Title: Do you still watch bad movies?
Post by: claws on June 11, 2022, 11:29:24 PM
Do you still watch bad movies?
what's your viewing preference when watching a bad movie?
Do you (still) collect favorite bad movies?

Hell yeah I still watch bad movies and collect them when and where I can. If you've got a Roku device, B-Movie TV is a godsend and I love that channel unironically

Although I still have them, since I have 2 screens on my PC I tend to stream stuff from Amazon, or watch them on my Roku (watching Jaws: The Revenge right now and if that isn't a bad movie, then I don't know what is). I remember seeing this one in the cinema when it first came out.

No wonder I so rarely pay the full price to go to the cinema anymore (it is a lot more expensive to go in the UK, than in the US, generally ending up about £20 ($25) per person).

Streaming mainly, with the odd DVD. I tend only to go the movie theatre for good movies.

Honestly, I watch them far less often than I used to. Still, nothing beats a good bad movie every now and then! Once or twice a month is fine (not counting MST3K/Rifftrax/The Mads, which I watch once a week).

Physical media is my preference for sure. Then streaming. Movies in theaters are almost never bad enough (although the last bad movie I saw in a theater was CATS, which was actually TOO bad). No live TV anymore.

I watch Tubi a lot, when I watch TV. I have a large vhs collection, but my vhs player took a dump long ago.
Yes- I still enjoy Bad movies. I just watched Ed Wood's the SINISTER URGE again. Why I don't know.

Depends on your definition of "bad" I guess.  My viewing habits are all over the map.

I still love digging up forgotten 60s and 70s horror/action/exploitation flicks, many of which are considered "bad" by mainstream audiences, but I find them entertaining. I have gotten pickier about what I watch, though.

I'm slso completely over the whole "bad on purpose" creature-feature fad (i.e. "Sharknado," etc.)

As far as collecting goes, I still pick up DVDs when I find 'em cheap but even then it's usually old favorites that I know will have re-watch value. Most movies are a "one watch and done" experience for me, so streaming has been the way to go for me for quite some time.

I never liked that genre. ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES and most Troma films were  just camp junk for camps sake.  I don't like most Sci Fy channel junk.

I still like a bad movies but it has to be sincere. If it's something like the Syfy Channel, Wild Eye Releasing, modern Troma, and so on; I tend to avoid it. I tend to take suggestions from places like Red Letter Media, Good Bad Flicks, or various specialty DVD/Blu-ray companies (Shout/Arrow/Severin). I also enjoy Riffrax and the new MST3K.

yes. don't do streaming and gave up watching any tv, but I still buy bad movies blu rays and dvd... it gets harder and harder to strike bad movie gold but I'm still finding stuff

I was just thinking the other day that if I was only allowed to watch 10 movies ever again, I'd pick 5 genuine masterpieces (to me), and 5 'bad' movies.

In 2013 I assisted a client in digitizing nearly 150 of the most notoriously bad movies made in South Africa - heck, anywhere for that matter - films made during the so-called subsidy era in SA cinema in the 1980s, made around the time that films like Space Mutiny were. Knock offs of ET, The Karate Kid and Halloween abounded and these things were made by fraudulent "filmmakers" who discovered a loophole in our film laws and exploited the loopholes. :buggedout:

But yes, for me, the badder the movie, the better.

You had to have a see a few interesting (or horrible) ideas in all those knock-offs.  Care to share a few?

Yes indeed.

Joe Bullet (1974): the SA version of Shaft and an African James Bond. Terrible film for which its' star wasn't paid a cent and was temporarily banned, then promptly disappeared. It disappeared so well that we have a 35mm print of it and it is also on Youtube.

Umfana We Karati [literally The Kid of Karate]: a very lowwwww budget ripoff of the famous 1984 movie where a bullied child tells Mr Miyagi to f*** off and learns his martial arts moves from an arcade video game  :buggedout:

Space Mutiny: I will spare you all any mention of this piece of space poo - filmed in a Johannesburg warehouse and photographed by a mentor of mine  :buggedout: - which also uses stock footage from better sci-fi films.

The Demon: one of SA's first horror films and our version of Halloween. All I can say is "Oy" and "go here": http://www.badmovies.org/forum/index.php/topic,136044.0.html (http://www.badmovies.org/forum/index.php/topic,136044.0.html)

Nukie: the SA version of ET: too terrible for words.  :buggedout:

To get back to the original question, I don't watch as many bad movies as I used to and part of that is because I can't find bad movies the way I used to find them.

It used to be you could go into any store, look at their DVD or if you want to go back further, their VHS selection and there would be quite a few movies pop right out at you.  Most stores around me now have cut their movie selections down to the bare bones.  It's mostly just the new stuff and the few bad movies they do have are all newer bad movies with bland heavily photshopped boxart that does nothing to capture my attention.

You just don't find bad movie in the wild quite like you use to.

on my copies of physical media -- but not as much as I used to

I watch more on streaming services if the title sounds wacky enough to be fun

I try to catch a Friday night film on tv.  If I'm home on Sat I'll try to catch either Svengoolie (the real one, not the troll we had for a while) or Son of Ghoul, the local late show horror host.

My roomate and I have a shelf full of DVDs we call "Dollar DVD Hell".  We go round our town to all the thrift stores and pawn shops, scour the DVD shelves for movies that are:
1. Sucre
2. Least promising based on the description on the back

Then we place those DVDs all backwards on the shelf so we can't see the title. When we cannot figure out what movie to watch on any given night, we pluck one of those at random.

Last night we watched "No Ordinary Hero". Its about a TV show "super hero" who's deaf.  He's like Sesame Street exclusively for Deaf children. The secondary "main character" is Jacob; a deaf kid attending a regular school.  Of course, the kid idolizes "Super Deafy" (not kidding)  I could go on how self serving and patronizing to everyone this movie is..but it's best to find out for yourselves.

I am disappointed... that I'll likely be up 'til 5am as TCM is showing REPO MAN (1984) starting at 3am.

REPO MAN is the perfect example of a great movie that is also Bad.  Great soundtrack!  Bad influence!  Twisted bad taste and silly.

I watched ANGEL'S REVENGE (1979) with it's only redeeming feature being Alan Hale Jr. and Jim Bakus (both from GILLIGAN'S ISLAND).
It was directed by Greydon Clark, a protege of Al Adamson, so...there ya go.

Having just finished WEREWOLF MASSACRE AT HELL'S GATE, I must sadly say yes.
So bad . . . makes the Polonia Brothers movies look like Oscar material!!

I can't see any point to watching a "bad" movie, and I don't think most of you are into truly bad movies. From what I've gleaned in fifteen years here is that what most of you define as a bad movie actually has certain enjoyable elements that make the film good. You look past acting, plot, production, effects, and you find other things to like. Maybe a better word than "bad" is "silly." In my mind a bad movie is one that isn't enjoyable to watch, and I've seen plenty of movies ripped on here, so it's not bad movies you like, it's ludicrously silly ones of the "laughing at, not with" variety. Or has my decade and a half of going native among you led me nowhere?

Well, you're not far off the mark, really.  There's "So Bad They're Funny" movies, like SHARKNADO.
There are unintentionally bad movies, with A-list actors and famous directors, that are just awful, like GANGS OF NEW YORK.  A half hour story stretched into a three-hour movie!
There are "OMG I cannot believe someone got this released," which don't have a lot of entertainment value except to heap ridicule and scorn upon.
And then there are the "I want to pour bleach in my eyeballs!" bad movies, which have ZERO redeeming value, but we talk about them secretly hoping someone else will watch them and share our misery.

... In my mind a bad movie is one that isn't enjoyable to watch...

In my mind there is no consensus on what constitutes a bad movie or why anyone might enjoy such.  I find "bad" in many different films that may or may not increase my enjoyment of a film.  A film can be well made and "bad".  Conversely a badly made film can be good.  A film can be BAD for you.  Bad sometimes means enjoyment (like VELVET VAMPIRE) or just bad (MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE).   Nonetheless, a "just bad" movie comes to mind and I am eager to see this long boring un-scary cheapo drek again: "IT'S ALIVE!" (1969).

Or has my decade and a half of going native among you led me nowhere?

You trying to dissect bad movies is like describing a food you never tasted, or doing a book report on something you never read.
