Our firm is literally surrounded by wild rabbits. Makes sense as there is mostly fields and woods nearby. Just last week riding my bycicle to work for night shift a rabbit was running in front of me half the way to work.

The local golf course has a plot by the road it hardly ever keeps up.

When the grass gets as high as one may stand, the rabbit start to get brave, & wonder out to see what's up......

Then somebody comes along with the bush hog & bring the roughage down to ankle height, & y' don't see the rabbit's for quite a while...

Buddleja davidii butterfly bush truly is a remarquable plant, able to start from a seed as fine as a human hair, less than a centimeter long, able to grow into something taller than a person.............

Yesterday I had not one, not two, but THREE roadrunners in my yard!
And not an ACME product in sight!

I am enjoying the heck out of DINOHUNTERS.

I used Tiana's new deep fryer today. Made the best fried chicken ever. Soaked it in salt water all night. I used pancake mix and Drakes, and added my own spice. Best chicken I ever made.

My son Jed and his wife Tonya, and my grandson Aiden are coming over! To cook on the grill!
I get lonesome- Tiana works from 2 in the afternoon until 12 at night.

My wife and I are back on the Whole30 diet this summer, and man some of that food is GOOD!
Taco salad with creamy avocado dressing for lunch, and for supper baked sweet potatoes stuffed with ground turkey, onions, and garlic topped with a tahini sauce.  YUM!

(And I have lost 12 pounds over the last 40 days!)

Maybe not the most original idea, but I think it'd be cool to to make a movie that starts with US Troops finding one of these things at the end of WW2........

My experience is in factories & warehouses and radio.

The closest I've ever come to the medical industry, was when I did waste product disposal for a medical supply warehouse.

Couldn't get to sleep last night for the longest time, then woke up early to let our dogs out, and walked outdoors into the most beautiful, quiet, fogscape I'd seen in a very long time. Pine trees became cathedral towers half-hidden in earthbound clouds, the moist air swirled around like a cloak narrowing the world to the distance of a tennis serve, and when the sun finally rose it pierced all this like it was going through stained glass, setting off diamond prisms in a million droplets of water clinging to tree branches, adorning every tree with necklaces of crystal. Being out there to see this wonder more than made up for any grogginess I might feel later today.

So far this year we've had the covid 19 pandemic, and here in California, the wildfires, also I seem be spending a good part of the weekends working on cost estimates for various projects just to catch up on my Monday thru Friday job. Last night I was watching TV with my wife and feeling sorry for myself, at about 11:30 PM there was a 4.6 earthquake, the epicenter was about 2 miles from my home. I'm going to take that as a subtle hint that things can always get worse, covid 19 will pass, the wildfires will be put out, and I'm fortunate in these times to to have a job that I can do from home. All in all I'm pretty well off.

That's why I never understood food fights.

Found a Centipede arcade game by the road yesterday morning, but I could not lift it into my truck. Someone offered to help, but if even if we'd gotten it into the truck, I would'nt have had anyone to help get it out.  Got someone to help lift, & went back after work to see if we could get the Centipede cabinet. It was gone. Yesterday was trash day, so there may be one fewer Centipede machine in the world.

Then again, the machine's back & top panel had come off, & they were still sitting by the road. I'd think the trash men would've picked those up, so maybe there's hope? I would've at least liked the bevel. (Top label.) Most of the other cabinet graphics had worn off. There was a tag hanging on the back of the monitor which said it had new caps, but I don't know how old that was. The folks who owned the business said it froze. The monitor had burn-in from a Pac-Man or Ms. Pacman game, visible even with the game off.

So, yeah, not in good condition. But still sad.  :bluesad:

I read about Facebook algorithm and I still don't know what it means. There's mention of "organic reach" and I'm like, ok.

Algorithm without Facebook seems complicated enough. We didn't learn about that in school.

There isn't a single "Facebook algorithm." There's one algorithm for determining which friends to suggest, one for which ads to display, etc. The algorithms themselves are too complicated for lay people to understand, all you need to know is that a computer program makes decisions about what to display to you based on its analysis of what you click on.

I don't think Trump has any philosophy or convictions, just egotism and knee jerk reactions. He didn't even bother to create a platform for his second term. I think his supporters project their own beliefs and desires onto him.

I place great value on free expression, and I do have libertarian tendencies, mostly based on "leave it alone/leave me alone" but I see a lot of selfishness in libertarians I can't admire.
 
I do admire much of what is described in your links above as "traditional conservatism" though I don't always embody that because I am simply not a conformist at heart. (Neo-conservatism makes my skin crawl.)

There's just something miserably self-deprecating about having a thought and assuming nobody cares about it. I admit I've known people who could be shouting, "I'm on fire! The ONLY way the Speaker of the House succeeds to the Presidency is if the VP and President both die, or get removed from office, SIMULTANEOUSLY.  The Speaker would NEVER succeed to the Vice Presidency.  If the VP dies, resigns, or is removed, the President appoints a new VP who has to be approved by both houses of Congress.  If the VP succeeds to the Presidency, his first job is to appoint a new VP (as Ford did with Nelson Rockefeller).  The Speaker plays no role in that selection.


And besides, no Speaker of the House would ever give up that incredibly powerful role for the powerless and thankless job of Vice President.  The Speaker makes and shapes policy every day, the VP only does those things that the President assigns him to do.  Other than that, his or her constitutional functions are to preside over the Senate and cast the tie breaking vote.

I think I'd be too afraid of getting hurt skating to enjoy it. Actually that goes for a lot of physical undertakings. Rock climbing, whitewater rafting, skydiving.... Even mountain biking weighs badly on the risk/reward scale. I think I've saved my bravery for other things.

That conviction is a shameful date in American history. Resisting the draft was Muhammad Ali's greatest achievement and the reason why he is a great person, not just a great athlete. With his money and celebrity he could have easily gotten a deferment or gone to another country. He was willing to give up the best years of his athletic career, and his freedom, to make a conscientious stand against the Vietnam War. And the Supreme Court eventually agreed with him.

No need to point out all the others who took the easy way out. Almost all rich people took the easy way out. As much as I admire Ali for his stand, I fear if I had been of draft age then and had the money, I would have taken the easy way out.

I was curious why it was overturned, too.

Skimming the decision, it appears that one DA offered Cosby immunity from criminal prosecution if he would testify at civil trial. He accepted the deal. Then she retired, and a future DA not only brought criminal charges against Cosby, but used his civil testimony against him. It's pretty damn likely he never would have testified in the first place if they hadn't promised not to bring charges.

Not a fan of Cosby (and he does "deserve" prison, in the moral sense), but this reasoning for overturning the conviction isn't clearly a miscarriage of justice. (It was close, basically a 4-3 decision.)

 

The problem of course is the use of the term "miscarriage of justice".  I am reminded of everyone "knowing" OJsimpson was guilty, yet he was acquitted...

The fact that cosby has been released on a "technicality" can seem a miscarriage of justice, but in fact is merely a correction.

The fact that the specific crime was tried and the perpetrator convicted of the crime, jailed and freed, is the miscarriage of justice.  Freed or incarcerated; either way is a miscarriage of justice. 
 
Nonetheless cosby's reputation is trash.

It's been months, & I still have one last potted cabbage I have no Idea what to do with.....
I didn't put them all in one place, I planted them in different places around the yard....  I even have one out in the middle of the lawn where I had to uproot a dead lilac....

Back in the spring, I though my liatris had all died, so I mowed them down & planted a catnip plant in their place....  Then the liatris came back with a vengeance, & while the catnip plant is still growing, it's not getting any light & the bugs keep eating the leaves off of it....

Funny thing about my liatris....  In all the pictures I see, the stalks are supposed to bloom all at once, but mine never do....
Mine always bloom at the top, then start working their way down, while dying at the top.....

I let my then-3 year old son watch it one night, thinking that the movie’s slow pace in the first act would put him to sleep. Instead he stayed up and watched intently the entire 2 hours of the movie, then had me keep rewinding all of the Alien’s “gotcha” scenes so he could watch them again. It also said that due to obstruction it was unable to prove there hadn't been collusion (or had been). In no way did it prove him innocent. If you don't believe me, go read it, or just look up the previous argument where parts of it were quoted that prove your position wrong.

Everyone who has ever been cleared of anything may have actually done their crime. If they couldn't prove it and the person is innocent I don't know if you're American that's how it works here

So what did Trump do? I don't understand. The case against him was that there was blackmail material the form of tapes that would be used against him when he was in office or that Russia and he were working behind the scenes together for him to steal the election. In the end all they found were procedural things relating to the case itself.

Due to the obstructions Mueller experienced, he wrote he was unable to determine what trump had, or hadn't done. The report did not condemn him, but neither did it clear him. It very specifically stated it did not exonerate him of anything criminal. Since it was an investigation, not a trial I would imagine it would have only provided evidence towards a trial that could have then cleared him, but you'd have an ask someone who is more of an expert in US law. I know in the U.K. if we had a similar investigation, it would then pass the information onto the Crown Prosecution Service, who would then be the ones to decide if there was enough evidence to go to trial (that doesn't say they are guilty or not, merely that there is enough evidence for a trial to determine such).

Personally, I would say obstructing such an investigation is suspicious on its own and points to something to hide, but that is just my view.

There was a question posed here about what if humans had a mating season (good question) and I asked someone not long ago about the consequences of sexual reproduction being a painful act. (Supposedly it is for some species, like female cats.) I think life would not be able to thrive if this were the case. I had a class called Biology of Reproduction and honestly, the way new generations are brought into being is varied and complex, and some species have a gender whose entire purpose is simply to be the breeder of future members of the species. (The queen among a colony of ants and bees comes to mind but there are others.) Even aside from the fact that it's the study of, well, mostly sex, reproduction as a subject is strangely sci-fi and compelling to read about because is can be such a complex process, with species existing who carry out fertilization and gestation orally, and some others who asexally clone themselves by mitosis. It's crazy.

I was shocked to find Paris was the most litter-free capital city I'd ever visited. The French are selective neat freaks, scorning litter but not always being tidy when it comes to themselves. A train in Paris smells like tobacco and heavy perfumes and colognes, and here and there an unwashed scent hanging around a person, even the well-dressed, yet the trains are almost antiseptically clean.

London was dirty almost everywhere but I loved it anyway. I was once there  in the company of a local, and as I watched person after person walk along and toss down their empty wrappers and drink cans, I asked him why people did that, and he seemed surprised I'd ask, and said, "They just do."

Washington DC was very mixed, clean one neighborhood, dirty another. The dirtiest parts were not always the poorest.

Nassau was a facade that hid its real nature, looking good on the surface, but someone there told me about a dead homeless man left in the street off the tourist section for a whole day, lying there, getting stepped around, no one caring to get him off the sidewalk, and that was probably the real Nassau.

Wellington, New Zealand was decently clean, Ottawa was cleaner than DC, Brasilia surprised me by being tidier than I'd figured it'd be, but in Brazil all the public services seemed to operate on bribes.

Ankara was amazing. Well-scrubbed and filled with polite locals who seemed personally honor-bound to be as nice as possible to a guest in their nation. Turkey was not at all what I was expecting.

Dublin though was always a  litter-strewn s**thole when I'd slip across there every summer with my grandfather and see the wonderful museums. The trash that lay all over Dublin, especially north of the river, that bore out all the scorn my west country grandmother ever heaped on it.

I'll not speak of other the other capital I visited because if I put a name to it, few would believe I'd truly been there.

I remember being very impressed with how clean and neat Tokyo was.  The Japanese don't like litterbugs at all.

How come so many people want to go back in time to high school? If ever I found myself back there I think I would start violently screaming, which would probably also solve the problem of my being there, but then again my high school was not like most in that it had two functions: for most there it existed to impress good colleges by putting its name on a diploma without actually demanding much more from a student than most schools would; or to create a handful of high-functioning scholars to bring academic glory onto the school and carry the reputation of the others.

I was one of the latter, existing in a pressure cooker environment so demanding and intense that most days I wanted to stand up and walk out, and once or twice actually did, which sent the staff into meetings trying to figure out why a cog in their machine was giving them a problem, and concluding it was a nut behind the wheel.

The fact they didn't kick me out revealed something amazing to me: if I gave them the results they wanted I could otherwise get away with anything else there.

Wish I'd figured that out a few grades sooner.

My schoolteacher friend says it's a shame I went there instead of a gentler school like the one where he teaches, but if I had, well, would I have known the difference without a comparison, and just have complained about that school too? I think it's my nature not to have liked school, no matter how "good" at it I seemed at the time.

Thoughts like these arise after living through a Christmas season hearing: ".... I was back at school, and felt that old familiar pain...." Though I'm pretty sure that's not what Dan Fogelberg meant. I bet his school didn't have counselors who tried to guilt trip you over getting A's instead of A+'s, though I guess they wouldn't have indulged my rejection of them my last year either because a public school doesn't live or die on reputation like mine did.

I've always felt sorry for people who think that your school days are the best ones of your life. Imagine the rest of your life being an anti-climax.

I went to an English Public School from 1980 - 1984: a school founded on EPS principles in my hometown where you had to wear ties, a suit in the winter and even a straw basher. It was both the best and the worst of times: some of the teachers were brutal bastards, some were nasty and some were just plain bad.  :buggedout:

Yes, we had both girls and boys houses. I was in MacDonald and our sister house was Hamilton.

I will never forget MacDonald winning the interhouse sports in 1982: that was a surreal day. At one point, we became aware that we had a chance of winning the competition and then, the unthinkable happened. We won. We were screaming, crying, hugging each other and I remember after we took a lap of honor around our track, I sat down in the stands and cried: tears yes, but happy tears.  :smile:

School is a different experience for everyone, but really, what I think people really wax nostalgic for is not so much the classes and teachers and learning experience as just the opportunity to be YOUNG again; to have all your future ahead of you and to experience the joys of life and love for the first time all over again.

Flash forward eight or nine weeks and those same people likely not only forgave her all that, they probably forgot they ever felt that way about her as they cried and wailed that she was the People's Princess whom they'd always loved and would love to the end of time. (Insert chirping crickets....)

I went out today with my dancer friend to see her new studio expansion and we had lunch and I was like, "Y'know, I'm real proud of you for never being bulimic."

That got me an odd glance from a server who overheard but the thing is, I actually am proud of her for that since bulimia is the common cold of dancers. It's even called the "dancers' disease."

Me, I think I'd go for tape worms instead of barfing all the time if I had no other viable scenarios and had to be ten pounds underweight all my career.

Well, It seems that this year I will continue with my tradition of be single in Valentine's Day. It's not like I really care about that day, but I start to think about why be single at my 38 don't worry me. I mean, I really want to meet a woman and have children, start my own family, but here I am. The irony it is this 'statement' sound a bit depressive, but it is not. OK, just a little.

The irony is, when I was your age I really wanted to meet a wife and start a family. In my 40s I decided I wouldn't chase that dream anymore---and suddenly, more women started coming to me. I heard the morning after amid static on a distant station from downstate and thought, did they really say that, and felt a jolt of shock that I remember was bigger than any sadness, but I heard it as a passing headline, not any extended coverage, and we talked about it a moment and then I and those I was with went on, and because you try to save batteries out there, we didn't turn the radio on except for a few minutes each morning when the weather was good (and then the batteries came out and got stored in a waterproof baggie) and we finished our hike at Mount Katahdin a few days later and got back to find all the spectacle and grief and coverage on TV showing acres of stacked flowers and people lining London streets, so I only got Point A's announcement and Point C's mega-event, no point B transition like most people had to prepare me for how big a cultural moment her death unfolded to be. It was surreal to come back into that when I'd only caught it as a news headline and not much else, and to be grubby and sore and cold and worn out and riding a weary achievement high of finishing a hard trail section, but the world was filled with upset people grieving. (And people loudly rejecting that grief to anyone who would listen.)

Rarely in my life have I seen a once-respected US politician slip so far. After 9-11 all he would have had to do is nothing else, keep quiet, make happy speeches, ride the glory train, and he'd have been set. But instead.....

I remember in the aftermath of September the 11th he was lauded as a good future candidate for the presidency and he really did seem like the man for the job (from an outsiders perspective anyway). From that to press conferences across from a sex shop is quite some fall.

In all honesty, people would be shocked if they knew how rarely security cameras are fully operational (generally they cost a lot to repair and no one seems to want to pay to keep them working all the time). Still, even then sometimes it feels suspicious.

I got a text from Donald Trump, Jr asking for money this week.

I may or may not have used the phrase "little fascist hobgoblin" in my reply.

I used to get emails from the 2016 Trump campaign begging for money. I eventually wrote back that I was going to donate $5 to John Kasich every time they emailed me. The emails stopped.

Here in Michigan a Trucker Convoy (like Canada has going on) was planned and held. Nobody showed up.

I was reading a Tales from the Crypt comic, and this guy murders his wife, buries her, and plants a peach tree on her grave. When the cops come to investigate, the killer offers one of them a peach from the tree (which somehow is bearing fruit already.) He bites into it and blood squirts out. The end.

Yesterday we explored an immense abandoned mall. Huge place. Almost 3/4ths of a mile if you walk all the way around it inside. When it opened in the 1980s it had space for about 300 tenants and five anchors but it never thrived and was eventually deserted in stages til it was left totally empty. It was surreal in there, like a dark echoing time capsule, chairs, tables, signs, merchandise left in place, movie posters from the 2000s visible in the inside multiplex, dead plants, dead palm trees, unemptied trash bins, even petrified food left on some food court counters. Except for a busted skylight the place wasn't in that bad a shape but it had a serious Chernobyl vibe. Eerie.

That sounds totally cool!  Wish you'd gotten pics or video.

Yesterday was a good day. The sun shone, spring was in the air, I had it medically confirmed things are well in the immediate sense, everybody was happy, and there were multiple celebrations of various sorts throughout the afternoon and into the night.

Today the sky is silver, the air is chilly, the first flowers are emerging, I saw a pregnant deer out back, and life was again good this morning.

I could Groundhog Day this life.

Why do the LeMat Revolver & the revolving rifle always end up on lists of the worst guns in history, but Colt's 1846 walker only gets the occasional mention, & Colt's 1868 Richards-Mason conversion is practically celebrated?

How come the Walch 12 shot never makes these lists? Two shots, one chamber? Can you say, "Handless Hank?"

Or how about the TEC 9? Even as a kid, it reminded me of a toy gun that shot real bullets...  Even though they looked cool, I wouldn't have wanted one....

And Volcanic Arms.... Yeah, I know, They were the forerunner to two successful companies, but jeez, they don't look like something you get at the gun store, they look like something you find in the "AS SEEN ON TV" section at the drug store....

And how come the 1857 Smith & Wesson gets credit for being the first cartridge revolver, when it was really the 1846/1858 Lefaucheux?

I randomly remembered many years ago, a week or so after I'd been stabbed in the shoulder I was walking down the street and met an old woman I knew. She didn't know about the stab wound (I was keeping it as secret as possible for various reasons) and clapped me on the shoulder during the conversation. I felt waves of nausea washing over my body and struggled to stay upright. I have no doubt the colour must have drained from my face but somehow I managed to stay on my feet.

Then she clapped me on the same shoulder a second time.

My mother, age 79, receives (physical) catalogs from The Vermont Country Store, the Country Store, and The Country Door all of which sell the same sort of stuff.
