Title: Da Ali G Show...
Post by: D-Man on November 11, 2007, 04:08:40 AM
Recently, I rented episodes of this HBO show, which gave Sacha Baron Cohen his stepping stone to Hollywood.

This show is of course where he premiered his character of Borat, and that's certainly the main reason to watch any episodes.  Borat's a much more effective character when you only see him once in a while, as opposed to putting him in an entire movie. Mind you, I didn't hate the Borat movie, it's certainly better than all those movies based on SNL characters (except Wayne's World) .  But it did drag in a few spots.

The only two things that bug me about "Da Ali G Show"...

- Too much focus on Ali G, Cohen's least amusing character, IMO.
- Cohen seems to like picking on Southerners a lot with all his characters, and that gets a little old after a while.  (There's just as much intolerance and homophobia here up North, Sacha  :teddyr:  )

When Ali G started out it was a UK show, "Da Ali G Show" but Ali G's face became so phenomenal and famous that he couldn't do any more interviews because everybody recognised him. Because of that he moved his show to the USA, called it "Da Ali G Show" there, but here under the name of "Ali G in da USAiii". I wonder if you guys have a chance to see the original UK show? In my opinion it's actually a bit funnier than the US one. Also, the pre-USA Ali G movie "Ali G in da house" is a scream.

I'm a big fan of Borat's Ali G Show.  I caught it when it originally aired on HBO and my chest would actually hurt after watching an episode, from so much laughing.  I never cared for the gay fashionista character but Ali G and Borat are classics.

I loved Ali's interviews with the various members of Bush's cabinet.  There was one with Rumsfeld that had me gasping for air.

Ali G In Da House was pretty good as well.  I caught it on one of the premium movie channels a while back.  Worth a rental at the very least.

Yup, the Ali G Show [UK version] was a classic.  I think it's because he usually got up the noses of Toffy English sorts, and that sat well with me.  :teddyr:

In the US it seemed like just 'more of the same' and making fun of Southern Americans seems like the comedic equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel, especially these days. [no offense intended by the by!]

Interesting fact: Seth Rogan star of Knocked Up etc wrote for Da Ali G Show, US version.

Indahouse is a great movie, which was lots of fun. The soundtrack is great too because it has Ali G 'MC-ing' utter nonsense between some of the tracks.

I don't like this guy, or more precisely I don't like "make everyday people look stupid" types of humor.  Though interestingly enough, my Aunt ran a cafe at Cambridge University and he was a regular there as a student.  She knows him well.

the interviews with politicians were great.  "pat boo-cannon" and "beatros beatros BEATROS galli".  BUchanan was on MSNBC and thye asked him about it.  he said after the interview he went to his wife and was like "i just did the craziest interview of my career"
