Title: The Philosophy of POPEYE
Post by: RCMerchant on March 08, 2007, 06:01:03 PM
OK,...now bear me out here....cus I been pondering this all day....
I think Popeye is one of the greatest philosophers of all time...and here's why-
He's a basically happy go lucky ,live and let live kinda guy. Even Brutus(aka Blutto),who is constantly stabbing Popeye in the back and trying to mess with his women,is forgiven in the next cartoon -"Hey,Pal !". But when the sh!t hits the fan,and his freinds are in trouble,he's ready to kick ass.
And his motto,"I yam what I yam,and that's what I yam!", is a good way to be at peace with yourself.
    (plus he eats his greens.)
OK!!! Here's what I brought up all this babbling nonsense up for- what cartoon charecter has an outlook on life that you admire?
 I

Haha!!! Brilliant. I really do love him. The whole depressed/apathy thing really connects with me. Hehe.

I picked him for his calm attitude in any situation but still got the job done. I liked when he said,"You know what? That makes me mad."  He said it very slowly and calmly.  :bouncegiggle:

You watched Airborne (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106233/) didn't you RC?

I liked Droopy because he could teleport himself.

No,never even heard of it.But I will have to. I guess I'm not the only one who thinks Popeye is cool! :thumbup:Great(?) minds think alike!

The reason I mentioned Airborne is because there's a scene in it with Seth Green & Shane McDermott and Seth's character is getting ready for a date.
He's not really popular and/or the best looking guy in his class and he's nervous about the date and how to act.
McDermott's character tells him about Popeye and how he admires his "I yam what I yam" attitude and advises Seth's character to be like that on the date.

It's actually a pretty good movie.

I've always been more of a Wile E. Coyote kind of guy: too smart for my own good, constantly overplanning things that end up backfiring on me to the advantage of some stupid long-legged chicken  :tongueout:, etc. However, I guess the good part of the Wile E. Coyote philosophy is that he never gives up or gets too discouraged, and that is something I take to heart: I plod along no matter what and keep going however discouraging things may get.

For the record, I've always thought of Popeye as a very Zen character, just for his self-acceptance and ability to be at peace with himself.

Fritz the Cat

Two reasons ...

1. I'm always accused of being after one of two thing. (Sex or Money ... not 100% true, but accused nonetheless.)
2. I must have 9 lives because I know I've used at least 4 or 5 of them so far.

Sponge Bob
57% friendliness
You are the classic person that everyone loves. You are the best friend that anyone could ever have and never want to lose. You never cause harm to anyone and they would never not understand your feelings. Life is a journey, it's funny and calm for the most part. Stay away from traitors and jealous people, then you will be stress free.

Snoopy

You are fun, you are very cool and popular. You always know what's in and You never are out of style. You are good at knowing how to satisfy everyone else. You have probably disappeared for a few days more than once but you always come home with the family values that you learned. Being married and having children are important to you, but only after you have had your share of fun times.

Scary close to true!! ooooohhhhhh...

Well personally I think I should have gotten a cool, laid back, good-looking cartoon character myself as that seems more like me (Pink Panther perhaps?).

I'm with you, RC, Popeye is a Yoda figure I've always admired and there is a Zen quality to Popeye, rather like a diamond in the rough. If you notice he looks out for his friends, doesn't start fights but finishes them, he's hard-working, honest, his served his country in WWII in two oceans, and yet he lives each day with a humble positive outlook that holds no illusions about ego: I yam what I yam. He's a master of life.

Shame about those tumors in his arms though:
