Vigo Mortensen has been in my country during several weeks shooting what will be his next film, "Alatriste", and adventure film based on a series of novels by Arturo Perez-Reverte ("Uncovered", "The Ninth Gate").

A trailer has been released, watch it here: http://www.fox.es/cinema/alatriste-11015/11015/
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

Speaking of Viggo, he was just in town promoting A History Of Violence.  He must get around alot.

I saw production photos of 'Alatriste' while it was still being filmed, and I'm extremely interested in seeing it, even though I'm not familiar with the stories.

The novels follow the adventures of Alatriste, former soldier and sword for hire in the XVIth Century Madrid. Although Alatriste is often hired as an assassin, he follows his own code of conduct and this often gets him in trouble with his employers (often nobility) or the authorities. The novels are told from the point of view of Iñigo, a young kid that becomes his servant / apprentice in the first novel, to become a full swordsman of his own in the later titles.

So I guess after "The Lord of the Rings", Viggo Mortensen is typecast...

LH-C

Well at least he gets to show off his Spanish fluency...

Hardly typecast.  This is rennaisance, not medival fantasy.  The Spanish duelsits of that era were legendary for their prowess with a blade.  Their technique was called 'the magic circle' because nobody could beleive they could be that devestating without the use of magic.

The sidekick's last name wouldn't be Montoya, would it?

Neville

I don't think so... but now that you mention it, I think somebody kills his father in the first book...

So not only is Viggo Mortensen basically reprising his role as Aragorn, he is ALSO ripping off Cary Elwes...
