Title: Movies I recently turned off within 15 minutes
Post by: Ted C on October 05, 2022, 12:43:31 PM
A couple of movies I tried watching fairly recently and just couldn't.

The Mummy (2017) -- I just got bored and looked for something that could actually hold my attention.

Aladdin (2019) -- Maybe some cultural issues were fixed, but the performances were so uninspired that it paled in every way compared to the 1992 animated version.

Happened to me recently with PROJECT ALMANAC. It felt like I was watching a very crappy music video for teenagers, I simply couldn't stand it. Not surprisingly, it was actually produced by MTV.

Mission stardust.

Perry rhodan fans decided to act like this movie did not exist. Within 15 minutes of the beginning credits I decided to join them.

I recently turned off two movies within 15 minutes. The first was "The Happening". It was a disaster from the start. The acting was terrible, the plot made no sense, and the special effects were laughable. I can't even remember what it was about. The second movie was "The Last Airbender". Again, the acting was terrible and the plot made no sense. But what really bothered me was that it was clearly not aimed at children, even though it was based on a cartoon show that is very popular with kids. Both of these movies were big disappointments, and I'm not sure why I even bother to watch them.

Funny, I can't remember ever actually selecting and putting on a movie and not finishing it. I finish them no matter how bad they are; I will not let the movie defeat me! On the other hand, if I catch a little of something on live TV, I almost never watch more than 5 or 10 minutes. If it looks good, I may make a mental note to look it up later.

I found the green slime an enjoyably bad movie.

I also almost always sit all the way through any piece of crap movie I start.... no matter how bad.  But, I might have made it half way through Eraserhead before I couldn't take it any more.

SuperBad  I think I made it a half hour in before turning it off.

Sausage Party was another I couldn't finish.  I just really don't like movies with Seth Rogan in a main role. As a minor side character he's ok.  But not in larger dosses.

Killer Fish (interesting setting, though - a nice tourist spot in Brazil)

Orca

Last night I started watching a found footage one called "The Changing of Ben Moore". The premise was interesting and the two leads were good but the girlfriend and the exorcist characters were played by terrible actors. I'm watching tubi my standards aren't high, but I'm not gonna watch a read through.

Also re the payphone: this was a NEW movie. obviously old movies have payphones when they were around

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Very lazy scriptwriting and not funny enough.

One I remembered recently: TED. I recall we were watching it with my brother, since we heard so many great things about it, and half an hour later we were bored out of our minds. One of the rare occasions in which I turned off a movie halfway through.

And the worst part is that I kinda like FAMILY GUY, but this was atrocious.

Ok so I started to watch this movie BRICK (2005) and had to turn it off because I honestly never managed to understand a word. It felt like watching a movie from another planet. It's some kid trying to solve a murder, but they talk insanely fast and all in some weird ass lingo.
The subtitles went so fast that I barely had time to read them, and since most of the times they talked a million words per second, I found myself trying to read a movie, rather than watching it.

I don't even know if the plot was good, I never understood a word.

I tried again to watch a tubi "urban" original called the Assistant. It was so stupid I'll try again though

PERFORMANCE (1970) starring JAMES FOX and MICK JAGGER ... Busy editing = pitchfork to the ass.  To be fair it came on TCM at like 4 am, and I did intend to look at only the beginning and I did... but hell I stayed up 'til 6 am watching crap like THE VELVET VAMPIRE !!!

The Children of Dune mini-series, which can be considered as a series of three movies, as each episode is around 1.5 hours long.

It got 7 out of 10 but for some reason it dragged, although I lasted an hour for the first episode. I saw nothing wrong with acting, dialogue, production design, etc., so I can only guess there are issues with the story itself. I did not read the source materials, but my understanding is that they tried to be faithful to it. That said, I would have suggested that they retell the story in chunks, but that's exactly what a mini-series does. With that, I don't know what else to consider.

ABOUT MY FATHER (2023)

Holy crap this was painful. I couldn't even last the 15 minutes the thread asked for. The joke is De Niro speaking in italian, get it?!

Stay away from this awful disaster and just go watch MEET THE PARENTS, it's the same thing but actually funny.

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM

don't think I lasted 15 mins of this the other day. horrible overacting and not just from RW. you kind of expect it from him. just the entire thing grated on me instantly, tone-wise

horrible overacting and not just from RW.

It's your word against theirs

AMC named Good Morning, Vietnam one of the 20 greatest war movies of all time.

American Comedy Awards, Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture (Leading Role) Robin Williams (Won) Good Morning, Vietnam
Golden Globe Awards, Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Robin Williams (Won) Good Morning, Vietnam
Academy Awards, Best Actor Robin Williams (Nominated) Good Morning, Vietnam
British Academy Film Awards, Best Actor in a Leading Role Robin Williams (Nominated) Good Morning, Vietnam
Sant Jordi Awards, Best Foreign Actor Robin Williams (Nominated) Good Morning, Vietnam

I've only seen Good Morning, Vietnam once back in rental days. I probably should watch it again to form an opinion.

no doubt it won awards but I also can’t think of too many Oscar winning movies in my collection tbh… just wasn’t for me, ho hum

I'll let the Awards defend RW but I think both Forest Whitaker and Bruno Kirby are pretty great in GMV, and Whitaker is great by being understated, not overacting.

Yeah I feel like Whittaker really overstated how understated he was acting , kind of like ”hey everyone look at me, look how understated I’m being!”

J/K

I just think my tolerance levels for anything I don’t immediately warm to are getting less as I get older, and weren’t too high to begin with

I can relate to that.

Forest Whitaker's acting is like sushi. I love it, often can't get enough of it, but I know a lot of people just can't stomach it.

Back in '95, I insisted to anyone who'd listen that Whitaker deserved an Oscar nomination for SPECIES.  :bouncegiggle:

that's interesting because I unironically think SPECIES is one of the greatest sci fi horrors of all time, and have been laughed at for saying so! ... who knows?

Turned off THE ITALIAN JOB (2003) couple of nights ago after probably 10 minutes. not sure why I even thought it might appeal to me? immediately realised my mistake

SPECIES is pretty good indeed!

I too found THE ITALIAN JOB totally pointless and uninteresting. See, common ground!

the AMITYVILLE CURSE (2023)

I couldn't stand this. Granted, I only like the first one, which I saw in the theater, and the POSSESION just because it was so outrageous, and think the whole series is for the most-s**t. Why I turned this on, no clue.

Title: Re: Movies I recently turned off within 15 minutes
Post by: zombie no.one on November 09, 2023, 02:48:06 AM
apparently no one owns the rights to the 'Amityville' name, so literally anyone can make a sequel... which is why there are so many...

HIGHLANDER 3

didn’t even know there was a threequel. Fails to capture the amazing crapness of the 2nd one. Eject. I have way too much time on my hands to be wasting it on stuff like this
