They came to Savannah several months to protest ???. They stood around in front of a few churchs downtown while scores of police officers earning some good overtime surrounded them protecting them from the glances of a few mildly curious tourists and locals out walking their dogs.

People should watch Louis Theroux's documentary episode on them, fascinating stuff.  This sort of thing doesn't really surprise me when I hear it after watching that.

The things they say are unbelievably hurtful. They spread their hate for their own country and hide behind the first amendment. Bastards, all of them. I wish the most painful deaths upon them.

It would be really sweet to get a posse together and give those freaks a good old fashioned ass kickin'... on live TV.

The best revenge against them is to ignore them.  Nothing else will hurt them as much as being considered quaint and irrelevant.

Several local groups tried to organize huge counter protests and make a media circus out of it - but it was a lovely Sunday morning in early spring so nobody was terribly interested.

I admit out of morbid curiosity I went downtown that morning to get a load of of the infamous protesters and their goofy signs. The police far outnumbered any protesters or counter protesters. The officers were not particularly on edge: they were for the most part standing around and talking and laughing with the few passersby. The biggest crowd was the kiddies wanting to pet the police horses.

I think the response they got (other than a few odd glances from tourists and locals what amounted to a collective shrug) was far more effective than any big counter protest (i.e. MEDIA ATTENTION), which is exactly what they want. According to the news they actually shut down their protest a few hours early because of the lack of interest.  :smile:

Ignoring them does nothing. They protest endlessly, fueled by their faith and their hate. They protest in the name of God all mighty. The fires of religious intolerance burn eternal.

As Raffine posted above, paying little attention to them caused them to cancel their attempted protest early.  They want you to counterprotest and pay attention to them.   I'm not sure why people are so easily goaded into giving them the only thing they're seeking---attention.

There's a theory floating around that the Westboro people are actually scam artists. The theory is that the church has no political or religious point of view, they are simply using inflammatory rhetoric to bait somebody into violating their rights, at which point they sue for profit.

I haven't seen any hard proof for this view, but it's interesting, and makes the Westboro church even more unredeemable.

What a bunch of jerks! They are an insult to what they claim to stand for.

As a Christian, I find them to be an absolute abomination.  John's first letter is very clear: "He that loveth not knoweth not God, for God is love."

There is no love in these people.  The fires of hell await them.
