Roddy McDowell as the totally clueless Horror Film host was/is easily the best component of this movie -- with his mismatched sideburns & holding the stake backwards so seriously . . . ah, what talent . . .
McDowell, amongst his lesser-celebrated credits, was the villian bomber in the first or second episode ever of "Columbo" - Peter Falk corners him with a fake bomb onboard a gondola & McDowell diminishes to a snivelling s**t as he thinks it's real.
Aside from Dr. Cornelius, "Apes", McDowell isn't as celebrated as he could be in these pages.  Give the man credit, he did lots of very BAD, very "B" pictures, and always gave it his all --

Roddy was great as the teacher with a gun in the Punk Rock horror movie "Class of 84"! And he was great as the howling psychic in the Legend of nHell House.

McDowall was quite a good actor, someone should request that Shakma be released on DVD!

For the latest on the fifth installment in Don Coscarelli's Phantasm saga.

And had a small role as the grocery store manager whose family is taken hostage at the beginning of "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry". Yet he's uncredited in the film itself for a cameo, but certainly more than just a walk on. Why? The film and his role aren't bad or "degrading" compared to some of his resume. Laserblast, Rabbit Test, episodes of "Love American Style" and "Supertrain".

He's also in Scavenger Hunt, Circle of Iron, and one of the great stories in the TV movie for "Night Gallery (how that story used to give me the creeps as a kid, and I watched it every chance I could) among lots of other genre stuff.
blah blah stuff blah blah obscure pop culture reference blah blah clever turn of phrase blah blah bad pun blah blah bad link blah blah zzzz.....

And who can forget his role in the classic disaster pic that started a formulaic genre: THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE.

Yes, he truly is a B-Movie legend.

Fright Night was one of the first "adult" monster movies I ever saw -at a rather young age, if I remember properly- and I felt it had some very interesting elements, particularly the geeky sidekick becoming a vampire... I felt it had some interesting elements that could have been expanded on some more (you genuinely felt a hint of his desire for acceptance and power that most movies today would either totally mock, over do, or completely ignore), but nothing really strayed to far from the main focus. The scene were he attacks McDowall only to die horribly has some power in it... even the undead can suffer and die, after all.

That was Stephen Geoffrey as "Evil Ed," whose death enabled Roddy McDowall's character to overcome his fears and confront Chris Sarandon's vampire character.

I hold this and "Lair of the White Worm," made three years later, as two of the best vampire films to come out of the '80's.

I wholeheartedly concur... "White Worm" kicks major ass.

Apologies to rodri, who originally started this column --
Yeah, we do get on to it at times . . . what can you do?  This is the site
AND So:  The Night Gallery episode was/is called "The Sin Eater" -- once upon a time, many people dressed as Sin Eaters for Halloween

I remember seeing IT(1967),with Roddy having his Ma all withered and perserved like Norman Bates's Ma in PSYCHO.Kinda makes me wonder how he woulda done as Norman....

Aiiee!!
I messed up big time --
That's Richard "John-Boy Walton" Thomas in "The Sin Eater"/Night Gallery, NOT Roddy McDowell, though he does remind one of him in it . ..

The episode of Night Gallery with Roddy McDowall was called "The Cemetery".  It was on the pilot movie made for the show.  A very creepy little entry.
