Title: Music groups you 'discovered'.....
Post by: Trevor on December 20, 2012, 01:24:32 AM
..... and then found out you'd known of them and enjoyed their music for years?

I think Badmovies.org Brother Dean would like this: for me, it is the Australian group The Seekers ~ songs like Georgy Girl, The Carnival Is Over, Morningtown Ride and A World Of Our Own were part of my early childhood and are amongst the first songs I remember hearing.

Thank you, Judith, Athol, Bruce and Keith.

Great choice.
Each of these for me, over many years and I was too young for all of them, sort of:
RICKY NELSON
ROXY MUSIC
THE BEATLES
BOBBIE GENTRY
DUSTY SPRINGFIELD

Each is a different story, but you have great timing TREVOR.  Did I mention GLORIA LYNNE

Growing up in New Jersey, I remember hearing the Smithereens for the first time around 1985 when they cameout with a song called Blood And Roses that was a big hit and also in a movie called Dangerously Close (if I remember right).

Anyhow, here's a clip of a song of theirs from 1991 called Top of The Pops that raised hell on the local charts. Enjoy!  :cheers:RF-ezZ1wPOw

It must be serendipity as I was browsing my music collection as I read this and noticed the Seekers were there somewhere.  I think I stole the album off my grandparents though I'm personally on the fence really.

My friend recommended an album to me about a year ago and I loved what I heard, found a copy only to realise that I had it already and just never noticed it [I have about 200gb of music so its a bit insane.]

Could've been listening to them alot longer if I just noticed it was there!

Todd Rundgren....until I met Alan I'd never actually heard of him. But then I realized that he had several songs I liked. How about that?

You know his big hits...    He was always weird but who knew 'til you saw him?  :teddyr:  It takes an avid fan to listen to a lot of his other recordings (or a kookoo bird, like me).

Oh,I definitely know that one. I've listened to some of his other music and he really has some odd stuff. I like to annoy Alan with "Bang On the Drum"(I think that's the title) because he hates that one and I love it. :teddyr:

Another genre I hold dear is the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) from the mid-1970's to the early 80's.

So, with a very special thanks to a dear but long-since-departed British classmate of mine in my high school days, another great British band I discovered was Tank.  Here's a clip of this absolutely great band from Birmingham, England back in 1981.

Right on, man!  I did some research and found out that original bassist\frontman Algy Ward had to step down from the music biz in 2010 due to some ongoing health issues.

From what I was able to get from some online sources, he suffered a brain tumor or something?  he now lives with his brother Laine in Kent, England.

Tank is now a 5-man outfit and the only original member is the drummer (same one in this video) and the new singer once sang for Yngwie Malmsteen.

No matter the case, Algy Ward will always be the man for TANK.
