Title: 2023 Ice Cream Thread
Post by: Rev. Powell on July 02, 2023, 09:42:51 AM
I can't find the old ice cream thread, starting a new one.

I am overstocked on ice cream right now. My grocery store keeps having sales I can't resist. I have Reese's PB Cup (almost empty) and unopened packages of Banana Split flavored, Ben & Jerry's Thin Mint, Haagen Dazs Cookie dough, and Haagen Dazs Salted Caramel. Should last me until the fall, though I bet I end up buying more.

We sorted through our chest freezer recently. Kristi has been banned from buying ice creams, mixed vegetables or sweetcorn until we have used up 75% of our supplies in there.

We bought a new ice cream maker a few years back.  Game changer.

I make sorbets with fruit juice from our garden.  Also some nice ice creams: a friend made an awesome one flavoured with porter recently.

I might pick up some coffee ice cream later today. This one (Klimon) is dairy free and is actually good.

I've made sure to stock my garage freezer with ice cream treats-- sandwiches, bars, and frozen cones-- and let my renter know to have plenty when he gets too hot.  Tubs of ice cream I tend to forget about and it gets freezer burn.  I'm just not much of a dessert guy anymore.  There are some I do especially like:
MALTED MOO SHAKE (malt, extra cream)

TIN ROOF SUNDAE (vanilla/chocolate/marshmallow layers with peanuts)

and BROOKIE (brownie and cookie)

That ranch-flavored abomination last spring left me too permanently traumatized to look at ice cream anymore. :buggedout:

I recently discovered Manner Ice Cream. Manner is an iconic Austrian company specialized in making Neapolitan wafers (chocolate-cream sandwich biscuits). Their ice cream is pretty good

but for some reason they added krokant to the ice cream. I was expecting something like pieces of chocolate covered Manner wafers or something but yeah, still good.

Another yummy discovery was Toblerone ice cream

I went to a local supermarket on Sat to get myself some.  I bought a small pint and when I got home, I noticed there was no plastic ring around the carton top.  I called up the store to tell them about it and the Customer service person told me if I still had the receipt to come in and I could exchange it. A quick google search seemed to point to a lot of brands no longer having the seal to save on plastic.

Fine. I'm all for saving the environment.  But you want to make sure food of all things is safe, non- spolied, and non tampered with.

Anyway, I got to the store and the young woman allowed me to pick out a different carton. Just had to be the same size and brand. But we were all surprised to see that pretty much all the ice cram brands had done away with the plastic seal ring.

Favorite flavors, in case anyone was wondering:  Moose Tracks, Cookies and Cream, and Mint chocolate chip
