Finally, our long national nightmare is over.
The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak (starring Tawny Kitaen) is out on DVD.  In an unrated director's cut, no less.

My copy's already on its way.

Now, if only Flash Gordon was out on DVD.

Back in 1985, my mom was tricked intro renting it at our now closed local video store by some idiot video clerk who had to have been around 19. We got it home and only watched about 5 minutes of it before turning it off.

You missed the best part, and the only good part, LH-C. Those half-naked Amazon chicks rolling around on the ground together makes for one hot scene, believe me. I saw it years ago on late, late night television.

I've always wondered about the 'director's cut'?  I had the impression that the original idea was to include lots of naked women and then someone got cold feet and changed the lot. Perhaps it was Tawny Kitaen herself. The result is very strange: at one point there is a flimsy excuse to have her take her shirt of, and then she spends five minutes talking to the hero while covering her breasts, I mean, what was the point of having her shirt off in the first place.

Same with the climactic scene. If you want the high point of you movie to be a sex scene of several minutes (and who am I to argue?) why cover it up with an immense cape?

Still, you got to love those chariots drawn by women strapped in leather.

Interesting factoid: according to Amazon, customers who bought Gwendoline also had bought Underworld. Now why would that be?

Flash Gordon is out on DVD.  I own a copy.

I think with the initial shirtless scene, they were establishing that Gwendoline (Tawny) needed to take off her shirt in order to catch rainwater, but that she was still a bit shy about her body.  It wasn't until later that she became comfortable with her sexuality.  Very much integral to the plot nudity, not gratuitous at all.  Really.  Honestly.

DVDempire & Amazon show Flash Gordon (1980) as not being available.  At least here in the USA :-((((

Dr. Whom

Yes, but the point is, if you want to have integral plot nudity, why cover it up?

Because she's shy at first.  I think.  I'll have to wait til the dvd arrives, then watch closely.  many times.  Purely for an academic interest in film making, of course.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

Are there any good looking guys it the movie? Because that's the only way I'll watch a movie of this type.

In the VHS version I've seen, there's a scene in which Willard disguises himself as one of the Amazons. When he gets in a fight, the string on his bikini briefs breaks. Just a split second, but they show it.

I'm interested in knowing if they put back in the rest of that scene where The Queen has Gwendoline sitting in front of that 3 way mirror.
