records.Great sh!t!

My musical taste tends to be all over the place. I often find myself liking the old 1950s Rock 'n' Roll in 1950s Sci-Fi/Horror Drive-In Films from AIP (music I often see condemned by others). I actually love Arch Hall Jr.'s ditties, especially in WILD GUITAR. The more classic Punk rock I find, the more I like but then I also like some stuff from P.M. Dawn, Run DMC and Public Enemy. I have music in my collection from the Cars, Twisted Sister, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Rush and Leonard Cohen. Also tend to like bands who sing about the fantasy, sci-fi and horror genres.  My Top 10 bands currently (this could change anytime) :

1) The Clash
2) The Ramones
3) Blue Oyster Cult
4) The Misfits
5) Midnight Oil
6) The Grapes of Wrath
7) R.E.M.
8) The Skydiggers
9) Joy Division
10) Rage Against the Machine

(I will interject that I also enjoy a lot of what's already posted here)
Frank Zappa
Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention
Project Object (A Zappa "tribute" band)
Captain Beefheart
Tom Waits
Brian Eno (Nobody on THIS board named ENO yet?!?! Yer slippin' . . .)
Jean-Luc Ponty
King Crimson
Robert Fripp
. . . as I type this, I am listening to the "Bastards" disc from Tom Waits' "new" CD "Brawlers, Bawlers, and Bastards".  You should too . . .

Brian Eno (Nobody on THIS board named ENO yet?!?! Yer slippin' . . .)

You are right... I love him!

Tom Waits is not even worth discussing. It's so good, it just stands out for itself, as a monolith of greatness.

Frank Zappa. My mother was a huge fan of him, and had loads of LP's that she played to me as a child. I imagine that why i am who i am today.

I can't narrow down a list of 20 favorite songs, but I'll just list some artists I like.

Charles Ives -- Ives' Fourth Symphony is mind blowing.  The rest of his work is also amazing.
The Beach Boys -- Their happy surfing music is great, but I love their later stuff like Holland, Sunflower, and Surf's Up.
Bruce Cockburn
Peter Gabriel
Radiohead -- The first band I ever went through an obsession with.  That worship has subsided but I still love them.
The Flaming Lips -- Their best: Hit to Death in the Future Head, Clouds Taste Metallic, The Soft Bulletin
The Residents -- Anyone else a fan?  I love God in Three Persons and EskimoCommercial Album is essential, too.  I haven't heard their new album yet.
Brian Eno
The Beatles
Gentle Giant
XTC
Boredoms
Dan Fogelberg
Chameleons
The Church
Boards of Canada
Squarepusher
Miles Davis
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Olivier Messiaen
Yes
Supergrass
Soundgarden -- Mainly Superunkown which remains a favorite album.
Popol Vuh

There's plenty of other stuff that I enjoy, but that gives you an idea.

I'm not too much into "heavy" music, but I enjoy Mastodon and Neurosis from time to time.

Yep, I also have that Halloween Hootenanny disc.  I've wondered the exact same thing about how Rock n Roll would have evolved without Beatlemania.  My theory is that punk and psychobilly are showing us the answer to that question.

Right now my tastes have become way screwy. I started getting into noise rock and electronic noise rock a few months ago and what I have been lietening to as of late has not what I have been listening to all my life. Really bizarre stuff concocted in the basements of tech geeks and fanatics in the surrounding areas. I'll listen to pretty much anything if it's loud enough. Here's a non-definitive list

Fatboy Slim (right now actually)
Lightning Bolt
Machine Drum
Mixel Pixel
Yip Yip
MC Chris
OdAm fEI mUd
Extreme Animals
804noise Richmond Experimental & Noise Collective
Robo Sapien
The Frogs
Anima
No Doctors
Beck
White Mice
Forcefield
Of Montreal
Mothguts
Mindflayer
NormRex
Paw Pawz
Blossoming Noise
DJ Jazzy Jesxx
Air
Wesley Willis
Wildman Fischer
Cake
Brian Eno
Kraftwerk
Ween (some Ween)
Talking Heads
DJ Shadow
Devo
Television
Squarepusher
Tom Waits
Sigur Ros
Primus
Portishead
Moby
Jurassic 5
Jamiroquai
Gold Frapp
Gorillaz
The Faint
Daft Punk
The Books
Smashing Pumpkins

It seems to me that I'll listen to anything as long as I have trouble understanding the words and it is loud. Me and lyrics are not good buddies. Me and music are good buddies.

Okay, Pilgerman named Charles Ives(!!) --
Now, that's the sort of thing I've come to expect here -- more like it . . .
White Mice!!  Now I know I'm in the right place!!
* * *
So, some more people I like --
10cc
Godley and Creme (People tend to ignore 10cc and Godley and Creme.  To them I ask, "Have you ever heard the 'L' albumn?)
THE BONZO DADA DOO-DAH DOG BAND!!
(Here's a trivia question:  What band, other than the Beatles, appeared in and played music in a Beatles movie?  Answer:  The Bonzos!  And the song was "Death Cab for Cutie", and , yes, that's where that band gets their name.)
* * *
I'm shocked that anyone would name Wild Man Fischer for anything --
I have an autographed copy of "Hello, My Name is Larry" -- And, no, you cannot have it.
I also am probably the only man in America to have a complete collection of Die Arschgebviden/Jorg Dilman -- (My best friend lives in Rossdorf, and sends me these)

Peter,

Can I have it? I like Wildman Fischer because he reminds me of what I always wished I was, and that is genuine. I have to admit I haven't always been true to myself and to others, but it seems to me that ol' Fischer was just himself and nothing else. When he was sad, it was because he felt sad about something in his life. And if he felt good, it was because something happened to him that made him feel that way. I like that and I try to be as authentic as possible because Wildman Fischer was authentic. This article changed my perspective of him.

I mostly listen to stuff from the '80s, I graduated from high school in '82, and I will forever love that music.  Hair metal, new wave, heavy metal, hard rock, pop, you name it.  I also like some classic stuff, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Nazareth, April Wine, etc.  I like some J.S. Van Halen
Pat Benatar
Ozzy Osbourne
Kim Wilde
Chicago
Aldo Nova
Cinderella
Loverboy
Great White
White Lion
Whitesnake
Def Leppard
REO Speedwagon

i got a huge record collection!  Virtually every big rock band is in my collection.  My favorites would be Grunge or 80s metal(you have to love Megadeth).

you can just view my music playlist, i have a wide variety in taste. I used to be a punk then in high school heavy metal - but i guess i got so burned out on all that music that i can't even hardly listen to metallica or even classic stuff like zeppelin anymore. But i still like some old punk (like the smiths)

Also the MUMMIES!!!! Here's a clip of the Mummies doing "You Got to Fight to Live on the Planet of the Apes"! Amazing.

So that's who does this song! Great driving song!

I have it on one of my mix tapes of stuff from Little Steven's radio show. Think it's mixed in with some Groucho Marx sound clips and a salute to Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips - "Get off the turntables Mabel! You're too old to be goin' 'round with musicians!" Just proves that radio DJs now really really suck compared to people like that.

The Mummies bill themselves as "The Only Band You Can Wipe Your A$$ With"!  :bouncegiggle:

I've been looking into "krautrock" recently and I really like Amon Düül II and Can.  I think Popol Vuh are lumped into this category sometimes and I really love them.  Neu! are pretty cool, too.  Anyone know of any other good early 70's German rock groups?

Try checking out DAF. Might be something for you.

For a modern weird german experience, try out Welle:Erdball. Both are very excellent german bands. Try searching for some clips on youtube.

Dearest Scottie --
Only just now got around to reading the entirety of the Wild Man Fischer experience -- Much wow . . .
Did you ever get the autographed VHS in North Carolina?  Have heard nothing further --
No, sorry,  though I may die in my sleep, my autographed "Hello, My Name is Larry" goes to my niece or nephew; Whoever proves themselves the most nonsane --
much love

Off the top of my head, Faust. Old Tangerine Dream.

I want to suggest bands like Nektar, Gong, and Van DeGraaf Generator, but I don't think they are German, just lumped into the same prog/fusion/avant garde genre.

...5.Caught in a Trap-ELVIS!!!!
Your song is "Suspicious Minds."

...#9 Dream by John Lennon (Imagine, Instant Karma, and So This is Christmas too)
And your song is "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)".

...Shout by Tears for Fears
Voices Carry by Til Tuesday (is my list looking a little too 80s here?)
Yes it is looking a little "80s", but who gives a ratzass?  I really like these songs, too.

Welcome to the club.I Find myself listening to more 50's R+R more and more.I always wonder how American Rock and Roll would have evlved if the British Invasion had not elapsed good old 50's-early 60's music...
What the British Invasion did was really revive interest in true Rock n' Roll and Blues, many 50s classics were covered by THE BEATLES, THE ANIMALS and THE STONES... great acts like CHUCK BERRY, BUDDY HOLLY and ROY ORBISON were an inspiration to the Brits.

Nobody named these bands or groups or people, so I guess I will:
...Frank Zappa... King Crimson...
ZAPPA and KING CRIMSON were both mentioned by Torgo.

Yep, I also have that Halloween Hootenanny disc.  I've wondered the exact same thing about how Rock n Roll would have evolved without Beatlemania.  My theory is that punk and psychobilly are showing us the answer to that question.
Not true!  The PUNK movement was largely instigated by a love for the old 2 minute 45rpm... A lot of the PUNKS and Proto-PUNKS were inspired by early Brit invasion records, and the American record response.  THE RAMONES were even inspired to get their name from PAUL McCARTNEY... if that's not a tribute to the British Invasion, I don't know what is!

Just found this old thread and enjoyed reading everybody's comments (but not so much the long lists...)

clockworkcanary, do you post on Xltronic???

Seems natural, since you like Aphex that much!!!

Nope, never posted there.  I mainly stick to bad movie sites or Agnostic-related forums.  But yeah...always dug Aphex Twin.  I have some Muziq and Autechre tracks too but nothing beats Richard.

And how could I forget Kate Bush - she's awesome too.

Ahhhh......Kate Bush.  How I love thee!

For mellow groove out music, her CDs, Hounds of Love (which is her best), Senusal World and the new one Aerial.
