Just about anybody's cover of music by The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan or Jimmy Hendrix.

With the exception of Devo. Rather than trying to capture/recreate the energy & style of the original, they're able to completely deconstruct a song into something that sounds completely their own, without making the song sound mutilated.

Disturbed's covers of Tears for Fears' Shout and Genesis' Land of Confusion

I think I'll have to recant on Devo.
This afternoon, someone reminded me about their cover of Head Like a Hole.
Too close to the original, & just not Devo-ey enough.

"Fell in Love with a Boy" by Joss Stone.  I'm a huge White Stripes fan and I HATE this cover.  Not only did they change the lyrics and the name of the song but they also turned a great punk rock tune into a hippie-dippy pop song.

However, the Richard Cheese version is funny.

I was none too happy with Orgy cloning New Order's Blue Monday. It really aggravates me when a band gets popular (i.e. makes a lot of money) from digging up an old song and carbon copying it. Especially when it's a band with a cult following because people like us are supposed to give the said offenders credit for knowing who they were (well, are in this case). It's the same thing with Alien Ant Farm. They get wicked big with a cover song. Their original material really sucked hard, too. I remember being at the Warped Tour one year, and I had just run into an old friend of mine. We were talking in front of the bike ramp (which was next to a B stage) and our conversation kept going back to, "Who the hell is that god-awful band over on that stage?" Sure enough, they went into the opening riff of Smooth Criminal. Dean and I peaked around the ramps and saw that moron with his stupid hair cut, and just laughed. I actually really like what Amy Winehouse does. See doesn't exactly covers songs, but puts her own twist on her favorites. Call it a guilty pleasure.

I'm one of the oddballs who actually enjoys a number of cover songs (Johnny Cash doing "Hurt" and Guns 'n' Roses covering "Sympathy for the Devil" especially), but I think the one that's bothered me most in recent memory was that f*ck awful cover Fred "Limp D!ckburger" Durst did for "Behind Blue Eyes" for the equally worthless movie Gothika. I thought someone had started sodomizing my ears with cotton swabs, only to realize that I was the one doing it to myself in an attempt to never ever have to hear this monstrocity again. :hatred:

What really annoys me is he keeps repeating the chorus of the song and doesn't go into the other bit.

Okay, after radio station KUNT and that, I gotta give you karma!    :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:
Y'know?  I remember Shatner doing that!

I remember William Shatner also did a hilarious cover of Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man, but i can't seem to find that on Youtube.

As for really bad covers...Celine Dion also did a crappy cover of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself".  She took what once had been a gentle, heartfelt song about loneliness, and turned it into a big, overblown, exposition-fest for her voice.

Then there's the most well-known offender...Whitney Houston.  She's been riding last 15 or so years of her so-called career on a simple cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You".    It was interesting to hear at first, but on repeated hearings, it gets old really quick.  What's worse is aside from the fact that a lot of people don't realize this is a cover song,  I'm convinced this song single-handedly contributed to the growing overuse of melisma in today's pop songs.  Just turn on American Idol, and you'll see what I mean.

"Imagine" by Avril Lavigne.

I didn't mind the Green Day cover of Lennon's "Working Class Hero" but, there's one song that shouldn't be covered, and it's Imagine.

Avril's okay with her little pop hits, but leave that song alone.

I hate to bring this thread back but I was watching the Tube the other day, and I saw this one video that blew my mind.  And it had me thinking back in like the early or mid-90's when this song came out.  Kiss, sung by Tom Jones.  No one should ever, ever, ever, ever do a Prince song EVER!!  In the video, the man (Jones) was doing the Iggy shuffle after the line "think I'm gonna dance".  THE IGGY SHUFFLE!!!!  Tom, let your sixty year old female fans keep throwing their girdles at you when you sing your songs.  YOU CAN'T SING PRINCE'S SONGS!!! :hatred:

I like TOM JONES' version of "Kiss..." recorded with ART OF NOISE if I recall correctly.  Sure, it's absurd and cheesy... guess that's why I liked it!   :teddyr:

Just about anybody's cover of music by The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan or Jimmy Hendrix.
How 'bout Jimi Hendryx's cover of Bob Dylan?   :teddyr: ("All Along The Watchtower.")  I also like RICK NELSON's cover of Dylan's "She Belongs To Me."

I will say DAVID BOWIE's version of "Across The Universe" (off of his Young Americans set) is terrible.

You gotta listen to Richard Cheese.  He does brilliant covers of songs.  Granted, they're played in a cheesy lounge singer act, but that's the whole point.  They're awful, but it's the character.  He actually allowed his version of Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness" to be in the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.

I'm a bit of a W.A.S.P. fan, and it was bad enough when I heard their versions of Mississippi Queen and The Real Me, but when I heard the travesty that they made of Paint it Black, that was just about the lowest.
Armored Saint's version of Saturday Night Special was pretty bad, but none, and I mean NONE can be worse than Shinedown's p|$$ poor attempt at Simple Man.

You should check out Weird Al Yankovic's "Bohemian Polka."  Essentially a remake of Bohemian Rhapsody, recorded around the time Freddie died.  Not a parody.  But, there's a lot of polka based music, with the accordian and whatnot.  Basically a tribute, in Al's 'weird' way.

Karma for you, man.  Anyone who openly admits to seeing him 4 times is fine by me.  One of the highest forms of flattery for Al I've seen actually came from Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.  He said in an interview one time that not only was he honored that Al wanted to parody him, but it "Made me feel I made it and accomplished something as a musician, to have Weird Al parody one of my songs."  I believe he even said something along the lines of Al was the closest thing to punk at the time.  That's Kurt's opinion though.

Here I go bumping old threads again.
Upon further review, I'd like to retract my earlier comment that nothing was worse than Shinedown covering Simple Man.
I lied.

Celtic Frost covering Wall Of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGpdtgeZbgk

I woudn't call this an "awful" cover, it basically sounds like another Celtic Frost original, but it was a strange choice indeed.

Also, Limp Bizkit's cover of Metallica's "Sanitarium" was pretty disgusting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2F5piurv-0

Actually, the majority of that MTV Icon Metallica show was rife with lousy bands doing awful Metallica covers. You know there's trouble when Avril Lavigne is covering a Metallica song.  :hatred:

LITTLE RICHARD had a record "Tutti Frutti" which had already been cleaned up for national release:

PAT BOONE covered it, and had a bigger hit than LITTLE RICHARD (peaking at #12 for a total 10 weeks on the chart versus LITTLE RICHARD's #17 for only 5).      :hatred:  Poor PAT, I'll say it again:  When PAT BOONE went out, he went way out.

Kittie doing "Da s**t You Can't f**k Wit."  Crappy song to begin with, but getting a nu metal band to cover it was a mistake.

Hole doing "Gold Dust Woman."

Six Feet Under doing "TNT."

I think either Staind or Limp Bizkit did a cover of Tool's "Sober," and I remember it sucking something fierce.

"Monster Mash" by The Misfits
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcOQduHEv08
Mind you, I LOVE the Misfits, but they put out a cover album of '50s/'60s songs, which, I don't mind.  I love that era.  But, well, a lot of people I know hate their version of this song.

'Comfortably Numb" by Scissor Sisters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNdsuZEQ3aQ
Well, the Pink Floyd classic, as a DISCO themed 2000's version.

"My Perogative" by Britney Spears
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihZmKEobaqI

"Too Cold" by Vanilla Ice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-LNT1r6GRA
I dunno if it counts as a 'cover' since technically, Vanilla Ice just re-recorded Ice Ice Baby as a Rock/Nu-Metal version back when bands like Korn and Disturbed were all the rage with their nu-metal schtick.  But I dunno.  Either way, I kinda prefer the rap version better.

A bizarre mid '90s cover of rapper Eazy E's classic.  Only done in a soft rock/punk style, but not really all that punk.  I like it, but it is quite awful.

This isn't the worst cover ever, it's the worst THING ever:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec2omS7OSjk

Someone mentioned Disturbed's cover of "Land of Confusion" and I have to second that; first time I heard it I was like, "congratulations, Disturbed, you managed to make Phil Collins sound like a total badass by comparison"
A few more that get under my skin:
Joss Stone - "Don't Fear the Reaper" (zzzzzzzzz)
The Ataris - "The Boys of Summer" (again, trying to make a pop song edgy making the original seem 1000 times edgier)
311 - "Love Song" (yes, THE CURE's "Love Song")
HIM - "Wicked Game" - not the worst cover ever, but easily the most unneccessary
Does anybody remember the Metallica tribute concert that ran on MTV some years back?  That was epic: Avril Lavigne covering "Fuel", Korn covering "One", Snoop Dogg covering "Sad But True" .... there are no words.
