Title: One Season TV series
Post by: WingedSerpent on September 25, 2019, 07:23:28 PM
I liked a show called Forever which aired back in 2014.  It was a fantasy crime drama, where the hook was the main character Henry, was actually an immortal.  He didn't age and any time he was killed, he would appear perfectly healthy in a near by body of water.  It had likeable characters, an interesting mythos that it was setting up.  Only lasted one season mostly due to poor ratings.
 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JmVnyJ16d4#)

Limitless was a sequel series to the movie of the same name.  The main character Brain starts using the brain enhancing drug to help the NYPD solve crimes.  Again suffered from slipping ratings, but I think another reason might have played into its cancellation.  Bradly Copper who reprised his role from the movie was becoming a bigger star at the time.  The show clearly had a storyline for him and wanted him for a reoccurring role but he probably wasn't interested in going to TV when movies where in his future.
 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdcLM9xYa70#)

Surface  jumping on the  Lost bandwagon was this show that was the closet I think the US has gotten to a tokusatsu kaiju-themed show.  Strange giant creatures which look like a cross between an otter and an alligator begin showing up around the globe causing problems.  There's mystery as to their origins,  whose behind everything, etc. I watched it.  Started off strong, really dragged in the middle, and ended on kind of a non ending.  Not exactly a cliffhanger, but it was clear more stories could have been told in that universe.
 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxNhqoE-nI4#)

Finally, I'll mention Apollo Gaunthlet.  form the Adult Swim block.
I'll let the video show you it because it does a much better job of explaining the series.
 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcASMb_w0do#)

So what are shows you liked that only lasted a single season?

THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES.  I just about lost faith in humanity when it was canceled after one brilliant season!

Malcolm Mcdowell's fantasy island.

Nightmare cafe. A series about people  between life and death having their  fates resolved in the titular eating establishment. Starred Robert Englund.

Space rangers. Decent network scifi show.

Starcops. British hard,  realistic sci-fi  series.

Caprica. Prequel to the rebooted battlestar galactica.

Gary the rat. Animated series about a lawyer so utterly  subhuman he is transformed  into an anthropomorphic rat. Kelsey Gramer voiced him.

Minoriteam. A big animated middle finger to political correctness.

I agree with Surface. Got it on DVD and was hoping for a second season.

Firefly. Best written sci-fi series I have ever seen.

I remember KEEN EDDIE, which was about a cop from New York which gets transfered to London. It was an extremely funny and charming show, obviously bound to dissapear.
The other I remember is JOHN DOE. It was about a guy who couldn't remember who he was, but knew everything else, like a living Wikipedia. Another amazingly smart mistery show. that kept you hooked all the time.

Both shows got cancelled without conclusions. But hey, now we have Nets**t! Hooray!

.PLANET OF THE APES (1974-75)
.WEREWOLF (1987-88)
.HELLO, LARRY (1979-1980) with McLean Stevenson. I don't even know why I recall this. It was bad.

I liked Hindsight on VH1, which is about a woman from 2015 who is about to get married and she suddenly finds herself in her own past, as herself, in 1995, reliving everything. It ended with a perfect setup for a second season that never happened.

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (1993-1994), a weird western starring Bruce Campbell in the title role. Also had John Astin aka Gomez Addams as a wacky mad scientist.

My first thought when I saw this thread was The River (2012) about a news crew & some researchers who go up the Amazon. Pretty much every episode had that "jump the shark" feel to it. I mean EVERY episode!

Stark Raving Mad (1999-2000) an amusing sitcom about the quirky relationship between a horror novelist & his uptight editor.

PBS has had quite a few over years prior to the internet & YouTube, mostly dealing with short films, or avant garde art that stepped outside the comfort zone of most PBS viewers...
But they also tried their hand at a few original sitcoms....
Trying Times (1987) With a different all star cast in every episode, it would open with the aftermath of a huge disaster, then return to the beginning with quirky people trying to deal with life, a curveball, then build up to how the disaster was the resolution to everyone's problems.....
The Steven Banks Show (1991) (1994-) Shot from one room, a messy guy who still has all of his childhood toys & still plays with them doing one man shows, and his relationships with his eccentric neighbors.

* MY BIG FAT GREEK LIFE (2003) - Lasted only 7 episodes. I watched episode #1 and couldn't believe how bad it was. I like the movie, though.

* BEYOND WESTWORLD (1980) - Couldn't survive beyond 5 episodes.

* FREEBIE AND THE BEAN (1980 - 81) - The movie is one of my guilty pleasures. I don't think I ever saw the TV series.

* SERPICO (1976 - 77) - David Birney wasn't no Al Pacino . . .

* SHAFT (1973 - 74) - Blaxploitation comes to television . . . for 7 episodes, anyway.

* GET CHRISTIE LOVE! (1974 - 75) - Blaxploitation comes to television . . . for 23 episodes, anyway.

* STRUCK BY LIGHTNING (1979) - Jack Elam as Frankenstein's monster in a sit-com! For 5 episodes, anyway.

Technically Special Unit 2 ran for two seasons. But at nineteen episodes, it feels like a one season wonder. If you're not familiar, it centers around a semi-clandestine section of the Chicago PD that deals with monsters (presented as preternatural entities) causing trouble in the city. A running gag is that, while the characters are willing to accept the existence of just about any type of monster, vampires are considered to be ridiculous.

Not big on this show but I respected it for using a Joan Jett song for the theme.

Here's an interesting one.  Wasn't one I liked, but the story about it is fascinating.

Father of the Pride
 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f7nFAsgcJc#)

An animated show from DreamWorks -the studio who made the Shrek movies.  Its about the life of the big cats Sigfred and Roy used in their magic show.

This show was doomed from the start.

First off, it was one of the most expensive half hour shows produced at the time, at over 2 million dollars per episode.   Secondly, the writing was terrible.  Too many people still think you can skimp on that when it comes to animated shows.

Then came the biggest hit against the show.  Just before it aired, Roy Horn was attacked by one of the tigers they used in their shows.

The universe itself was trying to stop this show.

I remember that one. It wasn't bad, but it simply wasn't funny. Like, at all. So it was like watching a s**tty sitcom but with animated lions. The result was a powerful sense of stupidity from my part, kinda like "why the f**k I'm watching this s**t?".

Check out this obscure TV show from 1969: The New People[/i]]=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_PeopleThe New People (http://=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_People[i).

Quote
The New People is a 1969 American television series on ABC that focused on a group of young college students who were returning from a trip in Southeast Asia when their plane crashed on an island in the south Pacific Ocean. The crash killed several of the college students, and all but one of the adults, who was badly injured and later died. The surviving students were the only human life remaining on the island. The island was unusual in that it had been built up as a site for a potential above-ground nuclear test which never took place, leaving all of the buildings and (improbably) supplies untouched and ready for use by the survivors.[1]

After Sabrina, the Teenage Witch was a success, ABC approved a couple other fantasy sitcoms, one of which was You Wish. watched it regularly, but it didn't last.

Clerks the animated series was hilarious, but it only got one season.
Actually it didn't even get that.  Two episodes (out of six) were aired before they pulled the plug.

My favorite one season show will always be The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (already mentioned). It's sad and unfortunate it didn't take off. It was paired with the X-Files and on a network that genre shows could be successful. Also Bruce Campbell's greatest role.

Another fav that was treated cruelly was God, The Devil and Bob. While the show featured religion in a humorous light it was hardly mean spirited and had good morals.

A lot of kids shows, even popular ones, only get one season. Speed Racer comes stop mind, as does The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. They create enough episodes for syndication, then stop, & spend a few years syndicating the shows to make a profit. (I guess...)

It's a reboot, no relation to the Fox show except that they're based on the same IP. I liked them both, along with the animated series.

At least the live-action version managed to get two seasons, although I'd have happily watched more.
