Title: The Dark Thoughts Thread
Post by: ER on April 30, 2023, 03:43:46 PM
I think we needed one of these.

I was thinking today, a few weeks ago it was kicked around somewhere in here how the brain stays conscious after "death" and someone said people have even been able to hear what others are saying about them.

Well, imagine if that's true and how that'd make hanging suck even more. You're dangling there bodily dead but thinking man I effed up. Or maybe worse, you're executed by hanging and there you swing while a crowd stares and jailors gloat and some photographer takes your picture, and all you can do is rotate there passively.

Note to self: hanging is off the table.

With hanging, I believe your spinal cord would be severed, so you wouldn't even feel the rest of your body while you hung there I guess?

I remember some years ago reading an article that decided (to the author's satisfaction anyway), that the only way to humanely and painlessly execute someone was to chain them to a cliff and then take them out with a missile strike. I do agree it would be a fast way to die, but pretty stressful leading up to that point.

By a vaguely connected coincidence, I did hear a line in a tv show that made me chuckle where a psychic (who could foresee how someone would die) turned around to one of the main characters and said something along the lines of "There are worse ways to go, but I can't think of one less dignified than auto-erotic asphyxiation."

I had a horrible dream about a month ago: I was coming down some stairs in the dark, switched the light on and someone I knew was hanging by his neck, still alive, still talking and refusing all help, especially from me.  :buggedout:

And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust, I guess, forgotten and absorbed to the Earth below…

It just seems to me no matter how hard I work, no matter how much I hustle my books, no matter how many river tours I book, we never get ahead financially.  I lie awake at night and think that I am going to die poor, unable to pay for basic necessities once I'm no longer able to push myself 6-7 days a week.

Those are dark thoughts indeed, Indy, but in ways that matter most, like the love and regard of others, you are one of the richest people out there. If ever you did reach such a dire scenario, people who know you from school, church, online, offline, every aspect of your life would step up and look out for you the way you've looked out for the countless souls you've inspired for decades by being who you are. I believe that. The rush to your door would make the crowd coming to George Bailey's aid look like chicken feed.

I agree with ER that you are a rich man, Indy.  You love the love of your life and have a family together.  Your words regarding money worries are not unique, or even unusual.  Money is the only thing God did not create.  You are blessed.

After watching my mother's decline I have a strong and somewhat reasonable fear of acquiring dementia myself. I don't have a family to take care of me in my dotage like she does. So I often wonder if it wouldn't be better for me if I die relatively young.

Rev- my whole family was crazy, and most are dead.
And look at my old ass! I'm great!

There's an old Irish toast, Rev: "May you never die before the day of your death."

In other words it is possible to die and still be living, and no one wants that. That's kind of my philosophy; live for as long as your life lasts, and no longer.

Good luck.

Indeed!  There's a quote attributed to the famous courtesan Lola Montez:  "I want to live until I die!"

That's my creed these days.  I want to be in full possession of my faculties and my body until I take my last breath.

Yeah, that would certainly place a damper on my will to live.

i'm very concerned that my baby sister isn't doing as well as i thought when it comes to the PTSD related to the car wreck she was in last summer(NOT  her fault, she was hit head on by .. i don't think i can say it here). i suppose i should be grateful that the nightmares have stopped, if she's telling the truth. but the fear she deals with just to get in a car and go to PT is scary...i worry that she can't get past this. :bluesad:

Actually, Hitler was democratically elected to parliament...

It was Paul von Hindenburg who appointed him to chancellor, wherein The Nazis gave "emergency powers" to Hitler following the Reichstag fire...

On his deathbed, Hindenburg gave the word that made Hitler president of Germany....

Hitler was democratically elected.

He finished second to Hindenburg - twice!
But he commanded enough votes in the Reichstag to demand he be made chancellor.

Last night where I was staying I either vividly dreamed the sheet was being slowly pulled down off me, or it really was being pulled off me, but when I sat up, freaked out, it fell downward anyway, so I couldn't tell if it actually had been. But after that I could not get back to sleep. Place like I was had probably had OD deaths in it and all kinds of creepy stuff.

I just applied to join a group and was asked if I was a robot. I replied, "Well, I might be one but programmed not to know that I was one so I can't really answer this one honestly."

They've let me in any way, so I guess my momentary existential crisis wasn't a problem for them.

Alice Cooper has suggested that Johnny Depp and Amber Heard remake The War of the Roses with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie playing their lawyers.

I suspect the movie would actually be a minor hit based on the amount of interest during the court case between them.

I haven't been able to figure it out but there has to be some occult reason stores keep bottles of French and Russian salad dressing on the shelves, since clearly no one ever buys them.

We are the architects of our own destruction, taking steps along a path that has an inevitable end just because it is easier to walk it than be inconvenienced on a different route.

Despite it being filled with every form of hi-tech camera, including infrared, being rigged with sound, smell, and motion detectors, despite it being guarded 24 hours a day, not one ghost has been detected in the Tower of London. Hey, if casting bubble-bursting doubt on what is supposedly the most haunted site on the planet isn't a dark thought, I don't know what is.

A fool will cling onto his beliefs long past the point where they have been disproven, desperately hanging on to any shred of evidence, no matter how flimsy much like someone drowning hanging onto anything to stay afloat rather than just face the truth that he is just a fool.

Spiders like to climb into closed umbrellas, and it's not impossible that when you open the umbrella above your head and the spider drops on you, you'll mistake it for an errant raindrop as it crawls toward your collar.

Somehow finding out the people on the Titan likely died faster than the eye could blink in an underwater implosion gifts me with peace I didn't have thinking of them trapped in cold darkness slowly suffocating with their bodily wastes sliding around below them, and no access to YouTube to take them through their final hours.

I've sometimes thought Iceland might be a nice place to live (so much so I recently mentioned it as a relocation site, darn now everyone knows...), but I been watching YouTube videos made by an American lady who has lived there for about a decade, and I don't know that I'd like it that much.

PRO:
The ground is made of cooled lava.
Houses are made of concrete.
It's never hot.
Safe society.
Sell a thousand copies of a book and you're a best-selling author.

CON:
The ground is made of cooled lava.
The grass is only green six weeks a year.
There are virtually no trees and no forests.
Hurricane-force winds are common.
85%-plus humidity year-round.
Virtually everyone lives in apartments instead of houses and almost no one has a yard.
Every appliance is half the size of those in the US, so often twice the work.
Indoor carpet is illegal due to green laws.
Bathing suits are not allowed in public pools, public pools are everywhere, and they have shower police to watch you stand naked in a pre-pool shower and wash certain body parts listed on a chart.
Bjork is considered sane and normal.

^ Reminds me of about a decade ago I saw a wing-walker die at an air show at Wright-Pat, and for the next year her website continued to advertise events where she was going to be, to sell merch, to offer her time for radio and TV appearances. It felt so macabre.
