I need to find someone who wants to sell me a set of 1st to 3rd edition Skaven for Blood Bowl for a price that doesn't involve the national debt of a central American country.

What to watch tonight? The new Charlies Angels movie or 80's relic Airwolf?

EDIT: Settled on the new Terminator movie. I like bad movies, I am just not sure I am ready for another Elizabeth Banks level bad film. Someone ought to let her know that it isn't just men avoiding her female led action movie...

I wish my 91-year-old invalid mother in law would not wait till I am six bites into my supper before announcing she needs to go to the bathroom.
Nothing ruins a meal like having to deal with another person's s***.

I been watching Dracula on Netflix, and I got to thinking, if I was a powerful vampire stuck on a ship full of people in the middle of the ocean, I'd turn a few passing sharks into vampires, then throw people overboard to see what a vampire shark feeding would look like. I bet that would be really, realllly interesting.

i have had too much dark chocolate it's making me paranoid and i keep thinking deep red thoughts like what if gary busey played buddy holly so well because he actually is buddy holly and he acts crazy because of a head injury from that plane crash and i think it's creepy that drinking tea is drinking plant blood so maybe we're vampires and I think it's so eerie the cia is in suburban virginia of all places and why do dogs love bad people and i think how odd it was programmers used to get us to watch hours of commercials on afternoon tv in the '80s because that's all kids' tv was half-hour toy commercials pretending to be real actual series and then they'd be interrupted by more commercials so we were literally watching constant commercials and how they did that to us made my generation's DNA damaged and i was thinking crying is a truly strange thing and it weirds me out that the cia is in virginia and why does leopard urine smell like popcorn and does it hurt to get pop rocks in your eye plus  i was also wondering what if kevin spacey is murdering his enemies and how if sasha sagan says 'my dad taught me' one more time in this book i am going to stop reading it and i wonder if bees have a concept similar to politeness and would my foot arouse a fetishist and does popeye have girls in every port and would i be able to shoot one of my children to save the other two if some psycho said i had to or he was going to throw all three off a tall building and when i die and go to heaven is the first person i look up there going to slam his door in my face and is the air inside a mall really dirty and why is science fiction so bad these days and does my seven year old really have a boyfriend and why is the cia is in virginia and why does music make us dance and why does singing make english people sound american and i'm also deeply suspicious that ee cummings is trying to possess me

I did read a book re entry that put it down to subsonic noises generated by the unusual shape of the nearby mountain. Such noises can cause feelings of intense fear in the listener, even though they are not consciously aware of the sounds. I have no idea if those noises can be generated artificially or not, but it was an interesting read about an unsolved mystery.

I wonder if the Catholic church does anti-porn magazines with titles like Repenthouse?

Almost that bad, though it's usually not from the church itself. There is a Catholic company called TAN that infamously puts out both prose tracts and little pocket-sized graphic novels with lurid cautionary tales that sometimes have names that are puns. Usually the tales progress through an A, B, C plot. Virtuous person is shown enjoying the fruits of a good life, then temptation arises and is yielded to and terrible things result. They're...... kinda fun to read.

My eleven-year-old is staying with my cousin and the mother of his child these last days before the baby is born, and the expectant one is having slight Braxton-Hicks contractions, and I said to my daughter, "Kylie will be okay, she's having a boy for her first child, and for whatever reason boys are just easier to have."

My Viking ancestors believed that laughing at danger brought good luck, as it was literally a form of prayer to taunt life's hazards.

I been giving that a try by chortling and telling the pandemic it is a weakling, fit only to lie carnally with its own grandmother while warriors who will still stride proudly when it is but a joke in memory belittle its feeble efforts, worthy only of culling the soft ones from the herd.

So far so good.

The ongoing politicization of this crisis by both sides is truly depressing.

It shows how sadly divided our country is that even amid our universal need to overcome a mindless, indiscriminate, dangerous virus we cannot unite, that in the midst of a disaster we somehow find ways to more deeply polarize ourselves while we contract still further into divisive rhetoric and tribal identities. Depressing is a mild word for it.

Of course, the nutjobs that follow "QAnon" are saying that the whole virus thing is simply code language for all the indictments and arrests taking place as Trump brings down the Satanic cult that is running America, and that the virus doesn't exist at all.

Lord spare us.

Is the Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act a good thing or a bad thing?

Or does it depend on what state you live in?

Heard a rumor, as you cam probably guess...........

I don't know much about it. Rumors? Like, what? I really don't know.

Rumor, well more like somebody reposted a very blurry photo Facebook of a sign in a window that I had to ask him what it was.
He told me parts of it said the president was enacting The Stafford Act.

It's a good thing. It frees up emergency funding and resources from the Federal government to the states.

Well, could be. Usually it shows movies that are looked up the most at the moment commonly new releases or due to current happenings like Contagion (2011) or Outbreak (1995) are listed higher than usual for obvious reason.
There are plenty of adult european movies but that Tinto Brass one has been showing up for months. A DVD was released in 2003 followed by a blu-ray in 2013 so technically its not a new release. The original title is Così fan tutte which is the same name as Mozart's opera. Maybe there's a connection there, or maybe it is for the ass f**king after all lol.

You know, looking back to college I was a straight, white, blond, thin PE minor from the reddest part of red state among left-wing east coast lesbians from the bluest parts of a blue state taking the PE classes with me. Do you think I was right in sensing something sinister in them trying to talk me into playing full-contact jungle ball with them after they taped up their hands and downed energy drinks and traded punches with one another while screaming, "We killas, muthafuggerz!"?

I kinda do.

So, you've been to school
For a year or two
And you know you've seen it all
In daddy's car
Thinking you'll go far
Back east your type don't crawl

Playing ethnicky jazz
To parade your snazz
On your five-grand stereo
Braggin' that you know
How the n****rs feel cold
And the slum's got so much soul

It's time to taste what you most fear
Right Guard will not help you here
Brace yourself, my dear
Brace yourself, my dear

It's a holiday in Cambodia
It's tough, kid, but it's life
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Don't forget to pack a wife

You're a star-belly snitch
You suck like a leech
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss ass while you b***h
So you can get rich
While your boss gets richer off you

Well, you'll work harder
With a gun in your back
For a bowl of rice a day
Slave for soldiers
Till you starve
Then your head is skewered on a stake

Now you can go where the people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
What you need, my son...
What you need, my son...

Is a holiday in Cambodia
Where people are dressed in black
A holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll kiss ass or crack

Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot

It's a holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll do what you're told
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Where the slums got so much soul
Pol Pot

cerb, that's the trumplicans, not people with a  working brain.

No, I think I know what Cerb is talking about.
My take on the song is that it is Jello is mocking rich liberal kids who think they know it all about being poor by just observing it, not by actually having been in that situation. So Jello says- "Go live in Vietnam, brat, if you want to know what it's all about!"
Of course Jello mocked everything in his songs, from MTV to Reagan, to then Gov. Jerry Brown, to skinheads.
But I don't think it's just liberals, or "libtards" as Cerb likes to say, but all political know it all's who claim to be a ' man of the people'. Trump claims to be for poor working class white folks, but has he ever worked one day in his life? No- he's a rich Daddy's boy who's swindling the poor blue collar white folks he says he represents.
The thing with folks like Jello and me and Cerb are that we like to b***h about politics on both sides of the spectrum, but don't really have any answers or solutions on fixing it.
Trump wanted to be President just for the prestige and power, despite not knowing WTF he is doing or gives a flying f**k about anyone. Trump needs a 'Holiday in Cambodia'.

I think Africa has too many countries. I bet I could compassionately condense it into about ten zones and then like put up walls to discourage ethnic cleansing. Think about it, ten nations in Africa and a million miles of walls. Why did European colonizers in the 1800s and 1900s make something so simple so hard? Duh. Follow the rivers and hills and game trails.

I wonder if I could build so many walls the Chinese would be jealous? They get a BIG wall but I get lots and lots of little walls for more area.

Thing of it is, the walls would not only be free, they'd pay for themselves through billboards and corporate sponsorship.

"Next fifty feet of wall courtesy of Viper's Vape Shop of Venice Beach!"

"Next fifty miles of wall courtesy of Nike!"

(From each according to his abilities, see?)

The advantage would be to US schoolkids who were taking tests that asked them to fill in the names of the African countries, when there are so many now, what fifth grader can do that? (Hint, mine had to do that today with an open-book online test and it was a headache.)

I'm trying to make things easier before my next kid has to take that test. Oh, but also improving the lives of Africans, I swear! Fewer nations, more walls, less ethnic violence? Win-win-win!

I may even hold lotteries to name the new nations. Buy a ticket, name the new intra-Congo region after your dog, it's cool by me.

Now what can I do for Australia? I think it wastes too much space. Maybe condense it somehow? Shrink it?

Yes, that'll work.

sort of. in kansas we call them" the toot cellar", lol! but seriously, yes, i have, and been in it too. my old neighbor at the old house had one in his backyard that his dad built in the late 40's, and it had a tunnel in the wall that connected to the basement of my house, a former coal cellar. the tunnel was cemented closed, but don took us down there and showed it to us and gave us a door key to use it a tornado shelter.
thankfully that never happened, it was a CREEPY place, very cold.. and i'm claustrophobic. i couldn't stay in there more than 5 minutes. curtis used it as a"shout" room when we still had the studio.

That's pretty heavy, man. Hope you find a way to deal with those feelings. I was clinically depressed years ago. Now, ten years later, I'm somehow happier and more satisfied with life than I was since my 20s. Some of it was medication, although I quit that years ago; some of it was learning to accept my failings and accept that everyone else had similar weaknesses and struggles, and to forgive them for their small wrongs and annoyances. Much of it was learning to appreciate truly good booze. And strippers.

Without the second three, one has no goals, & without goals, hope isn't always present.

Some Canadians I play games with online shared a link about using a 3D printer to make masks.  I showed it to my wife who got excited so we ordered a 3D printer.  They aren't nearly as expensive as I thought!  Now I've got a new toy, to play with!  For the record, we have printed 2 mask bases but not the part to put the filter material in.  My wife has found other more important  things to print.  Toothpaste tube squeezers, chip clips, a cutter for the soap she makes.  Oh well, eventually I'll get to make myself some toys.

Now, this isn't about the quality of the movies, the guy who posted this is all about wordplay. I googled "Logan Lucky" and all I got was Steven Soderbergh's acclaimed movie Logan Lucky (2017). Is there a meaning behind 'Logan Lucky' or is this just a brainfart of a bored mind

Facebook has taken down a picture of Joe Biden with Tara Reade, claiming it's "partially false" because Joe Biden claims he doesn't remember Tara Reade, even though it already said that ON the picture...

So, does that mean the information was, in fact, NOT "partially false", or does it mean that the fact checkers were wasting their time in telling everyone what it already said on the picture?

Guess what, you were always told wrong. While they aren't 100% on what country it started in, there is however no doubt which country was responsible for spreading it across the world. Conspiracy theorists claim that it was called the Spanish Flu to avoid the US taking the blame for spreading it, others say it was because Spain was the first country to accurately report on the casualties suffered from it, but it does seem to have spread from American military bases starting in Kansas.

I've been thinking that China should bear responsibility for paying the world wide costs of dealing with this virus, but if they were to then should any country that a disease first appears in then have to bear financial responsibility for the consequences. Given that the Kansas Flu killed around 50 million people compared to the (currently) slightly over 250,000 deaths Covid-19 has caused, I think that is a heavy financial burden that someone should bear. I mean if you are going to blame countries for these outbreaks then lets take this to its logical conclusion. Once we have sorted that one out we can start on claims over the Black Death.

After all, where there is blame, there is a claim and in this case, we have a clear blame.

now come on guys, yes, kansas is an awesome state, even if most of the legislature is RED, but we AREN'T a country on our own, nor do we wish to be. we leave that stupidity to the reds in texas, lol! ( no offense to my texan friends)
but yeah, most of my very military family believes that it did start on the bases here, and our boys spread it to the rest of the world. i'm gonna believe them first, our granddads and uncles and cousins were there then. and our family was hit hard, both here in kansas and in missouri, but not as bad as other states were. farmers are naturals at social distancing.
seriously, cerb, why do you believe any of those idiots? left or right, extremists are just that, and THEY are the ones who encourage what should be considered terrorism, with armed protests just because they want a friggin haircut and are too stupid to protect their own, much less anyone else.

Y' ever wonder how many people chose the blue pill over the red one?

Y' ever wonder what would happen if y' tried to take both?

Y' ever wonder what would happen if y' did take neither one of 'em?
That y' either bought into th' notion you were going crazy, or y' thought this dude sittin' in front o' you had already slipped y' somethin' & he was trying to get y' hooked?
Or maybe y' just wanted to think about for a bit, or instead of deciding, y' really wanted t' sit back & see how this whole thing played out while everybody else did all the crazy stuff?

I just watched the MST3K version of SAMSON VS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN, which is the last one featuring Tv's Frank. It was a really nice farewell to the character, I wish they paid the same amount of attention to Joel's departure, which seemed bland and cold.

Cool movie by the way, the effects of the vampires burning were actually nicely done for such a cheap production, and the female vampires were absurdly hot.

Oh yeah-most important of all- dead people!

(https://i.imgur.com/owB3yBj.jpg) (https://lunapic.com)

When did the naming of generations start anyhow? Maybe the 60's? No, Because the 20's were called he Roaring 20's by the late 30's. And the Gay 90's. (no, it meant "carefree" back then)- which seems like a nostalgic term. The Wild West is also an old term. The X,Z,Alpha thing... I dunno. The title for this generation should be Generation Cellphone.
By the way- I'm a "Baby Boomer." Which is the kids of folks who fVcked and s**t us out in the late 40's- early 60's.
It all just seems so stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they are wearing masks and I'm all for wearing a mask. When I go shopping I don't stop, read and admire whatever little message or statement people have printed on their masks. Most people I know on Facebook wore masks right from the beginning, which is good. But after a few weeks they started to get experimental from being bored I guess. Now they just want to stand out from the rest, posing for selfies with their latest mask creation on a daily basis.
By the time this pandemic is over (if ever) I assume they'll have thousands of "witty" masks stored in the basement.

I just think it is weird that people always have to turn some things into a "thing" regardless the situation.

A bunch of PC snowflakes are tying to take the word "master out of everything because... Well, I'm not entirely sure why after thinking about it......

So, if we get rid of that word, how do we address or describe those who have achieved a certain level of accomplishment in education, gaming, athletics, etc.?

What's to become of chess masters?
Or master craftsmen?
What are you supposed to pursue if you can no longer get a masters degree?

And what about Kung Fu movies? How will students address their instructors?
Or Doctor Who's Archnemesis?

And Master Bating? There's absolutely nothing about it which is either dominant nor submissive, it's merely something one can only do to one's self!

To imagine that the word master could be removed from NewSpeak is maddeningly outlandish!

What if mutant super powers are real, but they require such specific situations that nobody realizes they have them?

A person from Nebraska could have the ability to mentally control one certain type of crab that's only found at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

Another person could be able to fly but it only works if they launch themselves off the third tallest tree in all of Poland.

Maybe someone gains the power to shape shift, but it only works on the first Tuesday of the year, and only between the times of 3:37 a.m to 3:48. a.m

Or they cold just go to the nearest hunting & fishing store & buy a rainsuit to have on hand............

All the ones I know avoid that problem by simply sticking a helmet on.

I don't know any bikers stupid enough to go riding in the rain without one. Hell, even Bally, who will take to the narrow winding country roads around here, doing wheelies and speeding wouldn't do that. A lot of his body is held together with pins from the accidents he has had. He's seen what most of his leg bones look like from them sticking outside of his skin and he still rides the same way, and he always insists on wearing a full face.

Maybe that's why he was told to leave the Beretta behind in the first movie...

I'll bet he still has that briefcase from the second movie, & still pulls it out & plays with it every now & then...

If I have learned only one thing from watching trump in power, it is this. If the bible is true and all the stuff in the book of Revelations comes true, when the antichrist rises, people will not only wear his mark on their forehead but will do so gladly, gleefully running to embrace it and shouting about how it is a good thing.

Funny though that the exact same people who would do this will scream, cry and stamp their feet in a full-on toddler type tantrum if asked to wear a mask.

Given that governments were quite late to the party in getting people to wear masks, wouldn't it make more sense as a conspiracy theory that those in power don't actually want you to wear them as it messes with facial recognition technology? They couldn't sit back and publically do nothing in the face of mounting scientific evidence and casualties, so reluctantly they brought in rules on wearing them, but also secretly started up an anti-mask campaign to encourage the public not to wear them so they can track us better.

Makes about as much sense as most of the conspiracy theories I hear these days.

It was nothing that you said that got it removed. Somebody else got fed up with the whole concept of how the 1st Amendment is supposed to work and handed in their ultimatum. Andrew obviously didn’t like where the topic was going and yanked the whole thing.

It was nothing that you said that got it removed. Somebody else got fed up with the whole concept of how the 1st Amendment is supposed to work and handed in their ultimatum. Andrew obviously didn’t like where the topic was going and yanked the whole thing.
Thanks.  That's odd.

I may have been a little too vague. Somebody else threatened to leave because they didn’t like the fact that there are two sides to every heated debate, so Andrew put the whole fire out.

Because before I left town earlier today to go on a country drive with my wife, so far as I could tell, I was the last person to post in that topic. When we came back earlier this evening, I saw that Andrew had moved the topic.

Except that I read the post that was right before mine in that topic. I know about the ultimatum that was handed down and who said it. You don’t. I only mentioned the drive because I wanted you to know that I had more important things to do today then live on this forum like you do. So not only am I partial to inside information that you don’t possess, but I also lead a happy life outside of this forum. Oh, and my wife also has darker skin than Tiana does too. Isn’t that ironic? Quote
Have you ever wondered why the widths of cars are standardized to the dimensions they are? Perhaps it is apocryphal, but the story goes something like this: Car widths are what they are because early car makers used wagon undercarriages as the basis for car bodies, and that's how wide wagons were. Why? Because the wheels were spaced in such a way that they would fit the ruts of European roads, and that's how far apart the ruts were. Why? Because many of the roads in Europe were built on top of Roman military roads that dated from the time of Julius Caesar, and that's how wide they were. Why? Because (and here, we finally get to the real answer), that's how wide a Roman chariot needed to be, in order to accommodate the width of the war horses pulling it. So, in some sense, the width of cars is not only an artifact of the way that things had always been, but is also an extension of the tyranny of Caesar. Remember that the next time you go pick up some groceries.

Chipotle open two restaurants in Germany in 2018. According to TripAdvisor reviews the staff doesn't speak German, which is unusual. Quality of the food has been declining in less than six months. Apparently they now use bagged chips instead of homemade, and some sort of pre-made meat, and they have reduced the bean option down to one and drastically reduced the overall portions. Never been there because they are too far away but this doesn't sound ecouraging.

Five Guys Germany doesn't seem to fare much better even though they are planning to expand throughout Germany in the next few years. People are complaining about the food being insanely overpriced and the burgers tasting average at best.

Beside the omni-present McDonalds and Burger King, KFC appears to be the strongest runner up amongst popular US fast food chains in Germany, with Subway and Dominos not too far behind. We used to have Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks but they closed shops in my area a few years ago.

I liked 5 Guys when we visited them in the states. They opened up in Glasgow and we went along. I have to agree about them being insanely overpriced and the food average. We could have had a full steak meal elsewhere for what they charged for a burger and a shared box of fries.

My religious mother in law said she'd be voting for trump based purely on the whole abortion thing and for no other reason.

Because I've seen this a lot and out of curiosity I went and looked up the number of abortions per year in the US at the moment. Then I noticed something about the years, so I then started comparing the number of abortions in the US per year, all the way back to about 1980 and compared it to who the president was at the time. Some interesting result there.

If I was Jewish I'd like to think I'd have been born in Australian in a brown house on a small street in the suburbs of Melbourne, to a mother who was allergic to cats and had a weight problem, and a father who cussed under his breath but never aloud, and who liked to throw things away.

I'd have had an older brother with a fixation on bathing, and a grandmother who lived with us and gave us lots of money.

One day as I was studying very hard for the right college, maybe age ten or so (because I'd be like so smart) I'd take a break and be walking my poodle in the park and come across a dead teenager hanging in the woods, and my parents would get me lots of counseling, but in fact I'd kind of like to tell lurid exaggerations about the body in the park.

I'd finish high school a year early and get into the second-best college on my list, and then I'd go bad because I'd fall in with this domineering lesbian who would screw my mind up about men while we smoked a lot of hashish. Finally, being three years older than me, she'd admit to me it was all a stage she was going through and she wasn't a lesbian and did not hate men, and she'd say sorry for being a bad influence, now don't go join a death cut in the Outback, will you not, Bec, honey?

I hated her after that and was only partly sad when seven years later she got crippled in a plane crash.

My last year at university would be a mix of anger and vulnerability, and I'd think I was pregnant for most of a semester, but would have no idea why I thought so, and finally I'd graduate with honors and get a job where I was making a whole lot of money, and then I'd move to Sydney and suddenly have this incredible life with awesome friends, and I'd be very happy til my brother visited one day and pointed out didn't you ever notice, Bec, that your friends are all like actor-slash types, and lay-about poets, and they're hanging out with you cuz you always pick up the tab when you're out for  drinks and noshing?

That's not true, Brad is also sleeping with me, so there, I'd shoot back, which would make my brother raise his eyebrows and say something apt but crude, and later I'd realize he'd been right, it was my money and generous nature my so-called friends took to, not me!

That was a painfully hard realization, so I quit hanging with my friends and went into therapy, took a vacation in southern India one year, Israel another, got involved with a man from Pakistan who'd always tell me his family could never find out he was dating a Jewish girl, and after some bad relationship choices I ended up living with this Welsh dude who had a daughter back in Cardiff he never saw but I'd always try to talk him into having her come visit.

Finally on my thirtieth birthday I would decide I had spent my whole life investing in other people's happiness, and I'd marry a man I met at group therapy, and one day I'd wake up and be fifty, and I'd silently scream inside because my G-d my life was mostly done and how had I been so wrapped up in marriage and my daughters that I was entering the homestretch of life, and dear Lord above, I needed to do something worthwhile, and quick!

So I'd quit my job and open a bookstore art gallery poetry coffee shop, and go broke but by the time I was sixty and discovered a lump in my breast I'd feel I did something worthwhile with my time, and wouldn't mind so much the cancer that I instinctively sensed was going to kill me.

But I'm not Jewish.

I think somebody on this forum brought this up before, but I was thinking, instead of remakes, the "Nightmare On Elm Street" series should have a series of prequels......

Maybe figure out made him crazy in life, maybe delve into his desire to drag his victims into his fantasy world...

There was some teasing at his origins in "The Dream Child", whereas "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" was way too in your face by depicting him as a psychotic youngster, exacerbated by abusive father, and the rather pretentious coping mechanism he develops as a teenager...

There should be at least one movie about the life & times that created the monster turned demon named Freddy Krueger!

I was talking to someone and walked right into a parked bus. So I had a run-in with a bus but also a borderline eating disorder, and a crazy mother, so does that make me more sympathetic to Tony or Cassie or Nips?

The wife & I watched President Bartlet debate Governor Ritchie, the debate at times was heated, but there were no interruptions and no one told any one else to shut up, also there was a lot more coverage of the what the presidential staff was doing behind the scenes at the debate. There was also a bit about a speech writer and a congressman who suffered a fatal heart attack during his re-election campaign. We found this to be more intelligent, informative, and entertaining than whatever else was on network TV.

Our house here in San Gabriel was built in 1932, when we moved in 35 years ago there was a problem with rats, our cats, Poogie & Doodle cleared that up in about 5 weeks or so.

I just found out that my phone can talk, it happened when I asked my daughter Kari whether she and Ryan (son in law) would prefer grilled chicken or pork chops and the phone lit up and said "I'm sorry, I didn't understand the question" I think that a phone that talks to you is a little bit creepy.

I just occurred to me (ADHD), that the agents & Smith from The Matrix are a lot like the makers from the episode OD Feelin from HBO's The Hitch Hiker series..........

Of course, this might not be the only case of men in suits & really dark sun glasses who speak very slowly & deliberately with big obsequious grins, it's just the only one I can think of right now.........

After spending five weeks at the hospital I was discharged yesterday, FINALLY. And I'll be on sick leave for at least five more months. My biggest complaint about staying at the hospital was not being able to get a single night of decent sleep because I need white noise to sleep plus the other patient in the room was constantly freezing even though it wasn't cold. He had the heater turned all the way up  :bluesad: I can't sleep with a heater on. My window is open almost every night when I sleep at home.

If anything, I found a new appreciation for less-is-more breakfast they served at the hospital. Coffee, kaiser roll with a bit of butter, jam and one or two slices of cheese is really all I need in the morning. Except now that I'm home again I can make me some porridge as well

I’d go with economics or finance over investing, but either way I think kids would need at least basic algebra to understand some of the concepts.

I was taught consumer math WAY too early...
By the time I'd gotten around to algebra, I'd forgotten it all, & then they kept trying to drill that into my head year after year with no reasonable explanation why anybody would need to know it......

Once I wandered the Land of Metaphor...

I came to a city. A great crowd had gathered, listening to a speaker. He said terrible things about men in the city who wore white robes with gold trim. I left there, taking a mountain pass to the next city. On that road there was a cliff. I saw a man wearing white robes with gold trim hanging off the cliff. The speaker was there, & he offered the man his hand. “No,” said the man in the gold-trimmed robe. “I would rather die than be helped by you.”

And, this was a statement of fact, not a belief on my part, which is why I suggested you Google it.

Conservatives have been called "bigots" for several decades, and we learned to brush it off for just how silly of an accusation it was.
Then, after 2016, we began to realize just how seriously people believed it when they made these obscene statements.
And now, all of a sudden, the new language states that conservatism is some sort of "cult".

The language is growing increasingly dangerous, and this is why I take issue with the question being an absolute or a relative.

Quote
Ecclesiastes 8:15
New King James Version

15 So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.

To avoid taking the above too much out-of-context:

Quote
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes+12%3A13-14&version=NKJV

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
New King James Version
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
14 For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.

The people I was talking about respecting were in reference to adults I knew as a child... These other people were adults at the time... Very long story... Spoon River, two sides to every coin, & so on & so forth....

And there was a time once when the people who spoke to me this way would do so online, but wouldn't do so in person, and it was mutual....
This changed in late 2017, when I was asked to volunteer at WRWK...
I was board opping for two angry talk show hosts who literally had NO IDEA what they were talking about, and after a short time, found myself having to pipe up...

One quickly realized she was in over her head & dropped out... The other realized she had to start reading up on what she was talking about, and quickly earned my respect, in spite of our opposing political views.
I even learned quite a few things that were wrong with the KeyStone Pipeline that the environmental crowd & the lamestream nooz didn't think were worth bothering with...
Point being, yes, I can be this way In public if necessary, and if necessary, I am willing to engage those I find unreasonable.
BUT, if a reasonable counterpoint is presented in a reasonable way, then I'm open to it.

On the heels of him defining the theretofore unknown concept of a "brojob" for me last month, my twenty-one-year-old second cousin today explained to me what a demisexual is, which is something I find interesting. (It is basically someone who claims he or she must feel emotionally bonded with another person before sexual attraction can exist.) Is it usual to have someone half your age as your go-to person to inform you of what sexual terms mean?

I was pondering something and even mentioned when I woke up this morning. If thinking about food can make you hungry, and thinking about sexual things can arouse you, and thinking about something funny can make you laugh, and thinking about something frightening can scare you, I wonder if anyone has ever done a study in which someone thinks intensely about exercise, and then measured to see if that has any effect on the subject’s metabolism and physique?

I hope everyone had a grand Valentine's Day, spent with your beloved squeeze, or at least your favorite b-movie sweetheart. We didn't go anywhere, wasn't feasible for a lot of reasons, plus I didn't want to, I'm away too often anyway, so I guess our old '00s tradition of going to the Hyatt Regency in Chicago for the holiday is just a memory, but it was still a sweet day spent with my family, waiting for the snow to fall, and I enjoyed it.

When I was in Catholic high school they used to tell us every year not to forget Valentine's Day began as a commemoration of when the Romans shot Saint Valentine full of arrows for....I dunno, not renouncing Christ or some such, and not to forget that when we celebrated the day, but that killjoy attitude always reminded me that religious celibates were sour-graping the rest of us who stood a chance of getting a romantic kiss on February 14th. (Something I was destined not to get til I was mid-way through their tyrannical hold anyway.)

So, may we all have the Valentine's Day we desire next year, in sweeter times.

I wonder why people don't spontaneous combust anymore. Is it because of junk food?

In December 2010, the death of Michael Faherty, a 76-year-old man in County Galway, Ireland, was recorded as "spontaneous combustion" by the coroner. The doctor, Ciaran McLoughlin, made this statement at the inquiry into the death: "This fire was thoroughly investigated and I'm left with the conclusion that this fits into the category of spontaneous human combustion, for which there is no adequate explanation."

Ah ok. It just seems like this sort of thing doesn't happen as much anymore.

-edit to add-

Quote
Benjamin Radford, science writer and deputy editor of the science magazine Skeptical Inquirer, contends, "Faherty's case may not be as mysterious as it looks. There was, after all, an open fire close to his burned body. It seems likely that a spark or ember might have popped from the fire onto his clothing, and caught his clothing on fire. It's not clear why the coroner conclusively ruled this explanation out." Radford also casts doubt on the plausibility of spontaneous human combustion, "If SHC is a real phenomenon (and not the result of an elderly or infirm person being too close to a flame source), why doesn't it happen more often?"

Title: Re: Random Thought Thread: The Sequel
Post by: ER on February 17, 2021, 03:34:24 PM
In college I read a Skeptical Inquirer article that shot holes in the idea of spontaneous human combustion. I'm not saying TSI is the last word in every topic but I do think the researchers provided more reassuring theories than the unsettling idea that any of us could at any time erupt from the inside out in flames.

I agree though, SHC isn't something you heard about much anymore.

It's not something happens every day. It happened then just as often as it does now, I reckon. How many times has this been reported to happen in the last 200 years?  I'm sure some sorry soul exploded into flames for some reason we don't understand. Charles Fort started documenting it in the 1920's.
My opinion on it? I have no clue why someone would burst into flames. One theory is it only happens to drunks.

County jail sucks for one main reason- the food is awful. They got a thing called meatloaf that is some type of mystery meat that would make a vending machine sandwhich look good. And that's the best part of it. Not butter. Even with oatmeal. We never got butter. Or real meat.Except when we got hot dogs. No mustard or ketchup. Just a hot dog and and bread. I am not joking. Jail sucks. Jail food is horrifying.
That is why I eat lunch meat and peanut butter to this day. You could buy a jar of peanut butter from commissary. I used it on everything, just to make it edible.
I swear to any God that may or may not exist this is true.

I said to my kids, let's see what the weirdest thing we can buy here is. We passed by Turkish hookahs and frozen goat testicles, and rattlesnake jerky, and gluten-free lingenberry pop-tarts, and finally decided the weirdest thing in the store was butter made from Siberian reindeer milk. How big was this store? Airplane hangers come in a variety of sizes.

Biggest store I’ve been in is probably an old Walmart Supercenter, one which they originally called Hypermart USA. Had a cool barrel arch from the entrances to the back of the store, going by memory.

Was it bigger than that? More than 250,000 sqft?

My maternal grandmother has prayed so many rosaries in her long lifetime off by the ocean that she's worn calluses between her finger and thumb, and when I was little I used to ask if I could feel them, and she'd usually let me. I think she was proud of her calluses because she saw them as well-earned and  a sign of holiness.

Well last night I met my friend in her car for a minute because she wanted to give me something that came for me while I was away for a few days last week, and I touched her hand and she had this rough place on her right thumb which I asked about because I'd never noticed it, and she said lately she's developed a habit of stroking her thumb with her index finger and doing it so long that she's made a little line of rough skin on her thumb.

I asked her why she did that and she said maybe it was a nervous thing.

I said what, you? You're high-energy but what do you have to be nervous about?

She goes, "The welfare of other people."

Well, I guess I get that but still wearing your thumb hard by rubbing it is not helping anyone that much.

Then she said she worried about me all the time and said I have been a challenging friend to know but she loved me anyway, and I thought about that all night, she loves me but worries about me so much that I'm part of why she's begun a nervous habit that's rubbed her skin rough?

Is that sweet or troublesome?

I totally did not encounter a single ghost alone yesterday at Brian's haunted apartment, and did not get demon possessed whatsoever, but I did keep Bob Larson's number on speed dial, just in case.

Everybody who knows I recently rented that place for a year just because he used to live there thinks I'm morbid, but it's not that, I just have a lot of good memories about it.

It didn't get spooky there at first, weeks back, when I first got it, and I wasn't thinking it would, it wasn't supposed to, but the last two times I was there before yesterday it felt like.....

I don't know what to say. It felt like it was not a good place for me to go. Truthfully it felt malevolent. I am sure if his sister went there with me she wouldn't feel that at all, which is just her happy nature but whether what I have felt there is in my head or something outside it, I have felt very uneasy there at times. Like: stand up, walk out fast, do not look behind you, do not ever go back. This is not a good place for you, and something is using that.

Yeah, it was like that.

Life is strange and some places don't seem to play by everyday rules.

Life is strange and some places don't seem to play by everyday rules.

That I will agree with. I seen ufos, I had poltergeist activity when I lived in that old shack in back of the Welch's factory.  It usta be a migrant house in the early 1900's. It had an outhouse out back. (we had plumbing inside.)
Everything on top of my fridge just went flying off. Cereal boxes. A mouse trap. A can of Ajax. Everything.
Sometimes in the middle of the night we (Me, Jed, Eddie, Leroy, and Corky) would wake up because it sounded like someone dropped a truck onto the roof. It shook the house. I loved that place. Big yard- acres of woods in the back. No neighbors breathing up your ass. But it had a habit of going on spooky binges once in a while.
I have no clue what to make of this kinda madness.

Death is part of existence too, but I ain't eager to embrace it.

Taking a nap is part of existence too. It won't kill you. If you sleep very well, birds are chirping, you feel like mowing the lawn and cooking outside!

I just make insomnia work for me by doing things like flitting around the dark windows under a sheet, seeing if the neighbors come over to report a ghost.

I never cared for Adric as a companion, but they did give him an awesome death scene that almost made him seem cool.

Adric's end was a gasper, absolutely. As a kid watching the show on PBS with my dad I was also gobsmacked when Peri died, but of course later that was explained away as an illusion, which was more a copout than a relief, I thought. Thinking she got killed after enduring all the bad stuff they did to her in that final episode made me go lie on my bed and stare at the ceiling a while.

I don't understand not embracing insomnia as part of existence, like getting kicked in the shins a certain number of allotted times before death...

The only one whoever kicked me in my shin was myself.

Well, when I say embrace it, I mean lean into it. If it's there just get up and use the time. It happens to me a lot, oddly, when I'm the most tired, and I've gotten quite a few things done in my sleepless hours. Insomnia always sucks at least a little though. At least in my case it's more than being unable to sleep, insomnia has a definite feel to it. A tone. Like a brain disturbance.

Hard day today. I drove five hours each way to visit a former co-worker who was recently in a very bad aviation accident. He was handling it well on the surface, evincing that military toughness that seems part of the job, but he is lucky to be alive and has a long road of ahead of him, including more surgeries on top of several he's already had. In fact he's been in a VA facility for about five weeks and will be til summer, with a lot of physical therapy coming.

His take? "Yeah, it f**ked up my day, but at least I got a third Purple Heart out of the deal."

It was very hard seeing him in a wheelchair, but, hey, he was still himself and will live on.

And I'm glad I went.

Always wondered why I've never been able to have a well balanced & thoughtfully structured conversation with other people....

Y' ever notice whoever lives on the left side of the set lives in a brightly painted, well lit shoebox, while the people on the right side of the set live live in a rustic luxury suite, even though it's always the same building, on the same floor?

So at this other forum I hang out a long time member passed away recently. Apparently he had been hospitalized since February, and from my understanding had covid and pneumonia. He posted a few updates on the forum about his condition up until two weeks before his passing in mid-March. He was only 33 years old.
I never had a conversation with him on the forum but he was well liked by those who did.
I don't know why but this is the kind of thing that shocks me more than any celebrity death. R.I.P.

I know RC thinks I never let ten words do when a few hundred might work as well,    but what the heck, like eye color and addiction, it’s in my DNA…

I agree with you that atheism precludes a dislike of something a person is convinced isn’t there, Rev, but you really have never encountered the phenomenon of people who say they’re atheists but seem absolutely obsessed with hating God? That surprises me, because I have seen that a lot.

Oh, I get hating some Christians, I spent a lot of my younger days unfairly lumping a couple billion people in with the book burning Moral Majority sorts. I also understand anger toward God, and think it takes strong intellectual muscles to even subscribe to the idea an unseen God could possibly exist in a world so full of pain.

The concept of so many atheists hating God clicked with me long ago when I heard a George Orwell quote:

“He was an embittered atheist, the sort of atheist who does not so much disbelieve in God as personally dislike Him….”

And when I heard that, I thought….Orwell was right, there are those sorts of atheists. And when I realized that, I noticed most people I knew who said they were atheists seemed to spend a lot of time hating this God they claimed wasn’t even there.

Like Penn Jillette (whom I like very much in general, by the way) he will take almost any chance to tell you there is no God, yet he also gleefully calls this being he doesn’t believe in a “prick” and some other things I probably shouldn’t type here. That’s anger.

Or the insightful XTC song Dear God, it concludes by saying “I don’t believe in you” only after addressing this supposedly non-existent personage and indicting it with a multitude of crimes. How can you indict “nothing” with “something”?

You can’t call yourself an atheist and have it both ways, maintaining God doesn’t exist, yet making God a legitimate target of anger. That’s like me blaming Santa for not bringing me that hair crimper when I was nine.

I do believe atheists exist and know some, usually get along fine with them, but I know a lot more angry sorts who do seem to hate God and then manifest that hatred in saying they don’t believe in God. (I also notice those types seem to be under a certain age, to be honest, and evolve away from that when they’re older. Go figure, eh?)

Slightly off topic but I married a man who is so apathetic about the question of God’s existence he genuinely does not care about the topic enough to try to define the word that best describes how he feels about God. He’ll go to church with his mom if she asks him for a special reason, and then walk out and not be able to tell you what the church service was about. But that’s another sort of person altogether, neither believer, nor agnostic, nor atheist. (I sometimes envy him….)

Lot of shades of color in white light.

Don't know if this will help explain it or not, but this is my take on things. I have mentioned on other threads that I don't believe in god, but if I did, then I would hate him. When we lost Lilly-Beth we hadn't done anything wrong that caused that, it wasn't some incompatible genetics between myself and Kristi. It was just one of those things that unfortunately happen. If I were to believe in god, then there would be a reason that she'd died. It would be because he (or she or it or they or whatever) had decided it was going to happen. If I believed in god, then I'd have to accept that he murdered my child and there is no way I could respond to that with anything but hatred. Now generally the first responses I get to that line of thinking is that we just aren't capable of understanding a being as powerful as a god and that he has his reasons for these actions. Doesn't matter to me. If he exists, then it was his choice to create us that way and I am dealing with the limitations he gave us the best I can and I am responding the way I would to anything committing what I'd perceive as an evil act be they animal, man or god.

Anyway, hopefully, that gives you a view on a different perspective. Writing it has got me thinking on a tangent about how if our understanding of good and evil is imperfect, then what was the big deal about eating the apple anyway, but that's another topic.

Alex, it may be as some people say that God has a plan and the loss of children fits into it. I don't know. I do suspect if one of my children died (the most horrible thing I can think of) I would feel hate for God.

No, I can't say I've personally ever encountered the phenomenon Orwell is talking about, though of course some people would meet that definition. I've never seen Penn Gillette as angry at God, though I don't really follow him. I don't interpret the XTC song as being angry at God, either. It's a reductio ad absurdum on the problem of evil: let's hypothetically accept that God exists. If so, he endorses killing babies and mass starvation and all sorts of suffering. Therefore, I don't believe in him.

My high school girlfriend once insisted that I believed in God despite me telling her I didn't. I believe she was probably threatened by the possibility that everyone didn't deep down believe in God. Therefore, she needed to believe I was just in denial about my own belief. Of course, I can't know her mind.

Sometimes an Atheist is an atheist because they hates God. Sometimes it's because they read the Bible. Sometimes it's because they see the Church turn people into a cult (a la Televangelists). Sometimes a priest turns someone in need away. And sometimes it's because the people in their family claims to be Christian/Catholic/whatever and goes against what they either believe in or go against what they read.Bottom line is that not every Atheist hates God, sometimes it's the surroundings/people that does.

Just left a Facebook Disco group that rejected my submission of Gloria by Laura Braningan. They said it is not disco.
Well, its not disco in a classic 1970s way but it is still disco. It's the most disco sounding song released in 1982 and already sounded "disco-dated" back then. It's a cover of a 1979 Italian disco song. It uses the same arrangements and beats, only the lyrics were changed to English.
Branigan's version is not even Post-Disco. It's just a 1:1 cover of the 1979 original that happen to be released in 1982.

But ok, fine, whatever.

Some guy named Larry Kudlow is warning us about "plant based beer" on Fox news-

"So get ready: You can throw back a plant-based beer with your grilled Brussels sprouts and wave your American flag. Call it July 4 green," Kudlow said.

Error 404 (Not Found)!!1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9og9f44skiE#)

Yeah. As opposed to meat based beer?
ALL beer is plant based , moron!

Just had to share this.

I was talking with my daughter and she said "We should watch the good Troll movie."
I asked "Which one?"
She said "The good one."
I asked "Which one?"
She said "The good one.  The one with the witch?"
I asked "Troll 2?"
She said "I guess so."

I'm so proud!

Some loser called me on the phone trying to pull a medicare scam on me. I told him I was Bela Lugosi. And was doing a Lugosi imitation. He started calling me Mr.Bela! I continued f**king with him- he was asking me where I was born- (I told him "I am from Hungary- but NOW I am American!"  :bouncegiggle:
, and even when I got tired of it and said to him , when he asked if he could call me back, I told him to ask for Count Dracula.
He had no clue what I was talking about.  :bouncegiggle:
"Dracula?"
" Yeeees."
"Mr. Dracula-"
...and I bust out laughing and hung up!
Made my day!  :twirl:

There tends to be a new song every now & then about "The Writing On The Wall", as well as songs about the need to read it, or or the need to learn "how" to read & understand it, etc., yet, the only song I really know about the author of said writing, is by The Coasters, which is about a justifiably unappreciated high school miscreant who won't accept responsibility for his behavior....................

youtube blocked a music video for me in Europe because the video is owned by a European record company. Makes sense.

You do know that the phrase "the writing on the wall" comes from the Biblical book of Daniel, right?

^BTW, can you name any other popular rock songs about said author, or am I to assume Charlie Brown by The Coasters is really about The Book Of Daniel?^

I think it is funny that Italian Chefs are not familiar with cheddar cheese. They are suspicious of the orange color.

If it's not Parmesan, it wouldn't be Italian...........
Or Mozzarella........
I think it depends on whether they come from the North of Italy or the South of Italy.............................

Been a nice few days.

Watched our senior class graduate Friday night; always a poignant moment as my young Eagles leave the nest!
Went to the river Saturday and found one of my favorite spots with no footprints since the last rise; came home with a hatful of fossils and arrowheads;  then went to an end-of-the-school-year picnic and jamboree and got to hang with my students and their families for a couple of hours, eating burgers and brats and playing various games.  Slept like a log Saturday night, church Sunday was nice, went out to eat and got an extra appetizer for free after the waitress made a mistake on our order.  Came home, had some snuggle time with the wife, shredded a couple of boss fights on DS3, and watched the season finale of THE NEVERS, a TV show that really turned out to be quite amazing.  Today was my last full day of school, and tonight I went and watched my sweet little 8th graders graduate and become high schoolers.

Sometimes, life is pretty sweet.

Who are you going to see? Decided to take a chance and pick up tickets for Alestorm, Gloryhammer and Aether Realm when they go on tour in December in the hope that covid doesn't cause them to get cancelled.

That's probably why my pizza slice tasted funny when I was there in 2002  :tongueout:

If Dirty Harry encountered some friendly neighborhood vigilante who runs out onto his front lawn wit a Magnum Research BFR .45-70, Harry tells him to go back inside & mr vigilante does, I wonder if he'd spend the rest of the movie wondering around with pistol envy......

Bet it would've made an interesting episode of Sledge Hammer! (1986-1988)..........

Perhaps, somewhere on this vast plane of imagination, within someone’s personal library of books & movies, Winston Smith & Travis Bickle may have an encounter…
Maybe they’d exchange diaries, read each other’s novels, and watch each other’s movies….

But what if they tried to sneak into each other’s stories?
I can imagine each having something the other desires, yet having a lot in common…
I could certainly picture Travis disguising himself a as the Thought Police so he could sneaking into the Ministry of Love so he could watch Winston & Julia upstairs from the curio shop…
And then, maybe through some editing mistake, or perhaps Travis makes a wrong turn getting leaving Winston’s story, the big .44 magnum Travis drops in his own story ends up in the stairwell of Winston’s apartment……  Then what?

Trying to imagine a scenario where AMC's stock price actually makes sense:
hackers attacked all streaming services
all pro athletes got some new form of covid

so the only thing we could do to entertain ourselves was... go to movies
