Title: The Misfits
Post by: voltron on April 16, 2009, 06:49:51 PM
I think these guys are the best American punk band ever. Their newer stuff sucks, but their earlier works kick serious ass. I was never a big Danig fan, but his voice is perfect for punk rock.

Anybody else like these guys?

While I disagree with your statement of them being the 'best' group ever, I do have a pretty big fondness for The Misfits.  I'd say the Misfits are high on my list though, coming in second to The Ramones.

I did like their 1997 album "American Psycho", but haven't listened to anything after that.  While I dislike Danzig's later works as both a solo musician and in the metal band, he was able to write some pretty damn good songs with the '77-'84 Misfits lineup.

The Misfits are awesome.  To me they are perhaps the greatest band ever, especially when I look at it from a B-movie perspective.  Then again there really can't be a definitive "greatest band ever."    They are certainly a groundbreaking band in the horror-punk sub-genre that many of my current favorite bands belong to, and I've played every single one of their songs to death.  I even like their "newer" stuff.  I haven't found myself listening to the Misfits very much over the past couple of years though.  They have unfortunately become stagnant and haven't put out anything new in quite some time.  Suffering the same fate as the great 50's doo wop bands that inspired them, they now seem content to just tour with one or two original members, playing the same old songs with no new ones to add.

They keep trying to put out new material.  Unfortunately, it seems to be that it may in fact be Jerry Only's 'ego' that gets the better of them, as most band members leave after a short while.  Hell, his own brother left the band because of it.  But, supposedly, this new lineup (circa about 2004 to now) seems to have a record deal in place.  And supposedly, they're writing new songs.  If the record hits stores and ITunes, I don't know.

When I was a skater and big into the harcore music scene back in the late 80's they were easily the most popular band even though they ahd long since broken up.  rare vinyl releases would sell for exorbident amounts.  I liked the piano version of "she"

I really liked their more aggresive hardcore type stuff like Earth AD as well though that has gotten shorter thrift critically

They were supposedly going into the studio in 2005 or 2006.  The new album was supposed to come out in 2007, then again in 2008.  Now they don't even bother mentioning it anymore, and I didn't hear a single new song the last time I saw them play, which was just a few months ago.  It seems to me a "record deal" would not be an issue since they have their own record label.

Hmm.  I'm thinking I meant to put they had a record label, but, eh.

But I've heard some news about a tour coming up.  They were in town a few months back with Motorhead, and I missed out, so I'm hoping it's true so I can see them.

Wish Graves would've stayed as singer when he joined.  He wasn't too bad, actually.  The album that's from, American Psycho, is pretty decent.  Then he left and they've had various singers over the years.

Love the Misfits. I've never really listened to alot of punk, barring 45 Grave, The Clash and Ramones, but the Misfits have always been a unique outfit. My favourite stuff is "Walk Among Us" and "Famous Monsters". I also wish Michale Graves had stayed with them, seeing as he was alot younger, had alot to offer with his distinctive vocal style. The Misfits have had a great look, great mascot and logos and fantastic music that was always full on angst and energy. It's a shame that in this country, they are complete unknowns given the fact that they are undisputed punk legends.

When I walk down the street, I see a lot of kids (mid to late teens), and people of various ethnicities wearing t-shirts with the Misfits Skull Logo, and wonder how many of them actually LISTEN to the music or know who they are, as opposed to wearing it cause it looks cool.  Seems like some stupid poser crap.

Loads of kids here are like that. You should see them all in the new Preston mall. They've probably only ever heard of them 'cause 'tallica covered "Last Caress" n' "Green Hell".

I did actually like Metallica's cover of "Die, Die My Darling."  I'm a punk fan, of sorts, and got into a discussion with my buddy.  I bought two Misfits albums at the mall, and his girlfriend was like, "They're good."  He starts saying that they're terrible.  Then I ask him to name one song, and he doesn't have an answer.  I go, "You can't say something's terrible if you don't know a song by them."  I did then point out that he likes "Die, Die My Darling."  I was like, "Misfits did it first.  AND BETTER."

But he's an ass anyway.  He hates the Misfits, but likes INSANE CLOWN POSSE.  No offense to those guys, but damn.  Pretty much the same thing, but one raps and one's punk.

Wow that singer is terrible, the music is good, but that guy sucks.
Unfortunatly I didn't get into the Misfits until recently. I know I missed out on a iconic band growing up, rather regret that. But I have listened to a lot of there stuff, mainly just the albums with Danzig on them. Never cared for any of the newer singers. They all tried to sound like Danzig but they do a terrible job at it, should just do there own style of singing.
This guy does a much better Danzig impression

I think Michale Graves is a good singer. In no way one of the best I've ever heard, but he brought something different to The Misfits, whilst fitting their style. I mean, he sounded nothing like Danzig IMO and it was '99 after all! Plus, he wrote "Dig Up Her Bones" when he was 16, so props to the dude:

That dude is pretty good.  Nowhere near as good as Danzig, but if you are able to find a copy of the '96 (I believe) album American Psycho by The Misfits (Hot Topic usually carries it), and listen, there's a bunch of decent songs on it.

Love the Misfits! I really think they're fantastic and I doubt I go through 3 days without listening to them. I do prefer the early Misfits with Danzig as lead singer but I've grown quite fond of Michael Graves stuff too...it does have a good fast energy about it. Plus almost all they ever sing about is B-movies!!!

Where as Glenn Danzig sounded like a Satanic Punk version of Jim Morrison, Micheal Graves had sort of an evil, creepy broadway voice, which was cool and went great with the music, both cats had real good range. I saw Gotham Road (Micheal Graves band) live in a club which used to be a strip-club, my friends band opened for them. He sounds just as great as he does on his recordings, had alot of energy and didn't tire out, it was a great show.

Karma for the Human Blood quote.  Great song.  I like Balzac too, but I don't think they are the best horror-punk band.  I used to think they were the best one besides the Misfits, but ever since they started releasing stuff on Misfits Records, it seems like every CD they put out sounds alike to the point where you really only need to own one of them.  I like their earlier releases from Japan much better.

I collect their stuff. They are actually putting out a new mini-album tomorrow, and it is waaay different than any of their other stuff, Barring Space Vampire in Silence Noise, as it is their new "Digital-Horrorpunk" sound. Should be good, if you like Mad Capsule Markets. It is being completely produced by one of their members.

The Misfits (or as some now call them, the Jerry Only 'N' Friends Band) will be releasing a new album in October... cool cover art, as always. I just hope it's better than that godawful "Project: 1950" disc of doo-wop songs they released last time out...

MISFITS To Release 'The Devil's Rain' In October - Aug. 13, 2011

Seminal horror-punk band the MISFITS will release its new album, "The Devil's Rain", in October.

The track listing for the CD is as follows:

01. The Devil's Rain
02. Vivid Red
03. Land Of The Dead (album version)
04. The Black Hole
05. Twilight of the Dead (album version)
06. Curse of the Mummy's Hand
07. Cold In Hell
08. Unexplained
09. Dark Shadows
10. Father
11. Jack The Ripper
12. Monkey's Paw
13. Where Do They Go?
14. Sleepwalking
15. Ghost Of Frankenstein
16. Death Ray

In 1977, at the dawn of the punk movement the MISFITS set out to make an impression, and created a legacy that has truly withstood the test of time. Immortalizing black and white B horror films in their music, the MISFITS developed a ghoulish and totally unique persona of their own that s consistently evolved over the years, while remaining true to its roots. The band s iconic "Fiend Skull" logo has become a staple in pop culture and an instantly recognizable symbol worldwide. Bands across the spectrum of rock have covered their material, including METALLICA, GUNS N' ROSES, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE and countless others.

Boasting a massive catalog of music old and new, a new lineup (consistently helmed by founding member Jerry Only), and an influence felt around the world, the MISFITS return with their long-awaited, first full-length release of all-new, original material in nearly a decade!

Rooted in the horror and sci-fi themes their audience craves, "The Devil's Rain" showcases 16 fiendish, soon-to-be MISFITS classics including "Twilight Of The Dead", "Dark Shadows", "Curse of the Mummy's Hand" and the title track itself. Produced by Ed Stasium (whose credits include the RAMONES' "Road To Ruin" and "Too Tough to Die", as well as the MISFITS 1999 release "Famous Monsters"), the album showcases a jaw-dropping, two-panel front/back cover painting featuring the rebirth of the band's iconic Fiend mascot in an epic setting rendered by Arthur Suydam (known for his immensely popular work on the Marvel Zombies series, among others). The packaging, designed to emulate a CD sized gatefold LP, also features some incredible new MISFITS portraits shot by the legendary Mick Rock. Rock's imagery (which includes David Bowie, Iggy Pop, QUEEN, Debbie Harry, and the RAMONES, to name a few), has become part of the very fabric of rock and roll. Having also served as an on-set photographer for cult-movie classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", Rock lends a perfectly suited eye to view the band s surrealistic and highly theatrical persona.

"The Devil's Rain" is not just a continuation of a historic legacy, it's a total reboot ushering in a new era of terror. In a sense, it's the debut album from the legendary MISFITS of this decade.

Anybody ever heard the "Fiend Club Lounge" CD? It's a Lounge Music tribute to the Misfits performed by a swing/jazz group called the Nutley Brass. Most definitely the weirdest CD in my collection.
