Title: Worst Band/Album Names
Post by: Psycho Circus on July 11, 2011, 04:01:34 PM
I was listening to an album the other day by an 80s rock band called Snatch. They had an EP in 1985 called (I kid you not), "If The Party's In Your Mouth...We're Comin'" and I was just thinking about stupid band names and really bad titles for records. The ones that immediately sprung to mind were early 90s grunge bands; Dracula Milk Toast and Cat Butt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LdgoSuS2OM
Cat Butt's album was called "Journey To The Centre Of Cat Butt".  :bouncegiggle:

Can anyone think of any others?

This isn't going to make it past the censoring software, but:

Anal C**t

From Wikipedia: "The name Anal C**t came from Seth Putnam's attempt 'to get the most offensive, stupid, dumb, etc. name possible'."

I would say they succeeded in that goal.

I don't know anything about the band, I gather they were an attempt to be deliberately awful and offensive, and yet they produced music for two decades until the singer's recent death. I don't own any of their music. The only reason I know about it is because a guy came into the library wearing a t-shirt with the band's name.

I'd heard the name years ago, gave them a listen about a week ago...Terrible. 1-2min long songs with jaw-droppingly offensive lyrics and every song sounds exactly the same. Probably the worst band I've ever heard.

Ruby Slippers. A hair band from L.A., one of those dime a dozen hair bands from the mid to late 80's. I never saw them, I just remember seeing ads for their shows, which they marketed heavily, and seeing their super quaffed hair band regalia. I didn't need to see them to know what that show would be like. Not that I hate all hair bands, some were okay, but Ruby Slippers (just the name alone makes me shudder) just epitomized the worst hair bands, the guys that just removed all the grit from rock and roll.

These kids in my high school had a worst band name contest. My memory is a little hazy about why or how they came up with the winner but it was Farm Farm.

Amazing! I have no idea what they sound like, I just could never get past the ultra quaffed regalia to give them a chance.

Wow. That picture accompanying the song is even more androgeny-filled than what I remember from their show ads. That's a lot of women's clothing going on. Not that I'm judging. And a cover of These Boots Are Made For Walking. Priceless.

Limp Bizkit is one of the worst of all time, partly because they made it so big with such a stupid name.

There was also a band in the 80's called The The. Pretty bad.

Linkin Park is also very stupid. I read somewhere that the reason for the spelling was not simply a matter of retarded pseudo-cleverness, but because the domain name lincolnpark.com was taken. That takes it to ever greater depths of bad.

Wham! sounds like an 9-year-old girl marketed the band.

Anal C**t

That was absolutely the first one that came to mind for me too.

They've been around so long that I almost forgot how much I hated the name "U2" when the band first came out.

Karma for the first person who can tell me who I'm quoting here:  "That's the letter 'U' and the numeral '2'...  This is bulls**t!  These guys are from England and who gives a s**t!  Names that don't mean diddly-s**t..."

I think that was Casey Kasem.

Mott the Hoople always struck me as not coming off too well as band names go.

Sorry to take it off topic a bit, but I've always been intrigued by "take a worm for a walk week." Did that originate with The Karate Kid when the Cobra Kai kid said "must be 'take a worm for a walk' week?" Or did it originate somewhere else. I've always wondered. That line was very confusing when I was watching the movie in high school.

Toad the Wet Sprocket is a pretty good example of the "college rock"-genre of bad band names that was popular in the early '90s. Looking it up, the based it off a bad band name Eric Idle came up with for Monty Python as an example of worst band name. So, is it now bad or is it good? The answer is it is still bad.

Slash Puppet is particularly unfortunate when you consider the modern usage of "slash" in the internet era.

When I was an assistant manager at a Guitar Center, I worked with a guy that was always talking about his band. His band kind of sucked, but hey, I don't tell people that unless they really corner me on it. Anyway, this guy would always tell people his band's name, which was Lady Elaine. Then he would talk about how the name came from the Mr. Rogers show and the character Lady Elaine from the land of make-believe, and he always seemed so proud of the name.

Sure there are far worse band names than Lady Elaine, but this guy was so starved for validation that he would go on and on about it like he wanted people to say "Wow, man, that's such a cool name for a band." Freaking annoying.

After enough of him talking about his damned crappy band and constantly playing me his demo and talking about his cool band name I just one day had enough and told him his band name and his music were both stupid. I don't like to do things like that, but the guy just wouldn't shut up about it. Of course his response to this was "Oh, you don't know good music, so f**k you." I said "if that means you're going to stop hounding me about it then yes, you're right."

There's a famous French novelist named Balzac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honor%C3%A9_de_Balzac).   English speakers have been making fun of his name for years.

HOMER: "Name one famous person who ever lived without air conditioning!"

MARGE: "Balzac."

HOMER: "No need for potty mouth, Marge."

It's not a bad band name but can someone tell me the reasoning behind calling your band "Queen"? What's the story with that?

They were originally called Smile. Freddie Mercury came up with the name for the band, saying: "Years ago I thought up the name 'Queen'. It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid … It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one face of it."

I just heard of a local band, supposedly on its way 'up'.  Three young guys, fresh out of high school.  The name is The Breaking Wind. I cannot decide if that is as bad as I first thought it was.  Maybe just 'iffy'?
