Title: Your First Record, Tape & CD
Post by: Mr. DS on January 15, 2009, 10:31:37 PM
Ah yes, in our world of upload and carry around a million songs on a tiny MP3 device, the kids of today will probably never know what it was like to lug around a walkman or a discman.  Even more challenging, sitting at home listening to your records.

Do you remember the first record/tape/CD you asked your mom to buy?  Either that or had to save up for working a summer job. Here is mine that I can recall owning for myself;

Record
I can't recall the exact name of it but it was a Sesame Street record you could exercise to starring Big Bird I think.  I remember bringing this to nursery school once and the teachers played it for the students.

Tape
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/26/BonJoviSlipperyWhenWetalbumcover.jpg)
I remember that everyone had this tape in 4th grade and I wanted it.  One kid offered to copy it for me but I wanted the liner notes and the whole shabang.  Somehow I ended up getting it as an Easter gift.

CD
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/78/AnthraxPersistenceOfTime_Improved.jpg)
I think I was in freshman year in high school when I asked for a CD player for Christmas.  I had just been over my friends house months before listening to this CD and asked for it with my CD player.

Side note, if you'd like to add in other forms of recording format feel free.  Just don't cry when we make fun of you due to your age.   :bouncegiggle:

Good thread. hopefully a lot of people will answer its always interesting to check out other peoples' entrances into the world of buying music IMO

First Tape: BEASTIE BOYS - 'License To Ill' - went in to buy Guns'n'Roses 'Appetite For Destruction' but they sold out and I bought this instead, purely based on the cover. still think it's a great album.

First CD: DINOSAUR JR - 'Green Mind' and HUSKER DU - 'Warehouse:Songs + Stories', got both on the same day after I got my first CD Player

First LP - cant remember...not because I'm too old to remember I just have no idea. It would have been after I bought my first Tape and CDs

I don't think I really had any tapes or records of my own when I was very young.  I'd mostly just listen to whatever my parents or brother were playing.  I especially remember loving Tears for Fears' song Shout (and I still do).

The first CDs I ever got were Christmas gifts:

Richard Marx - Paid Vacation
Elton John - Greatest Hits
Steve Taylor - Squint
+ some random Beach Boys compilation

I still have the Elton John CD, and I wish I'd kept the Steve Taylor album.

The first CD I ever bought with my own money was this:

First tape:      Nena (99 red baloons) - A present from my parents. Hated it immediately and never stopped.

First record:   Queen - A night at the opera - I still can live with that.

First CD:        ABC - The lexicon of love - A recommendation. Thanks a lot to bring that back to mind, I desperately tried to forget that. I went back home from the store, put it in a CD-player, thought WTF, returned to the store and bought a Jethro Tull CD. It seems that other people always failed miserably when guessing at my taste in music...

First record:  First single I remember specifically asking for was Shaun Cassidy.  Today I have no idea what the name of the single was.  I was into the "Hardy Boys" TV show at the time.  I really want to thank Jack for saying that he actually owned a Shaun Cassidy record first.  It makes it easier for me to come out of the closet.

Before I had my own record, though, I really liked listening to a country compilation of my dad's that had Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe" on it.  I still love that song.

First tape: The Beatles 1967-1970 (The Blue Album)

First CD: Dark Side of the Moon

(Not very original, I know).

I got so s**tface while standing in line I missed most of Exile...I drank some bong water-the 'water' in the bong was MD 20/20. I was 16... eh! whatta ya want?

'I Beg Your Pardon,I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" Lynn Anderson...from 1973.

And I still have it, along with everything he did before 1982 anything after Flush The Fashion was just ok with a few exception. The 70's were easily Coop's best years.

First cassette tape: Dangerous by Michael Jackson.  That I remember at least.  May have been Weird Al.

First album: Never had any.  But I did have a little record player with little 'single' type albums.  One song was Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Great White.

First CD: What the Hell Happened to Me? by Adam Sandler, and Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrisette.  Both bought on the same day.

First Concert: MC Hammer.  Back in about '90.  I'm pretty sure he had both Boyz II Men and TLC (maybe) with him.

My 1st concert was Duran Duran in 1984  (Hey, give me a break I was only 9 at the time.)   :teddyr:

Duran Duran is awesome, man.  I wouldn't be ashamed of that.  If you said Frankie Goes To Hollywood, that'd be bad.

Whaaat? Frankie was great grind music, the chick dug dancing to it (in the 80's) and we all know what dancing leads to ...

Matter of fact I just played the video and all the females here, if by magic started dancing.

First LP: 'American Woman' by the Guess Who.

First CD: Susan Aglukark's 'This Child'. (Or was it the kitschy compilation of 'space' themes? Or the Gregorian Chants?  Oh well: pick one.)

First concert: Beach Boys.

Ray Stevens is good.  If it's the one I'm thinking of, at least.  The one who did "The Streak" and "Ahab the Arab."  I like him.
