Title: Tarantino Says This Is An Era of Horrible Cinema
Post by: ER on November 17, 2022, 08:28:22 AM
Anyone been catching his comments on how terrible he thinks contemporary films are? I'd say TV has been better in the last generation but I know popular music is terrible today, that books often seem less interesting than those written before 2000, and I know when I take the time to watch a movie anymore, which is less often than it used to be, it's rarely a film made in the last decade, so maybe we're in an era of low quality in general, but do you think he's right about movies nowadays being bad?

Not a huge fan of Tarantino's work myself. I've felt some was good, some bad and some mediocre, but never great (hey, if he works for other people though, that's fine). I've watched his films and even when I enjoy them, I rarely rewatch them.

I guess it depends what you are looking to watch. Horror films seem to have been going through something of a purple patch for quite a while now. Superhero films have just became too formulaic. I think we are seeing the death of cinema as it is replaced with streaming. Still, at the cinema club the movies we get the most attendees for are kids films which gives me hope that their is still a future for it.

Tarantino takes his cues (aka rips off) classic grindhouse, western, martial arts, exploitation and slasher genres. so I'm not surprised he doesn't like new movies. and I'd probably have to agree with him even though aside from PULP FICTION I don't think he's made any truly great movies either.

but at least he has a distinctive style. so many new movies just seem to be the same movie. even movies in different genres seem to be coming from the same place these days

I think historical films have been getting better lately. 1917, DARKEST HOUR, LINCOLN - those were all magnificent!

I agree with him. It goes back to my theory of low interest rates = ing lower quality filims

Haven't read his actual statement and his reasoning, but I assume he's talking about the dominance of Marvel and the like at the top of the cinema food chain. I think there are plenty of high-quality films being made for adults today, but they don't receive the kinds of budgets or theatrical distribution they did in various golden ages (70s, 90s). The landscape has changed, so that good films really have become more of a niche audience thing. But there's more than enough good stuff out there currently.

I think Alex nailed it. The era of movies is coming to an end, at least to me. How many truly known actors can you name nowadays, apart from the same bunch that came from the 90's? All the classic from Hollywood are retired, dead, or with health problems. Even those movies that went as "the best thing ever" are rarely discussed today, like JOKER and PARASITE. Only the memes remain.

Nowadays it's all about streamed series from the big companies like Netflix and Disney. And even those actors are ridiculously famous for a while, only to be forgotten until the next popular crap.

In a way I think it's a good thing because it adds a little bit more to choose from. But sadly, quantity does not equal quality. There's a reason why all those movies that only came in VHS are known only by niche groups like ours.

Tarantino already said that one year ago, interesting his statement is surfacing again. He also said the worst decades for movies were the 1950s and 1980s. He didn't criticize the films of the 1980s, but the fact that big studios took over and pushed out indie studios and filmmakers in the 1980s.

Tarantino also prefers VHS to blu-ray so his statements should be takien with a grain of salt I guess.

I mean, Tarantino isn't wrong on this one. Stopped clocks and all that.
