They had a brutally effective drill that was based on knowing he Highlanders would raise their right arms to swing their swords, leaving them venerable there, so instead of every British soldier bayonetting forward, then struck left, into the man in front of their immediate comrade, coming in under the uplifted arm. It was how many Highlanders died there.
