Title: ASK ME ANYTHING
Post by: RCMerchant on March 20, 2021, 02:12:49 PM
Because ER said there wasn't an "ask me anything " thread.
So ask me or anybody on this world anything!
I'm pretty sure I don't know the answer, but somebody might!
What do you have to lose?

Cats. I'm sure they would just say " How the f**k would I know?" If you ever ask them a question.

Lying on the floor somewhere drunk, or at work.
1986? I was 25 in 1986. I couldn't find my ass with both hands half the time in 1986.

First question- I don't know Adam from Adam- second...

this is no joke. Yes, I had when I was young all the time. I did not like it.

You guys are bombarding me with stuff! I don't mind answering them!
Now it's my turn!

ER- Where were you when Adolf Hitler shot himself in the mouth in 1945?

I have to reference Hitler every day,  because that's my supposed thing, according to some folks in the universe. And I'm sure it's true.
While I try to figure out what I just said..

Where were you when Hitler shot himself in the mouth? I wasn't born yet, myself.
I don't think you were either! We have something in common beyond Robert Heinlien and Shirley Jackson!

Well, according to a mid-causal entity my friend Mitch queries, when Hitler died in 1945 I was in the bardo, having completed a life of some importance in England, and preparing to be reborn in a brief life in Cambodia. So..... shrug.

No.  Lugosi stuff goes for thousands of dollars. no joke.
I do have an autograph by Carrol Borland who appeared with Lugosi in MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (1935)

I had to take it out of it's frame to scan it.

I also pretty much avoid watching other people eat.

Where do you go for the best pizza, burgers or fried chicken? (answer any or all if you like)

I live in a small town in Germany and we do have a few places that sell pizza. Germans like thin crust pizza and they like their pizza simple when it comes to toppings. Ham, salami, mushrooms, onions, cheese and sometimes bell peppers. When I order pizza I usually order from a local doner kebab place. They have a good variety and their crust isn't too thin. I usually go for sucuk pizza or doner pizza and sometimes 4-cheese pizza. I still haven't found a place that makes a decent ground beef pizza though.

Burgers are hit and miss where I live. Even though they offer outrageous and delicious burger creations they all fail at burger buns. Problem is, there is no such thing as soft bread in Germany. They have like a zillion type of bread but they are all chewy. Stores offer "American Style" burger buns but they are nothing like american buns at all. They are brittle and dry. I've tried burgers from places out of town who claim they make their own buns, but there hasn't been anything truly convincing that made me say "now that's a damn good bun!".
Another problem are burger patties. Most places use frozen burger patties and you can tell right away. IF I want a frzen burger patty I might as well hit up McDonalds.

As far as chicken go, Germans don't do fried chicken. It is all about rotisserie chicken in Germany.

I love  rotisserie chicken ! Me, my Ma, Mike and Glenn lived on it when we were in Liberty, NY in 1979! Because we didn't have a stove. It was cheap. You could get a whole chicken for $$1.50! from the deli! It was a sleazy 24 hour grocery store in Liberty NY. I used to wear a trench coat and steal lunch meat. My brother Mike would be at the counter buying cigarettes. We were starving. We had a hot plate. That, and buttered noddles with salt and pepper.

But now I can eat fried chicken! I stepped up in the world! Kind of.

What is the appeal of vegetarianism? ...

The appeal is to end the suffering of sentient beings.  Though not original to Christianity, kindness to animals has long been rooted in charity of the faithful.  The faithless are often animal rights activists also.  Stop thinking about our own pleasure and it may become clear.  Consumption of meat is certainly primordial and opens the door of evolution.

Is it wrong that I find that response kinda arrogant & without understanding? I mean, fish & shrimp have nerve endings & brains; they react to stimuli; they are certainly aware of sensations & feelings!

Shoot, plants may even have feelings, tho the exact mechanisms they use may be alien to us.

I guess being arrested while wearing a Charlie Manson T shirt .
(it had a picture of Charlie, it was glow in the dark, and said "Is it hot in here or am I crazy?")
I went home on bail and drank a pint of whiskey in the car on the way to court. And then I realized- I'm wearing the same f**king shirt again.
In court. While drunk. I went to jail for 30 days. I beat up a garbage can that was hanging on a light post in front of a bar.  I had no money saved up. I walked out wearing handcuffs. Ended up wearin Van Buern County greens. But I got back! When they cut me loose and told me to go in the shower room and put on my street clothes- I stole a pair of green jail pants buy putting my shop pants on over them. I stole from the cops on the day they let me out of jail!  :bouncegiggle:

So I did 30 days. Good thing I had paid the rent!

A friend's high heels. She didn't believe me that I was the same shoe size as her and insisted I should try hers on. So I put them on and then ran out of the bar wearing them leaving her barefooted.

I've smoked it through a bong, bowl, hash pen, and joint. My preference is edibles, though a hash pen is close second.

I did a wax pen- and then tried to go grocery shopping at Wal-Mart. I made it half way down an aisle and told my son Eddie- "I have to go back."  :buggedout:

Of course I have smoked bongs and joints and any other way possible .
But mostly just a pipe.

Bongs are nice if you want to get real high real fast.
I prefer to drag it out. Take a hit off a bowl. Chill. Jam on music. Take a shot of whiskey.
And take another hit while I change the song.
But if someone ever offers me a hit off a bong, which ain't happened in over 30 years, I would take it.
Sure.

Whiskys from the islands or from Speyside tend to be peatier. Glenlivet is a good one as mentioned by ER and pretty well known. If you want something a little more obscure, try Tomintoul with a Peaty Tang. Benromach have a few good ones. Smokehead is a good one from the islands, although somewhat peatier than I prefer.

Overall, I suspect not that much difference. History is made of large movements and I suspect individual events like this, no matter how big they might seem to be participants do not change to the overall course of history. While most of the Stewarts were somewhat poor rulers, James oversaw something of a Renaissance figure and did do much for the arts and science in Scotland, and improve its political position throughout Europe, however his son was cut from a different cloth and was a tyrant who terrorised the populace. It is possible that had his father lived longer and James V had an easier life as a child he could have been a different man, but I suspect not.

Ever heard of a book by AJ Stewart called Falcoln? The author believes she used to be James IV in a past life, and wrote a massive "autobiography" from that perspective, but was only able to find a willing publisher if she cut her manuscript down to a quarter of its length and let them market it as a novel.

One time I helped my gf steal clothes from a boutique. I knew about two theft crimes and lied about it. That's about it.
I guess all combined my punishment would be $500 in fines.

Although it was an unfair allegation and none of us were ever charged, there was an investigation for illegal abduction brought against me and some co-workers of mine several years back, that could have resulted in a twelve year sentence if we had been convicted. It was stupid nonsense, though, that lacked basis in it being a matter for the criminal courts and it defamed us all very unfairly, but the result has been that none of us have ever gone back to the country where the alleged event occurred. Make no mistake, there are political radicals out there who truly hate Americans.

Beyond that, in my domestic life I've lived fairly lawfully and don't think I'd be subject to much gavel-pounding.

What is a feeling, & what makes it different from a thought?

Just to start on that difficult topic: feelings are emotions, thoughts are neutral. Feelings involve motivations to do or avoid something, thoughts don't. Being afraid of a tiger is a feeling, understanding why a tiger can kill you is a thought.

I think neurologists would explain that they arise in different parts of the brain. Purely from a layman's perspective, feelings come from the limbic system, a primitive part of the brain we share with lower animals. Thoughts originate in the cerebral cortex.

You have several options here (and assuming you are not talking about a nuclear power plant either operating normally or having a meltdown). The US resumes testing nuclear weapons on its own soil, a terrorist dirty bomb or a nuclear attack (which would most likely be arial detonation and not technically on US soil, but since it would be over it, it'd have the same result.

I'd rate the first one and the last one is highly unlikely before the end of the decade. The other one, well I'd rate that as the most likely (just still unlikely). I have no special knowledge on this though, that's just my pure guesswork. I did watch a TV program a few years back (I think around 2005ish), where some expert rated a dirty bomb attack as being almost certain on US soil. I can't remember what (if any) time frame he put on that.

How would we know if an alien species was sentient? Thinking? Self-Aware?

If the species demonstrated mathematical knowledge or musical skills, that would cinch it. Otherwise we might evaluate its architectural achievements. Barring the presence of obvious achievements that would reveal sentience, then by the species' actions, in the case of primitive or basic life forms. Even reactants which move in response to stimulus show some degree of nervous function that would presumably show us what we were dealing with. Despite differences I suspect all life shares recognizable features in reaction to outer stimuli, if nottelse.

Got to have beans!
Lately I been mixing red beans and black beans. So good. I add sliced jalapenos (not too much), and always fresh onion. And stew meat in a crock pot.

Indy- your a Texan- famous for chili. What's your chili recipe?

3 pounds coarse ground beef
4 tablespoons seasoned salt
4 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 large can of tomato sauce
1 large can of Ro-Tel diced tomatoes and green chiles (I prefer "Original," but you can go with "Mild" or "Hot")
2 cans of Trappey's Dark Red Kidney Beans with chili gravy.

Serve with tortilla chips.

I don't know your brand names, but the recipe sounds great.

What is the minimum length for a novel?

No firm answer but the figure I see quoted on Google is an absolute minimum of 40,000 words, and they say very few publishers will be interested in something that short.

The non-flction piece I'm working on is currently 214,000 words and about 75% complete (!)

Question for Alex again: do you add water to your Scotch and if so, how do you go about it?

Title: Re: ASK ME ANYTHING
Post by: Alex on April 22, 2021, 11:03:07 AM
This is kind of tough to explain without going into a moderately deep scientific explanation on how tastes work.

The short answer is that adding a small amount of water helps release the full taste of the drink. Do not listen to people who tell you that adding water to it is heresy. That is people who know nothing about drinking whiskies. This is only something I'll do if I am buying a quality whisky. If its something like Bells, Walkers or Jack Daniels then I'll stick some coke or whatever in it and drink it no problem. If it's a more expensive brand (especially if it is a single malt rather than a blended one), then I'll stick a dash of water into it. If you watch the video on the link below, I tend to put a little bit more water in (not a huge amount), than the expert adds to his. If its a cheap whiskey, then I am drinking because I want to get a buzz on and don't care about the taste too much, so ice will go in as well.

In UK prices, if a bottle has cost me more than about £25, the more likely I am to add a small dash of water. Depending on how taxes on it are in the states, you'd be looking at something around $32 I guess to hit that threshold.

Long answer.

Oh yeah, I've been adding water (never ice!) to Scotch. I notice an improvement. I add ice (never water!) to (low-proof) bourbon only. (That's kind of counter-intuitive but that's the way I like it).

What I've been doing is just dipping my fingers in water and then letting a few drops fall into the glass. I was wondering how much water to use. That guy in the video is adding more water than I have been, I think I may start adding more.

Like he says, it very much comes down to personal taste. If you like it with just a few drops of water then go with that, although I'd suggest trying a dash just to see if you like it more or less. I'd imagine there is a perfect mix that releases the full flavour and then if you add more water you oversaturate and dilute it. Trick would be finding that perfect amount to add.

Well, you could probably write a book on that subject. My broad answer is "evil" is an adjective describing behavior that is judged to be the most strongly objectionable violations of a moral code.

Evil is the shadow to good's light. It is defined by its opposition to that which stands as right.

Dead Kennedys. I've always thought The Ramones were a bit too much of a pop-lite version of punk and that if they were around today they'd be hipsters. Not saying I dislike them though. They had some good songs (and I like them more the Kennedys, to be honest).

I don't think one was more punk then the other. The DK's were very political. the Ramones were bubblegum speed rock.
I love them both in different ways. But I would vote the Ramones. They never got any songs played on the radio.

Growing up on the west coast of Scotland I found their repeated summer marches a pain in the arse. I am so glad they are only allowed a single march now (although I'd be even happier if that was removed). It celebrates a protestant victory, but the truth is there were more catholics fighting on the protestant side, than there were on the catholic side.

Those giant drums they bang while they march are honestly a little cool, as is some of their symbolism, but that doesn't make up for those absurd little derby hats they put on while they're out singing about the Boyne and Oliver Cromwell and how Prods breed and Catholics bleed. Really, hate groups should make an effort to dress better than Orangemen do. Think how impressive Nazis looked. They set the hate-attire bar high. Would it kill Ulstermen to at least wear jackboots?

Is there a question you've always wanted to ask your someone but never have?

Like I've always wondered why my mom has so much artistic talent but has done virtually nothing with it. She took some ceramics classes at a college when I was younger and she worked at an art glass gallery that marketed Chihuly's works, and is amazing good at origami, but hasn't done much on her own despite being talented that way.

It seems it'd be a simple thing to ask but I've always held back like the topic was taboo. Like maybe the explanation would open some secret door to a dark place.

Perhaps I should finally satisfy my curiosity and ask her. Maybe for her 62nd birthday Sunday I should buy her a gift card to an arts supply store and say hey, have fun. Make something.

Know what I mean, though? You can go through life wondering something and never get around to asking.

Yes it is. I drew for the local paper, but never cared about being famous. I don't like to be around a lot of people- when I was young I lived in bars...but I wasn't really socializing, I was getting drunk.
I went to NYC, showed my work to Mattie Simmons at Heavy Metal (aka National Lampoon) and she said " I'll call you back." She was in a meeting, but when the man at the desk asked me why I  said
I was there it was to show Mattie my work. But when that guy was sifting trough my work, he said "Wait a minute." So I had a sitdown with Mattie.  But I left NYC like 2 days later. I f**ked that up bigtime.

Usually, the US Copyright Office doesn’t consider a website published unless you specifically say folks can download/save content.

Does that mean shows exclusively on streaming services are never, legally, published?

(I’m not a lawyer; this is not legal advise; get a lawyer for legal advise, etc.)

Do you have a source for " the US Copyright Office doesn’t consider a website published unless you specifically say folks can download/save content"? That doesn't sound right at all. Generally copyright exists the moment a work of original authorship is fixed in a tangible medium (including when readable by a computer). At any rate, I'd argue "streaming" is downloading.

Additionally, the word "published" might be being used in a different sense that has nothing to do with copyright per se (i.e. it might have to do with registering copyrights, which is optional).

(I am a lawyer but this is not legal advice).

Here: https://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ66.pdf (https://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ66.pdf)

“ Publication
The fact that a work has been placed online or posted on a website does not necessarily mean that the work has been published. The Office considers a work published when copies of it are distrib- uted to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership if the copyright owner authorizes the end user to retain copies of the work. Merely displaying or performing a work online generally does not constitute publication. However, a work is considered published when the copyright owner offers to distribute copies of the work to a group of people for the purpose of further distributing the copies or publicly performing or displaying the work.
The key element of publication for an online work is that the copyright owner must authorize distribution. Just because an end user can technically reproduce a work does not necessarily mean that the work has been published. A copyright owner must have expressly or implicitly authorized users to make retainable copies of a work by downloading, printing, or other means for the work to be considered published.”

I missed the word “implicitly,” so you don’t need to specifically say “download this” for an online work to be published. Still leaves me wondering, since end users can’t keep copies of streamed shows.

Not sure how much it matters; the works are copyrighted if they’re published or not, & they can’t fall out of copyright due to some publishing error. Might’ve been a more significant question 50-60 years ago.

What's something you haven't done that you want to do?
That could have a thread!

What is the worst thing you've ever done to another human being?

Mine is treating them exactly the same way they treated me.

Something I didn't do, so much as I let someone else do and did nothing to stop it.

If you knew you were the last human being alive, would this make you more or less likely to change your present feelings about God?

Probably less likely.  After all, I'd need SOMEONE to talk to.

I was thinking if you were the last human, then the species was in its final "days" and there'd been no return of Jesus, no resurrection of the righteous dead by Allah, no coming of the Messiah as promised by the Jews, so this would rule out at least the God of western religions, so, to quote the late, great Douglas Adams, "That about wraps it up for God."

As it is there remain lots of humans. 8,000,000,000 supposedly, so no disproving the claim that the messiah is still on the way.

Assuming you wouldn't be arrested for it, would you walk naked on Thanksgiving morning down the route of the fully-televised Macy's Thanksgiving parade, for one-million dollars? (Actually, I would not.)

When I was younger and in a better shape, I used to pose for art classes, so I am fairly sure I could do this no problem, although I would like to have something on my feet.

You know, let me change my answer. If I had a mask and could be anonymous I'd do it. I wouldn't care about millions seeing me naked, only about being ID'd and having to live it down.

The issue for me wouldn't be the nudity per se, but the weather. I'd love the money but I don't know if I could actually complete 2.5 miles nude if it's 40 degrees out. Hypothermia is a real possibility.

Plus, shrinkage.

Often in the too-brief time I knew her, my grandma used to like to say:

"Who would you be if you weren't who you are?"

I don't think she ever meant it to be the haunting question it's sometimes become.

Choices create us as much as anything, after all. So I'll leave the question hanging if anyone wants to to think about it.

Me, I think I'd have less insomnia were I someone other than who I am.
