Just thought this might prove interesting...

From vocm.com,

"Lorraine Michael is calling on the premier (Danny Williams) to deal with the immediate crisis in the province's (Newfoundland and Labrador) healthcare system. The NDP Leader says it's going to take political will to reach an agreement with the doctors. She says the sticking issue is the "one-off" raise government keeps referring to, but she says it's time for government to get off their high-horse.

Michael says they have to recognize that a deal is needed for the good of the province. She says if it costs around $30,000,000 to do what has to be done to keep the doctors happy, then put it in as an equity investment in our healthcare system and the future of the province."

From vocm.com today:

"The President and CEO of Nalcor says electricity rates will increase with or without the Lower Churchill Project. Ed Martin was responding to former Premier Roger Grimes' allegations that electricity rates in the province are going to jump about 50% over the next six years to cover the cost of getting Lower Churchill power online. Martin told VOCM Open Line with Randy Simms the rate increases are needed to cover the cost of rebuilding and replacing the Holyrood oil-fired generating station. Martin says Holyrood's oil-fired generating station is close to 40 years old and needs to stay in operation for the next six or seven years. He says that, if the Lower Churchill Project doesn't go ahead, then there is going to be substantial infrastructure upgrades at the station to deal with emission issues. Martin says that, if the upgrades are needed, they will be in the $600-800 million range. He says without the Lower Churchill, increases in electricity costs are going to continue to happen."

What amazes me is that my province doesn't harness more of its natural wind and tide power? Given the amount of wind we have, I suspect it'd be enough to power the province for many years if fully harnessed...

Speaking of which...

from vocm.com-

"The President of Windspot Canada says the Premier had an opportunity five years ago to establish a 600 megawatt windfarm at the Trepassey Barrens that would have allowed the closure of the Holyrood Oil Generating Station. Gerry Skinner says his company's plan would have cost the government nothing, had no financial risk and could have been up and running by 2012, but he says Danny Williams is only interested in the oil business. Skinner says Newfoundland has the ability to generate hydro power at a lesser cost and without running transmission lines under the ocean. He says that, had Williams been reasonable and spoken to the people of Quebec in a professional manner, they could have reached a deal."
