In the first teaser for Carnival Row, the new drama from Legendary and Amazon (originally created by Guillermo del Toro), an oppressed minority must navigate a world that doesn’t want to let them be the people they were meant to. Or rather, the creatures they were meant to be. Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne stand on opposite sides of a fantasy world circa our Victorian era, wherein mythological beings live alongside—though rarely in harmony with—their human counterparts. It’s a story that feels like Sherlock Holmes and Romeo and Juliet crossed paths with a fairy tale.

A fantasy world in Victorian England that combines a love story and a murder mystery? This isn’t in our wheelhouse, this is our wheelhouse.

While this first look doesn’t provide much in the way of plot, Amazon did provide a full synopsis of what we can expect, in a story of love, intolerance, hope, and murder.

    “Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Delevingne (Suicide Squad) star in Carnival Row, a series set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. This growing population struggles to coexist with humans — forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Bloom), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society. Vignette harbors a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row.

Also starring in the series is David Gyasi of Interstellar as Agreus, “a mysteriously wealthy faun who moves into an affluent human neighborhood in defiance of the social order,” Karla Crome as Tourmaline, “a quick-witted faerie poet driven from her war-torn homeland,” Game of Thrones‘ Indira Varma as Piety Breakspear, “the regal and cunning matriarch of the powerful family that rules the city of The Burgue,” and Salem‘s Tamzin Merchant as Imogen Spurnrose, “a young woman who sees in Agreus an opportunity to turn her aristocratic family’s fading fortunes around.”

Carnival Row premieres on Amazong Prime on August 30, 2019.
