I have several uncles who served, none of whom gave their lives, thankfully. Way back in the family tree I have an ancestor who died at Antietam.

Communism is pretty much dead. China has the third largest stock market in the world and its constitution protects the right to private property since 2004.

I think we should use the word "authoritarianism" instead of the outdated 20th century terms "fascism" and "communism," which are more emotional than descriptive in today's world.

Pretty sure most of the world lives under some kind of authoritarian rule; but hasn't this been true throughout all human history? Democracy and freedom are the exception, authoritarianism is the natural order.

I might say that even a democratic government can be authoritarian; the system just provides a safety valve for a peaceful transfer of power when the leaders start making decisions which cause real harm.

Freedom must be defined. What are we free to do? What are we free from? How do we balance those two goals, freedom to do good vs freedom from bad things? And how do we define what is good & bad?

I guess I didn't know Memorial Day was controversial. Jeesh, does that leave any uncontested holidays? Ha...

Mother's Day.  I was going to say Halloween, but that's contested...

And Mother's Day will be even more celebrated now that Roe v. Wade has finally been overturned! [ducks]

My kids, Jed and Eddie, used to be in the Cub Scouts and marched in the Memorial Day parade here in town.
I was so proud of them. Jed's almost 30 now. Eddie's almost 28.

more than half the world was communist at one time. It was easily exportable via the little red book. what was fascism? even today people struggle to define it. All through Africa and latin america though there were Marxist governments. Even in Europe today there are socialist parties, all because the US backed Stalin. Maybe it was the right thing to do but it had bad repercussions
